That someone will come and make an even better tool which does run in Linux, thus making wine unnecessary. The goal is that all the good tools are cross-platform, or at least work on linux; in such a scenario wine is required only for legacy software that never will have a linux version, such as old games.
The patent system incentivizes would-be infringers to "invent around." Indeed, it's arguably one of the goals of the patent system. That is, one of the benefits of having patents is that it forces inventors to invent some more.
Sadly in the software world that equals more bloat and slower code. To illustrate this point I have produced the following flawless step-by-step plan:
1. Company X patents a part of their software 2. Company Y is making a competing product and is forced to "innovate" around the patent roadblocks. Company Y then patents said "innovations". 3. Company Z is making a competing product and is forced to "innovate" around the patent roadblocks, and around Company Y's workarounds. Company Z then patents said "innovations". ... 999999999. The year is 2500, web browsers take up 500 PB and have less functionality than Lynx. 1000000000. Profit!
No, but in this case, ~1% (yes, one!) faster means 28% more money. And I think most people will agree that's absurd. The reason for this discrepancy is that there are already cards that are factory-overclocked that cost about 650$ and deliver similar performance to the 8800 ultra.
Do you actually spend time to check that foe list periodically to see if it has new additions? I think you need a healthier hobby, like making hats out of tin foil or posting skeptical comments to stories about the moon landing.
Actually I'm more worried of the non-human population. Humans will deal, whatever the change in the climate is, but if earth gets hotter or colder then the other species will be worse off. If we screwed up the environment then we are responsible for putting it back together. You are right, it isn't even clear that humans are responsible, but what better way to find that out than by removing the CO2 we already have put in the atmosphere? Some people (not you in this case) use the we-don't-know-humans-cause-it card as an excuse not to do anything, but I think it's silly. If our choices are inaction with certain change, and action with uncertain change, then one would think it was obvious which the safer bet is.
Of course we should. The people who say that climate change is the result of human activity are optimists, if there isn't anything we can do to prevent it then a large part of the earth's population will be in for some rough times.
I am of the opinion that the only thing "wrong" with copying unlicensed software is the fact that it's illegal. That is why I consider it an important point that in this case it's still illegal, as not breaking the law is the only valid reason for buying a windows license. Personally I pirate Windows without the intermediate step of paying for it, and feel no qualms about it. Frankly I'd rather avoid it entirely, but such is the curse of vendor lock-in.
Which coincidentally is one of the contributing causes for hangover. Personally I don't drink aspartame-flavored drinks as they taste horrible, but if I did, the possibility of aspartame causing hangover-like effects would make me pause.
My post was mostly a tired snipe at the typical arguments people who claim the Iraq war wasn't for oil have, e.g. "if it was for oil then why are the Chinese getting it", "why would we invade, we can always buy the oil" etc. As you already pointed out, most wars are fought for resources, and will be fought for the same reasons in the future. My post was poorly construed.
P.S. Are other people having problems with the new discussion system? It would seem that I can't see AC posts responding to me if I go to one of my own posts through my user page. I have to switch to the old system to see them, which is a shame.

Wouldn't that also imply that the shareholders should be held legally responsible for the actions of their corporation?
It's funny if you read post #18996131 first.
The advice was meant for those of us who haven't worked at Google. ;)
I can jump 2 homeless people, maybe 3, but there is no way I can jump this many!

I think you are confusing spam and DoS.
They're pregenerated one-time passwords so that would be no.
But then people will think the software is in French.

There is a white hole on the other side which repels matter.
:)
No, I'm not trying to pull a Red Dwarf joke on you, that's actually what it's called.

That's still as illegal as pirating the OS and not having a legally bought copy.
Sparta is alive and well.
Then what motivation would we have to expand to space?
This statement seems to me a bit contradictory.
I'm wondering when they will realize (zap) that they shouldn't be storing CC data at all.
Aero is based on DX9. Any DX9-capable card is able to run it adequately.

Good thing the leaker didn't use the name Steve.
