I'd recommend the distro Siduction (basically Debian Unstable with a few tweaks - previously Sidux->AptoSid) and use the "smxi" script to run updates, install virtualbox/vmware and graphics drivers. I've been doing this on my desktop for years (through the above mentioned distro iterations), and it's worked great. If you install apt-listbugs, and keep an eye on the forums before big dist-upgrades, you get always current software with very few breakages (I've only had a couple of major ones in those years).

  2. Re:Government Must Fear Pissing Off Its Citizens on Smart Guns To Stop Mass Killings · · Score: 1

The problem is, this isn't a story about stopping the government, you're mouthing off against positions that are widely popular. Restricting assault weapons and the sale of bulk ammunition has more than 50% support in the U.S. You are talking about killing me, and your other neighbors, because you have decided that your minority opinion is more valid than the majority opinion. ....... The conceit of your argument is that the "jackbooted thug" isn't a human being. It's BS.

The conceit of YOUR opinion is that the current minority opinion will never be the majority opinion in the future. I don't believe that the grandparent post is suggesting that the time for a rebellion is NOW... However, if, in the future, the government gradually becomes more and more oppresive, there may come a time when a tipping point is reached. This would be a time when a huge majority opinion would be in favor of potentially giving their own lives for their freedom, and would be opposing the small minority of tyrannical oppressors. I doubt anyone in their right mind would propose trying to overthrow the current US government. It is not time for that, and hopefully that time would never come, but it is not outside the realm of possibility for it to one day arrive, especially without vigilant watchmen.

I wish I had mod points today to mod up all your posts BlueStrat. You are exactly correct in all your statements. People forget that our founding fathers overthrew their oppressive government through use of their militia (common citizenry), and wanted to insure that ability for future generations in the event that the government they forged went awry. I believe in that idea, that it is our responsibility to our own freedom to keep our government in line, if necessary. I'd like to see no gun control on non-criminal US citizens. The one thing I worry about is our guns crossing over our borders to arm drug gangs in other countries (I've seen several very troublesome documentaries on that topic). So, I might accept more stringent regulations when it comes to background checks for certain weapons even when sold by a private individual to help limit this issue. (I'd also legalize all drugs to cut off funds to those same drug gangs, but that's another issue)

The article was not about "computer enthusiasts", it was about "enthusiast PCs", which in fact have a very specific meaning. They are the kinds of PCs that have $600 video cards, packed with RAM, SSDs, water cooling etc, and are upgraded way more often than probably necessary - hence the desire for a socketed motherboard.

Yes, obviously you can be "enthusiastic" about computers and not build one of those, but that's not what this article is remotely about, so why bother trying to change the semantics for some irrelevant point?

No, the article summary was about "enthusiast PCs", the article was about "enthusiasts." Obviously you didn't actually read the article... I've considered myself an enthusiast for over 30 years, and haven't built a high-end PC in over 20 (not counting servers here, as the article was about PC's). I like to engineer my systems to do what they need to do for the least amount of money, which is why they almost never run Windows (or Apple).
