  4. Re:SyncToy and Symantec BackupExec DLO on Backing Up Laptops In a Small Business? · · Score: 1

Except Symantec BackupExec, aka Veritas NetBackup, is a horrible piece of software to use. Attending a course for it, the instructor was unable to recover the NetBackup database after a 'simulated' failure. If your looking at solutions of this kind, I would recommend Tivoli Storage Manager, and use it's subfile differencing to minimize data transfer. Although I actually wouldnt. I would recommend educating the users to use central repositories and DB servers for code/data, and backing that up instead.

  5. TSM if you can afford it on Backing Up Laptops In a Small Business? · · Score: 1

'Small Business' hmm, welll, I have seen very small setups of the following, although they were for big business, so they could probably just absorb some of the cost but I'm not a costs and stuff type person. but still, try looking into the possibility of using Tivoli Storage Manager, with adaptive subfile differencing and 'incremental forever' policy (no full backups other than backup No. 1, TSM will track deleted/moved files, enabling it to 'build' a picture of a f/s at a given date and then recover a f/s to that state) The biggest problem I have seen with laptop backups though, is people turning them off because they slow their machine way down, or alternatley people just not doing them if left to their choice when to backup. If you can get these people to keep valuable data in a central place (cvs/svn repo's, Databases servers for db's) and back that up, it should make you feel warmer and fuzzier..

Im not sure what special about this? replace University with DataCentre and this happens all the time. With SAN's and dark fibre, you can get machine A at datacentre A writing data directly to tapes in an automated library in DataCentre B, and vice versa. and they generally backup a hell of a lot more than email and websites.

  9. Inaccurate afte rmouse use on Mouse or Trackball? · · Score: 1

I tried a trackball once, and what it really showed to me was how much my index finger has 'learned' to be a mouse clicking device, and not something to push/pull a trackball around. If I tried to make any fine movements using my index finger on the trackball, I discovered I was unable, my finger would start to jitter about. My left hand or other fingers were fine, just my right index finger gets the jitters. I put it down to my brain haveing learned and imprinted the clicky behaviour fo rso long it had perhaps lost the fine motor control needed for the trackball?
