It most certainly does not align with the 'culture' of any kind of functional workplace
That's not entirely accurate. It would align with the culture in a tech company who's products are related to digital entertainment or gaming. I have seen consoles in people's offices and in lounge areas. The idea was to create an environment at the work place that would keep the employees comfortable and give them less reasons to leave the office. The same can be said about some of the companies that provide Starbucks coffee machines in their break rooms. Most likely this guys workplace just isn't the right fit for this kind of perk, especially if he wants to hide it from customers.
These are the offices I'm most afraid of. If I find out that the office has on site showers, I run for the hills. I need my life outside of the office and would rather the office not try to be my second home.
See, to me this is a non issue. Again, that's something a server admin would care about. I don't go poking and prodding through the repository directly, ever.
I'm not a fan of SVN. Use it at work, and I find myself missing things CVS does so well, like tagging and branching. Frankly, the features of SVN that are actually better than CVS seem more related to server management than to me, the programmer who needs source control.
I admit, I've never looked at Git at all, I don't know how it compares to CVS or SVN, but I'm not planning on moving my personal projects out of CVS any time soon, sorry.
So, instead of going to a bar to discuss things where I can overhear them, you lay it all out on your facebook profile instead, where I can overread them.
So what? Who cares if your likes or dislikes are posted for all to see?
I LIKE JUNO REACTOR AND SEX
See? Was that so hard? Has my life become worse now that you know this? Facebook isn't going to make your life any less private than when your girlfriend talks to her girlfriends about your impotence. Stop being so paranoid. This isn't a new world of TOTAL INFORMATION AWARENESS.
I don't know what it was, but it also split in two. It was a slow process mind you, took about a week before the split finished.
Then it died in a few months after the split. I think the problem was that I never put the plant into a bigger pot. It split in two and now needed twice as many resources to survive, and that small pot was simply not enough room for its roots.
So imagine my surprise when I read this story and realized that the exact same thing happened to my plant.
Maybe I'm missing something, but this summary really sounds like a bunch of hyperbole. Who cares if the personal data is anonymized? Sure, security through obscurity doesn't work, but it does filter out a lot of noise anyways, and in the end, names aren't whats important in reviewing cases, it's the decision and the reasoning behind the decision that matters.
But the way this summary was written, you'd think the end of democracy is near.
Then you end it with "Is Stoddart a danger or a menace? Or just clueless?"?
Is this honestly how a debate will go these days? It's bad enough that canadian politicians bicker like little children, we don't need the high school like ultimatums or multi-anti-your-opinion-choice questions from the populace to throw into the mix.
Out of curiosity, how does PCMIA slots on laptops fare for firewire components? I'm specifically interested in your point #4 for my laptop. Sound modules mostly are Firewire, so how well would a firewire adapter in my PCMIA slot work vs. a USB sound module?
I haven't found much to suggest anything at all...
Smaller ADSL providers provide ADSL over Bell's network.
Cable internet has a bit more competition. Cogeco, Rogers, Videotron, Shaw, Telus, but, for the most part, they have monopolies over their regions (Want cable TV or Internet in Montreal? You ultimately get served by Videotron no matter who you sign up with).
Cause you know, having your coffee cold by the time you get to work makes it so much more enjoyable to drink.
Just be careful.
Or, for you youngins out there, don't hate the player, hate the game.
Of course users should be held accountable. They are held accountable with car maintenance, they should be held accountable with computer maintenance, since both can your life at risk in very different ways.
If I'm not going to buy a DVD from a store because I can get it for free from the pirate bay, why would I buy a DVD from an obvious criminal?
Honestly, I've never figured out the whole "PIRACY FUNDS CRIME" angle since well, the whole premise of piracy is that I can get digital media for free!

But we have no definition of advanced.
Look, just because an alien civilization has been around longer than we have, doesn't necessarily mean they will be more advanced than we are.
Maybe they could have been around one million years before us, but are stuck somewhere between Mesopotamia and Rome.
they did trademark "Start"

I miss the free POP3 account, and those primitive web based chat rooms that destroyed your browsers with all the refreshing it would do.
