You say that you are not being bitter or twisted. But what sort of a boss would you be?

Unfortunately, human beings have weaknesses. I agree with the comment higher up that security is distinct from treating employees like criminals. I try to expect the best from people, but I was let down by an employee I trusted without reservation.

An email I sent to a mailing list bounced from a subscriber in New Zealand with a comment that access to him was refused. He was a bank official. Whether the motivation was security or to protect him, I don't know, but plainly it can be done.

Did you notice that the "sir" is called Vanessa? The best one I ever used was called PADS for DOS. The freware version was less restricted (I think one sheet of schematic and one two-sided board, both about A4 size); but I had problems with printing on newer computers. I had most success with it under DOS no later than 6.2. But I would normally expect to pay something for anything better than the freeware version of Eagle (which I have used.)

It is true that they have been here for a while, but only recently (within the last 12 months or so) they have been spreading more quickly and beyond the limits of Queensland, where the sugar cane is grown. They now have the potential to upset the national ecology, not just locally. That is the new concern. I am in Victoria, and unlikely to see one for a while yet.

I am on medication which means that I can't touch anything with guarina (Red Bull is one.) Herbal remedies are not necessarily harmless (if they were, they wouldn't be worth taking!) A woman was having mysterious admissions to hospital until she mentioned a herbal remedy she was taking 30 mins before, and hadn't thought it relevant. Or like a slashdotter who didn't build his own body? Isn't that all of us? Deep alpha-wave sleep has a function. It is when our bodies repair themselves. If you stay in REM sleep, your brain will be productive, but your body will burn itself out very quickly. It is killing the goose that lays the golden eggs. Meditation is popular, and its alternative name is "psychic sleep". It is like sleeping with one's eyes open. Monitoring of people meditating has shown brain activity very like sleep. Why deprive yourself of normal, natural sleep, only to have to replace it with an equivalent?

  8. I think that it is a business... on Is a Weblog a Business? · · Score: 1

Others have talked about "turning it into a business". I am in Australia, and the detail will be different, but if it is earning you a regular income, it is a "business" as far as the taxman is concerned. Get a good accountant, one that you feel comfortable with, and see that you claim all the deductions available. Incidentally, H. & R. Block operate in Australia as well. I have never used them, but they seem to know their stuff. But you need somebody who will advise you on business strategies as well, not just somebody to file returns for you.

  9. Re:So where's the problem? on RIAA Bullies Witnesses Into Perjury · · Score: 1

As a lawyer, I noticed that the witness is saying that her ORIGINAL story was false, and she was told to stick to it. It is perfectly standard to get the witness's statement as soon as possible. People "remember" details that never happened. In reality, they are unconsciously saying: "It must have happened this way." The decision to send the case to Court was probably made on reading her original statement. I wonder when she changed her story? Probably while the RIAA lawyer was running through her evidence with her on the morning of the hearing. But they should not have told her to commit perjury. I hope that the lawyers get what they deserve. An Aussie lawyer did something similar when he advised a tobacco company to destroy evidence. Doug.

  10. What is theft? on Man Arrested for Using Open Wireless Network · · Score: 1

I can understand the argument. If I borrow something and sell it, I am treating it as my own. That is theft. But if I buy copyrighted software, it belongs to me. If I breach copyright, I am using it as my own, but it IS my own, absolutely, not even conditionally. That is not theft, but a breach of copyright only. It can be made statutory theft by the legislature. Doug (Australian lawyer.)
