Bring back the paddle? I don't think abuse is the answer.
Violence is not abuse. Violence for the sake of violence is abuse.
Just an example: since the demise of the communist regime, teachers may not hit children, under any circumstances. What's happening now, you ask? I've witnessed a 9 year old boy getting up in the middle of class, walking up to the teacher, and kicking her, repeatedly, while the rest of the class either cheers or is horrified (roughly corresponding to skin color, but we all know all racism is unfounded, too). So now, if the teacher stops the kid, she loses her job. In a working system, the kid spits out a tooth suddenly, the class is resumed, and nobody in the class ever tries that again.
Of course, if the teacher just walks up to a random kid in class and hits them, they should lose their job. That's abuse.
Not only can you detect ADHD with EEG, but you can treat it.
Fun fact: Hungary does not recognize the thing you're trying to treat. It simply does not exist here. Although we do have something similar, we call that boredom, and it's not a disease.
And most of the parents would personally beat the shit out of you for even suggesting drugging their children.
I think it's the kind of people who have the authority about these decisions that are different, not the children.
Some other guy posted a link to a video of a professional dice maker saying even a 1/1000th of an inch difference in size between the faces can cause significant bias.
With one dice, yes. But I don't think it matters that much when you shake up a bowl with 1500 of these.
Democracy is a very interesting idea; it would be worth trying..
The human race as a whole is not yet ready for it. Most people don't vote for the one they want, but against the one they hate. This invariably leads to dual systems of two hated parties, where third parties don't stand a chance. The same thing is happening from the US to Romania.
Random number generators can also be built from macroscopic phenomena, such as playing cards, dice, roulette wheels and lottery machines. The presence of unpredictability in these phenomena can be justified by the theory of unstable dynamical systems and chaos theory. These theories suggest that even though macroscopic phenomena are deterministic in theory under Newtonian mechanics, real-world systems evolve in ways that cannot be predicted in practice because one would need to know the micro-details of initial conditions and subsequent manipulation or change.
How fucking hard is it to strip non-numeric characters from a string?
So you're suggesting we write one for loop with one switch statement in it, instead of a complete general-purpose parser library and a syntax that makes programmers a bad name? Now what's the fun in that?
You know, a +1 Whoosh moderation would cut down on an awful lot of misunderstandings (and also misplaced IRONy)
That's actually a feature of language itself. Most people write like they would speak, and they forget that all the other information their voice carries is lost.
So it's okay with you the actual selling of weapons to those kind of 3rd world dictators, provided they have "proudly made in USA" stamped on the side, and not "made in PRC" ?
I don't give a crap either way. I live in Hungary.
That's knee-jerk stupidity, and you should be ashamed of your non-thinking fundamentalism.
I just assume that any event capable of destroying my ability to transmit said passwords to my successor also destroys any ability to give a damn about my job. Problem solved.
C was meant to be equivalent to a high-level assembly language.
No, it was a general-purpose high-level language. It's just that our definition of "high-level" has changed over the past 40 years. Now we have Python and Ruby.
"Most linux distros" have to worry about the versioning and configuration of these packages.
And how does that change the fact that they all fail? Gentoo, for example, moved to autobuilds because the last release doesn't update cleanly (if you force it, you break both init and networking, and you need a livecd to recover).
I thought it was more fun to watch your computer compile your latest ebuild list...a preinstalled environment would remove the l33tness that so many linux users thrive for.
It would also come with all the drivers you need, properly configured X, hardware acceleration, and wifi. Ever had all of those on something you compiled, or did you get bored with it halfway through like I did every time?
You obviously don't have a cat. Mine learned to use door knobs on her own, but does so only if there's food on the other side and nobody's guarding it.
I suppose you could build some sort of multi-feline interferometer, and interpret the varying frequency of their mewing according to their individual proximity to objects.
Assuming my cat is typical, that wouldn't work for anything else than the fridge.

I think this device qualifies.
Please upgrade your packages.
Must be the side effects of Gentoo, but I parse that as "ICEBERG AHEAD!".

nobody could continue their work for the only reason that nobody had access to the relevant passwords in the company.
So you say a large enough system to warrant two admins requires the root password to operate normally?
but what is this doing on Slashdot?

How is the CIA supposed to sell military tech to 3rd world despots and dictators, if the bastards keep stealing it for free ?
Considering weapons is just about the only thing not Made In China, that could actually be a good thing.
Whether the comment was intended to be funny, I find this to actually be a serious issue...
If the predecessor does write the passwords down, he deserves to be fired.
Quick, someone embed the three laws in the linux kernal.
It's too l

I think you do not understand who is the "pet" in a human - cat relationship.
Ok. Who's the one who gets up every morning just in time to feed the gods?
In speed and elegance, perhaps. But not on the überprogrammer salary to maintain it.
Thanks, but I also consider it bloatware now. Is there an option to only compile with the classic UI, and leave out the whole media player crap?
But if you use the operating system that comes on the machine, it reassures you that the operating system will work OK with the hardware.
Except when it comes with malware.

A cat can be trained just as much as a dog can.

Definite proof that cats are better than dogs.
How many cats lead blind people?
