    The whole conclusions seem bunk to me. One of their classic cases of a kid who couldn't wait "Craig, meanwhile, moved to Los Angeles and has spent his career doing âoeall kinds of thingsâ in the entertainment industry, mostly in production."
    I know people who would sell their own mother's soul to work in production. It sounds like in spite of the study's conclusions, he's doing just fine.

    To be honest, I think that if a project has restrictions, then it shouldn't be allowed to be worked on by any organization that has anyone working there that doesn't have the required citizenship status for the project.

    I agree with this. But I also think our system for granting citizenship is broken.

    It was a simple rebuttal to the parent who is basically making a case for an anarchist societal system. The point is simply that we have roads, public education, maintained sewer systems, etc because I pay taxes and participate in our election system. Because of this, I claim this country. I am personally more than happy to accept anyone from anywhere who wants to live, work, contribute, and participate here. Anyone doing that should be able to lay claim to this country.

    What has a citizen of a certain country done to lay his/her claim on a that country

    While I agree that we should not be concerned about foreigners coming here to work, I laid my claim to this territory by the tens of thousands I have been paying in taxes to the government that holds control over it.

    I would have expected something like this from kdawson, not Taco. The pdf from the University of Pittsburgh is just an informative pamphlet for companies looking to hire students while the student is in school (such as internships and co-ops). Specifically "F-1 students are eligible for curricular practical training before completing their studies, as well as an additional 12 months of optional practical training, either before or following graduation, or a combination of the two." It also points out that Medical and Social Security should be withheld if the student is considered a "resident alien" for tax purposes. In other words, foreign students who are living full time in the US while going to school are taxed like everyone else.

    You can actually release software under multiple licenses? This is the first I am hearing of this. And if this is the first I am hearing of it, you can bet almost all of your potential customers have no idea either.

    This is actually an interesting idea. I would be very curious to see a wiki that comprehensively listed the ways that they have been poor corporate citizens. I don't expect many companies to be innocent, but it would be nice to know who is least guilty when I'm considering a purchase.

    In which case, you as a software developer will have to pay to use them. The price is compliance with the GPL.

    I would rather have given you $1000. But since it's already GPLed, I'll just write my own.

    As someone else mentioned, if you're still running Windows 2000 desktops, your support ends officially in 7/13/2010 if you are paying for extended support.

    If your company is not already looking at what needs fixed to upgrade from IE6 and at least defining a plan of action complete with cost estimates, they are going to get screwed.

    That's the point. IE 6 was designed to work with a specific set of web interfaces that Microsoft has limited control over. If websites stop using those interfaces, then all bets are off. IE 6 still works. It just doesn't work with modern standards that it was never designed to work with.

    I don't understand why dropping support would mean that IE 6 stops working. IE 6 will continue to work just as it always has unless Microsoft intentionally cripples it. Just because the Internet no longer supports IE 6 does not mean that IE 6 does not work.

    Their fear campaign is indeed working on me. Regardless of the fact that they have not gone after anyone for downloading yet, they still have the ability. My risk assessment has determined that the risk is not worth it. I have busted my ass for years to get where I am and now I'm busting my ass trying to secure my family's future. I can not afford having that all come crashing down. Note that if you use torrents, you are almost certainly sharing, even if you are only sharing a small piece of the complete puzzle. It amuses me that I can afford the cost of getting caught putting people's lives at risk by speeding in my car, but I can't afford the cost of getting caught sharing music.

    In California, Between federal income tax, social security (which I never expect to see back), state income tax, and sales tax, I'm paying roughly 30% taxes on my modest middle class income. Needless to say, I'm seriously considering moving soon.

    The RIAA/MPAA is not interested in attacking every single copyright violator. They are only interested in making extreme examples of a handful of unlucky people to warn everyone else. Is it working? You betcha! I think twice before I download anything now. I don't have $3000 to settle with, I sure as hell don't have $1.5 million to lose in court, and I have no desire to ruin my wife and I's spotless and good credit history by going through bankruptcy.

    Not to mention that people need to rely on the media to inform them of what is going on (this is just a reasonable expectation that most people don't have the time to research everything that is going on in the government). This is one thing that the media is definitely going to either keep quiet about or be openly on the side of the recording and movie industry

    ignore any bad laws passed. they don't apply to you.

    Try saying that when they finally decide to make copyright violation a criminal offense and want to put you in jail or on probation for file sharing.

    So in the case of OJ Simpson, he is not guilty of murder, but he is liable for his ex-wife's murder, err pardon... his wife's "wrongful death". Honestly if you don't think that I should be able to say that OJ Simpson is a murderer after that, then you have either lost all reason or taken it to a level of fanaticism.

    In this case it is more likely that I forked PostgreSQL, but what's your point? Any company that has trade secrets by default accepts that they are going to maintain it themselves or maintain it with consultants signing NDAs. That aside, what is to prevent me from using mySQL or PostgreSQL without modifications? PostgreSQL is under BSD and there's nothing in the GPL that says I have to make my source available to anyone unless I distribute it, which I certainly would not be doing unless it became significantly inferior to a new system I have developed and I wanted to recover some of the cost of development from the previous system.

    I don't think there's anything stopping you from holding copyright on your work and charging a commercial license fee.

    There are so many examples for this I don't even know where to start. Lets say that I'm a manufacturing corporation and I have a database system and interface that monitors all of my manufacturing processes automatically and warns the appropriate people when a process starts to go out of a controlled state. I don't want my competitors to have this because it's just a huge boon to my output quality and reduces cost by millions every year.

    Which court's burden of proof do I require to call someone guilty outside of the legal system? Criminal courts have a more stringent burden of proof requirement and also have more stringent requirements for admitting evidence than civil courts. If someone is found not guilty in a criminal trial and guilty in a later civil trial for the same offense, can I call them guilty?

    My apologies for being so careless as to use an analogy that has not yet taken place. Please allow my to revise my analogy. Just because a court finds that tomatoes are a vegetable and not a fruit does not make it so.
