Jamie,
Perhaps you should turn on CNN. This whole wide world of peace and love which the internet has already brought about is in the process of melting down. The Palestinians are now in what they consider a state of war, the U.S.S. Cole is in the process of sinking (with at least 4 U.S. soldiers dead and a dozen missing,) Serbia is no more stable than it was this time last week...etc., etc. ad naseum.
While I agree that Bush is full of shit, I am appalled at the one sided nonsense that is portrayed as journalism around here.
No...I take that back. I ceased being surprised more than a year ago.
Have you forgotten so readily the PMRC debacle back in the 80's? Gore is no freedom fighter...certainly not for _our_ freedoms, anyway. So your buddy got grilled by a republican...bfd. _None_ of these bastards care about your freedoms, they care about getting elected.
The last time I saw something of such a ridiculous political bias, Sengan got his ass kicked (for a time, anyway.) Of course, at least you didn't disable comments.
Since at least 5.3, SuSE's default window manager/environment/whatever has been KDE. However, they've included every bloody WM under the sun (that i know of, anyway) in the distro...you don't have to use kde. you don't have to install kde to use X in SuSE.
as for the admin tools looking like windows...i don't know what to tell you there. SuSE only has one admin tool, really...YAST. it's simple, works pretty well, and does what you tell it to do.
no idea where they are at with their 3d acceleration, but it's been my experience that when SuSE says it supports some hardware, it usually works out of the box, or with a minimal amount of fiddling. best thing to do is check their hardware support database for specific hardware.
your memory isn't deceiving you. SuSE had profits in the area of 5 million (if my memory isn't deceiving me,;)) when this was all being discussed last year.
however, i don't think that they were the distributor who'd brought in the most revenue...that was red hat. but they were, ironically enough, still in the red, so to speak.

SuSE 7.0

while not an answer to your question, strictly speaking, don't bother with the '.0' release unless there's something you must have. 7.1, if my guess is correct, should be out in december here in the states (if things go as they usually do...the american version comes out about a month after the euro,) and will (hopefully) fix some of the problems that are bound to be there in 7.0.
plus, with any luck, it'll have the 2.4 kernel in it...
just a quick correction, you only have to use their patches for their customized kernel. (some optimizations mostly for europeans users, if i remember correctly, been awhile since i looked.) you can always install the average, everyday, run of the mill kernel, and it's on the cd's too...
Actually, the U.S. wasn't founded by puritans. Hell, it wasn't even founded as a christian country. No more proof of this is needed than the Treaty with Tripoli of 1792, where it states (paraphrased, don't have the text close at hand) 'in as much as the United States of America is in no way a christian country.'
I don't bring this up to argue with you, rather to illustrate that this country is rife with rewritten history, psychobullshit, and general all around lies...generally to support a 'good' cause (for the children, you know.) I suppose it always has, like most other 'civilized societies.' We do seem to be approaching 'Landslide Stage,' however...now if I could only figure out whether we should try and divert the avalanche, or smooth the way for it in hopes that a few thousand people get mad enough to do something about it, perhaps I could sleep well at night.
metallica suing napster is perhaps the most egregrious hypocracy i've seen come out of the music industry. lars ulrich, no less than three months ago, was still waxing poetic about the 'good old days' when everyone used to trade tapes around.
i can understand if the band got tired of playing whiplash every day for 20 years...i dealt with the bubble gum wrapper that miserable SOB Bob Rock put on their music, i sighed and moved on when Hammet started obsessing about silk shirts and expensive clothes...but bloody hell if this doesn't make me want to take an axe to every metallica album, tape, cd, and video that i own.
I'm starting to wonder where the pods are....
Oh well, they are free to suck at the corporate teat as long as they want. They don't need my money any more anyway.

ah, okay. i remember reading about the scientologist business a couple of months ago now. i just didn't associate the acronym with the scientologists. sounds pretty right on, though.;)
i must say that your system of getting information sounds wonderful. don't let anyone screw it up for you!
heh...well, i thought i had. shows you what happens when you don't get enough sleep after driving a truck all night in freezing weather with the window open. *snore*
if it makes you feel any better, the same feeling of helplessness is rampant in parts of the U.S. as well, particularly among young people. not all of them, mind you, but a pretty large group.
this is off-topic, but what are the Co$ papers? either my memory is acting sieve-like again, or i've missed this somewhere.

i found the upside article slashdot posted last july...you can read it here.

That's not necessarily all bad, ya know...if ZDNet bursts, at least we won't be subjected to anymore of their "news." :)

oops, i suppose i should have included that symlink. thought i did...and now you'll probably never check this article again, but here it is, anyway. :)
/usr/lib/libjpeg.so.6 libjpeg.so.62
ln -s
that took care of my problem. there may be other things that will need symlinked, but i haven't seen them yet.

two thoughts come to mind here...
under what circumstances is any government trustworthy?
if schools analyzed propoganda carefully, they'd have a mighty difficult time teaching any other subjects...with a straight face, anyway.
anyone considering using DirecPC should probably read the following article.
2 .html
http://www.hamradio-online.com/1999/nov/direcpc
which version of SuSE are you using? 6.3 works fine, i just had to set up a symlink.
