Or you're running Windows. I've set up an internet connection for a family friend where only one computer was connected to the DSL modem but I configured it to use NAT anyway. This wasn't something I particularly liked, but I'm sure he's never experienced any drawbacks from it and no matter what he does with Windows, there's always going to be a little extra layer of protection.
To take this one step further, it would be extremely nice to have the OS and some commonly used files available on the NAND drive and another hard drive available inside the notebook. Most of the time I would be able to run with the hard drive unmounted and powered off, saving a nice amount of power, and when I needed access to those files OS X could spin up the hard drive and mount it with no problem.
Right. We'll never develop true AI until we completely understand the brain on every level, including molecular. As it is now, AI is essentially a misspelling of heuristic algorithms.

I agree. But I have perhaps an even more compelling argument against this:
Why on earth would I, or should I have to install a kernel module just to watch movies? Sounds like a totally unnecessary security [and perhaps stability] risk factor to me.
no no, you don't quite understand how it works. take your average teen. analyze their characteristics. what do you find? a self esteem largely dependent on what they perceive others to think of them, and usually they will be followers. their desire to be 'cool' leads them to almost want to be told what to listen to.
this leads me to my point: kids are going to be looking at songs to buy, think song x sounds pretty good. but wait... it's only $.99, when this other song y that's popular is $1.99. clearly there is a reason it's not priced as high, and this can lead to the assumption that song x is not as desirable as song y,and then their desire to be cool and fit in will kick in. now their view of the song is changed, negatively, purely for psychosocial reasons.
People still complain about quality of regular cell service.
Complain? I'm afraid you haven't tried using a verizon phone around where I live. No matter where I am in the house, I can't go ten minutes without getting disconnected. I usually have to call my girlfriend back 5-10 times during a night's conversation. On top of that, my most frequent phrases are "What?" and "I can't hear you..." I don't want to complain, I want to cut verizon's balls off and smash them with a hammer. Maybe not in that order. Argh. </rant>
Sure, any common OS can help you play mp3's and watch videos on less than modern hardware.
But here, multimedia means something else; content creation. As an amateur producer I can tell you not all OS's are equal when it comes to having latency of 5ms @ 44.1Khz for the output of a sound wave that is being generated in realtime from multiple software synths being passed through arrays of effect units and a mixer or two [or more], and maybe some more effect units.;)
I wish I could mod you insightful.

Because we all know slashdotters don't get laid enough to have kids.
No, you're lucky!

funny thing is, he could do all that, and end up healthier than the rest of us.
B might be a bit generous.
yes, i very much want to know [not kidding].
you do realize that's just a viewer, right?
Hell yes, I couldn't help but notice the parallels to my own sexy PowerBook.
yeah, try telling your boss that!
I applaud your method of parenting, seriously.

Seriously, doesn't the XBox360 use PowerPC chips from IBM?
Oh, I get it. It's microsoft's innovation for using the cpu's.
