It depends on the device's form factor, but to protect things like phones, PDAs, tablet PCs, etc. from humidity, water and sand you can use a Foodsaver and cryovac it.

  9. DrupalEd on Real Open Source Applications for Education? · · Score: 1

DrupalEd is a new distribution of the Drupal CMS. While I haven't used it in an educational environment, I have at one time or another used all of the contributed modules included in it. Installing DrupalEd -- as opposed to installing the Drupal base and then all of the contributed modules -- saves somewhere between 10-30 hours, depending on the skill of the person installing it.

Drupal can be made to do just about anything you want, so adding more functionality like ERP, PubCookie, LDAP integration, etc. isn't a problem. CiviCRM is, in my opinion, a must-have for most organizations and small- to mid-sized businesses.

A discussion about DrupalEd's release and what it's all about can be found in the Drupal forums and at the DrupalEd working group. More about distributions and install profiles can be found at the Distribution profiles group.

  10. Demo in Cambridge last night on Guitar Hero II Coming to Next-Gen Consoles · · Score: 3, Informative

There was a demo last night of GH2 at the postmortem usergroup's "Harmonix party" (in Central Square, Cambridge) close to where Harmonix is based). I didn't know it was happening until about an hour before I went, or I'd probably taken a camera and a bottle of water (the minibar was selling them for $2 [but the pizza was free!]).

The line was pretty long, even with people going up two at a time (the multiplayer co-op mode was pretty interesting). Unfortunately, there was only one venue to play in the demo. One of the speakers from Harmonix said that they finally got to do with GH2 what they originally wanted to do with GH1. He said "not a lot" has changed in the gameplay, though, although he sounded really happy with the "revolutionary" additions such as pull-offs.

I'd say more, but I don't know how much of what I learned from the developers is public. It didn't sound, though, like they've started development on PS3 hardware yet.

Apparently, postmortem has these meetings once a month. Ask around if you're in the Boston area.

ScanZoom is probably the most "complete" solution and sounds like what you're looking for. It runs on Palm and Symbian camera phones.

You can also scan barcodes with Barcode/13 and look them up yourself. Hold down a button for a while and Barcode/13 "scans" and copies the barcode to the Palm clipboard. Unfortunately, the pictures that my Treo 600 takes are too saturated for it to work. I've heard that it works really well with the 650's camera, though.

It may not even matter. The installer package (for version 0.0.1 build 27 on OS X) doesn't have the license agreement - it's the website with the download link that does.

Meanwhile, is the name zFone or Zfone? It may be trivial, but from a marketing point of view I believe it matters. The application's "zFone" menu doesn't even seem to know (there are two menu items that say "zFone" and two with "Zfone").

I rearranged the keys on my PowerBook G4 in about 10 minutes. I did this when I switched to Dvorak, but I decided to clean my keyboard (top and bottom) at the same time. The keys were remarkably easy to move around, especially compared to those in the keyboards in the original iBooks.

Now I'm looking for a way to change the default keyboard layout in the loginwindow...

As an aside, I referred to the onscreen Keyboard Viewer (found in the Localization status menu) extensively during my transition to Dvorak. I found that this was much more practical than the physical hard copy recommended by DVzine.org.
