I remember back in the day... There were two major Atari ST magazines that got progressively thinner and less shiny. One disappeared, and the other (ST Format if I recall) went on for a few more months. I remember the very last issue stated in no uncertain terms that there was no chance of them closing down, and that they'd be going strong for a long time yet. I still wonder whether the staff knew how bad it was or whether they were as surprised as their two readers.

I've read this before somewhere else. Very entertaining, no argument there. However, there are many doubters as to the truthfulness of this story. Many people have pointed out that such an event would have been recorded and talked about within Eve and other Eve-related communities, yet it is not. Also, none of the characters can be proven to exist or have existed in Eve. Some of the technical details are wrong as well.

I'm not saying it's bollocks or anything, but many Eve veterans do say so. Either way, it's a damn good yarn.

  12. Re:Why Bite the Hand that Feeds? on PayPal vs Google(Buy) · · Score: 5, Interesting

I got quite excited about the concept of micropayments a few years back. If I could sell stuff (software, music, videos, etc.) for £0.10 per download I might get rich. Maybe not, but the idea is cool.

Unfortunately, even if Paypal weren't the evil beast people proclaim it to be, it has still stifled the online payment market through its outragous fees for transactions. Payments of less than £1.00 are worthless.

If Google can provide a viable model for micropayments it could take over a different sector of the market by catering to the smaller purchasers.

Of course, I'd be just as happy if Google pounded Paypal into the dirt.

It really gets MY goat that some people make stupid assumptions about others. FYI I live in England where healthcare IS free for everyone.

Of course, free healthcare is provided by the government and therefore by taxpayers, but so is anything "free" like tarmac roads, schools and sanitation.

Free internet access (taxpayer funded or otherwise) IS something to aim for, but NOT at the expense of healthcare or anything else - who suggested it was? Not me, that's for sure.

  14. Re:Question: on Phones And Skype Get Together · · Score: 4, Interesting

Yes, calling landlines will always be chargeable (though with Skype et al it's all local rates). The point I was exploring was that when we ALL have wifi phones there'll be no need to charge at all! One has to wonder whether the phone companies will "allow" that when the technology becomes ubiquitous.

  15. Question: on Phones And Skype Get Together · · Score: 4, Insightful

Eventually, we may all live in wi-fi enabled areas, with constant free internet access. It's already happening in some cities. If wireless IP phones take off, it's reasonable to assume we'll all be able to make free, unlimited phone calls to each other because everyone will have access.

Will this happen, or will someone (e.g. the telcos) force regulation upon it? It seems lately that new technology that frees us up ends up being unreasonably restricted.

No, I think you're being a bit silly there.

The game has relevance - Det. Lobsinger said. 'You have this game that's all about fast cars and racing through city streets. It's actually really ironic,' he said.

Leather seats mean nothing, whereas the least you can say about the game is it's an amusing coincidence, given its theme.

I think you need to be aware that there's a difference between two utterly unrelated facts and two fact that could be related but are not necessarily causally related.

In the game's defence, it could be perfectly plausible that the kids were already into REAL street racing, which caused them to be more likely to play a similar-themed GAME; just as likely, if not more so, than the converse causality.

Indeed. Sometimes, late at night, I worry about legacy code. Are we ever going to receive a brand new OS from Microsoft, or will each release merely be an upgrade from older versions?

I understand the importance of being able to run old programs, but surely Vista could have included a virtual machine or something for XP compatibility - is it really that hard to create a new OS from scratch with proper security etc. as a starting point, not an add-on? Yes it would be a mammoth task, but MS is pretty big, you know.

I don't know - when you have vulnerable code from Windows 3.1 in your latest release, don't you want to just cut the cord and start again?
