  1. Re:Why so serious? on AT&T 3G Upgrades Degrade 2G Signal Strength · · Score: 1

****Disclaimer*** i work for at&t Sometimes the public amazes me. 3G has been rolling out in the US for about 2 years now. The same length of time as the longest at&t contract. Every customer who has upgraded in that time has had the opportunity to upgrade to a 3g handset but some chose not to. It is the nature of technology to progress and leave old standards by the wayside. How many of you still use 5 inch floppies or 14k modems? The reality of the situation is that there is only so much spectrum depth to be had in each market. The efficient use of that spectrum to promote better services is exactly what the FCC expects from companies. at&t uses 850 and 1900 Mhz in the US. 850 gives better in building penetration and a larger footprint for the tower that 1900. 1900 gives more capacity for users but at the cost of coverage area and building penetration. It's a tradeoff. Does a company keep investing the bulk of it's capital in an older technology, or does it give the customer what they are asking for, in this case 3G speed for data. The 3G handsets that are being sold today are backwards compatible for 2G. All things considered, a 3g handset is a smarter purchase if you are an at&t customer in the US.

Remember, we're talking about a sales person from an Apple store who is not necessarily a geek. She would have been trained on how to show customers both the Photobooth and the Back To My Mac features. She gets points for figuring out how to use that knowledge to take the picture even though the less conspicuous method would have been a screen capture. When has a screen capture been a selling point for a Mac? She used the tools that she knew to accomplish her goal, even if it wasn't the best way to do it.

    Two things.

First, the article is talking about beta testing iPhone OS 2.0. When you work with beta versions of software it's a given that there are going to be issues.

Second, if you look at the forum page linked to at the end of the submission, it shows that the beta 3 firmware was made available today (before this submission was even posted judging by the time stamps) and that installing that corrected the issue. It looks like the expiration date in beta 2 of the firmware was set to 04/08/2008 at 12:00 am, when it should have been set at 04/08/2008 11:59 pm or some such.

The same Mithra who had temples consecrated to him in 200 BCE in Iran?

I'm not saying that Jesus of Nazareth wasn't an actual person nor am I saying that his teachings have no value. I am saying that it is naive to think that all modern religions are not heavily influenced by prior religions that are now out of favor.

I can't speak for anyone else here but I don't doubt for a second the news agencies in every part of the world are spinning the coverage of the events in Tibet for their own goals (Chinese media as well as "Western" media). That's the reason I turned off my tv 2 years ago. That's not what we are discussing. As for the other video, every protest is going to turn violent with sufficiently large numbers of participants. but all of this is beside the point.

The Chinese government is systematically dismantling the culture of the Tibetan people. Has the US done this? Of course we have. I live in southwest Louisiana. I am a Cajun. My grandparent's first language is Cajun French, not English. My grandparents were beaten in school if they spoke French. My government nearly destroyed my heritage so I am not just blowing smoke out my ass when I speak about this topic.

Now my children are taught to speak Cajun French in school. The preservation of my cultural heritage is being financed by the US government and the state of Louisiana. There are festivals celebrating our Acadian heritage such as Festivals Acadiens and Festival International de Lousiane

Can China claim the same thing about the cultural heritage of the Tibetan people? If there is no state religion in China then what the hell are they doing getting involved in the finding of tulkus?

Why are Buddhist temples still being destroyed in Tibet?

It happened with the U.S. in Viet Nam and in Iraq.

It happened with the British in Dol Dol.

It happened with the Japaneses in China

I could keep going but it's just more of the same. If you still don't believe the Chinese army is capable of blatant human rights violations because these articles are just words, how about a video? WARNING THE PRECEDING LINK IS HARD TO WATCH!

A spokesman said (and I'm forced to agree, though I don't quite like it) that if one were to call for a boycott on the grounds of China violating human rights, one should consider that there have been thousands of the usual executions and imprisonments since the games were awarded to China, and no one called for a boycott then. So, doing it now would put the human rights of the Tibetans above those of native Chinese...

I urge you to reconsider your position on this. If I fail to speak against one atrocity, does that absolve me of my moral obligation to speak out against other atrocities? There is no room for growth and becoming a better person in the type of sentiment expressed in the position of the spokesman you reference.

In my opinion the best thing to do would be to boycott the Olympics and cite the atrocities perpetrated on the Tibetan AND Chinese peoples by the Chinese government.

Why bother? If they have to cough up a wad of cash every time they are wrong, would that not be more effective? No, it wouldn't. It would let them buy their way out of a judgment against them that establishes a precedent. Having a precedent cited in future lawsuits would be far more expensive for the RIAA and the MPAA even if the settlement amount in this case were vastly more than what a judge would award to the plaintiff in this particular case. Not to mention the skeletons that would be dragged out of closets during discovery.
