My brother-in-law makes video games, and his company (4 years ago) fell on hard times. They had trouble getting people paid, and all of a sudden, their employees started jumping ship! When they lost their developers, they were left with NO ASSETS AT ALL! They were dead before by bro-in-law could even leave town.
People who say, "Our employees are our greatest asset," might just understand the truth of it.
I know, I know, it doesn't always work that way. But without employees, there is no company.
"How anyone can presume a business has your best interests at heart, and freely gives a business the keys to effect your life at a massive scale (i.e. Healthcare) without better regulation is an incredible insult to human intelligence."
Well, what do you suggest? Let the government do it? Do you trust the US gov't with that kind of control over your family?
I am getting less and less happy with my employer all the time. Increased commands, less professional treatment, lowering my benefits, pay not keeping up with increased cost-of-living. That's why my wife and I are thinking of moving. Moving is MUCH easier than emigrating.
I don't want to trade in my responsibility for my family's health for a little dubious security, but don't worry, though, you'll have your socialist government soon enough.
It blows my mind that people believe increased dependence on the government is a good thing.
I thought that was explained by the huge orbit (like 1-3 lightyears). I guess with a big enough orbit, it might be really hard to detect the pull on our Sun.
I see it this way: Rape is a violation of rights and justice. Religions (at least the christianity, the only thing I know) condemns the violation of rights, and commands justice.
Our society also respects rights and seeks justice. While this may have its roots in the Judeo-Christian ethic, it is not dependent on it anymore.
So I guess my point is that while it may have started out as religious, it is not so any longer.
That said, I do believe that one reason we have seen such an increase in crime is because of our general abandoment of the foundation on which our system of justice and right is built.
So I guess I just agreed and disagreed with you about the same thing. Can I do that? Is that allowed?
That's one thing I noticed about Star Trek: The Next Generation. There is an 'atheistic morality' about it that kind of bothers me. I find it somehow hard to believe that such a society could exist. I think that in a society where everyone is enlightened past belief in God would be that moral. But then, I have to admit my bias.
I imagine that you are saying this because it started out as a religious taboo, but I am not sure why you are saying it. So before I start telling you you're wrong, I would like to know what you're thinking
Did I miss something? I don't recall reading the child's age. How do we know it wasn't an infant. The skull in the photo looks pretty small. You wouldn't need a bird bigger than what we have around today, would you?
I teach 3rd grade, and have taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. I have used Accelerated Reader to great advantage as a SUPPLEMENT. The best way I've found is to teach them according to my own program, then use AR as something they can do in their free time. Some of the teachers I work with give out prizes for getting so many points. Since the lower-leveled books are worth like half a point and the higher leveled books are worth like a finity, this encourages the kids to read at their level.
I don't understand why people's TVs need to be subsidized. Shoot, practically everyone I know has a TV. Think about it: we all know poor, uneducated, or elderly people. They all have TVs. The government didn't pay for them, or even directly subsidize them in any way.
If someone's TV stops working properly, they replace it or get it fixed. That's all. So when the switch happens, many TVs will stop working (including mine, because I hate buying new anything except computer stuff). People will go to see about repairing or replacing them. Just like now, except we will see it coming.
There's another sad tale of modern pollution. I looked it up, and hoop snakes are dying out. It seems that, due to pollution, the hoop snakes are no longer breeding like they once were. Apparently the females now roll counter-clockwise and the males still roll clockwise. This makes breeding difficult, as anyone can see.
What about water vapor? How does that fit in to the picture? From what I've heard, water vapor is the #1 greenhouse gas, completely outweighing all other greenhouse gases combined.
You seem to be saying there should not even be laws punishing tresspassing, or fraud (I almost said "preventing" instead of "punishing" there). Do I understand you correctly?
So what happens if someone with a bigger gun than you from tresspasses on your property?
Maybe we're not talking about the same thing. I meant that once people know the facts about sexual intercourse they might be convinced to be more careful in their choice of partners (and other decisions, like monogamy, protection, abstinence). Condoms do indeed make sex way safer.
If your only argument against it is "you might die," then you have to accept a counter-argument that shows how you can do the same thing AND NOT DIE!
I don't know what you mean by "my only argument against it."
Anyway, I hope I have not misunderstood you. It sounded to me like you were advocating the abolition of abstinence education. Or that it was a complete waste of time to tell someone the best way to avoid STDs is to avoid the S. For the record, I do NOT think it is a waste of time to tell someone about condoms.
"If people are going to have lots of sex (which millions of years of evolution suggest they will continue to do), then why not "educate" them to do it safely, not pretend you can stop them from doing it? And in any case, why should anyone stop?"
I have trouble believing you're serious. Do YOU feel compelled to have sex all the time? Many people have trained themselves to defy evolution and choose partners carefully.
I don't believe that you can "stop them from doing it." I believe that, once they know the facts, it is possible for a human being to stop themselves from doing it.
As for why anyone should stop, that is a question with many answers. One of those answers is: "So you don't get AIDS."
In fact, as I think about it, I would guess it's a matter of when, not if, all transportation will be shut down. If not for this disease, then another like it. If not now, then in a few years.
The solution is to have a year's supply of food and water in your house. Start now. Start out by getting 3 days' worth of food and water (don't forget the first aid kit), and go on from there. For a teensy bit of extra money every month, you can have a stockpile of food before you know it.
I think another benefit of following those steps is this: people notice problem-solvers, and want to keep them around.
People who say, "Our employees are our greatest asset," might just understand the truth of it.
I know, I know, it doesn't always work that way. But without employees, there is no company.

Sorry. My last response sounded condescending or something like that. It wasn't meant to be.
you certainly are entitled to comment. And you all have valuable opinions to share.
Oh, man!!! I also used it to begin Lawyer. That's funny, but I didn't mean to.
No one ever ends a rant on education with IANATeacher. Why is that?

I got my Win2K Server box to run AVG free. When was the last time you tried it?
Tired myths have held sway over human thinking since time out of mind.

That's a pretty safe assumption. You don't even have to know who he voted for.
But very often it does end up directly interesting a private company or corporation.
Here's a thought, perhaps private companies/corporations don't fund research enough because the taxpayer is funding it for them.
Disclaimer: I do not oppose publicly-funded research. I am still thinking about it.
So what happens if someone with a bigger gun than you from tresspasses on your property?
