The refered article says: "Local newspaper Commercial Times said however that the resolution may not be binding because it runs against fair trade regulations in Taiwan. Officials at Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission declined to comment." Why now then, and not 10 years ago? What's the drip of water that flooded the bucket? (Dutch saying translated to bad english).
Entomologists are people who like to collect en conservate bugs. If you check out the lemma "entomology" at wikipedia you will read:"Entomology is the scientific study of insects. Insects have many kinds of interactions with humans and other forms of life on earth, so it is an important specialty within biology; unlike many other fields however, entomologists include both persons studying insects for their own sake, and those employed by commercial concerns interested in the control of insects."
Who would not conservate the very famous Pentatomidae Metadatadactylo? I think Microsoft is just being very friendly to insects.

I don't know what Zonks idea about nerds is. But I as being a nerd have never met a nerd interested in baseball (but that's maybe because I am an European nerd. If they would make a baseball-ball with nanotechnology, cool. But who gives a damn about sport statistics. Maybe if it was spiced up a little with math or something. Or that owning statistics was a thread to personal freedom. It would be cool if baseball would be played with pingpong-balls, then it would be definately news for nerds. If you want to (or not) own the statistics of baseball, do what you please. Only a nerd deeply interested in anti-nerdness would consider owning gamestatistics a news topic for nerds. This stuff doesn't matter at all. Zonc, you've been a bad nerd;-)
Linux, and Free Software (as freedom and also free beer) is like the ring in Lord of the Rings: "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them". If microsoft would found one way to scrutinize Linux Development, IBM would feel it, Apple would feel it, Google would feel it, Sun would feel it, SGI would feel it.
Bill is talking about IBM. But it's not so strange they suddenly changed their tone of voice about linux. They are talking about interoperatebility.. Yeah right, as they have a track record in that. They suddenly hired some folks from the Linux community. To keep their enemy close to them. They want to learn the weak spots to attack linux with laser point precision power and bring all their opponents and in the darkness bind them. Their tactics of embracing and their kiss of death is maybe a little stealthy but I am afraid this is what they will do now.
When bill says IBM, he isn't talking about a bigger brother (because he knows how a small comapny can harness all the power to become a big monopolist. I think when Bill is talking about IBM, he is in fact talking about Linux. He knows he has to learn about the community to fight it. Bill would be stupid to not have some devious plan which I rather would not see to unfold. All the media fuzz about those companies, maybe Bill has finally found the problem that the community is not a business and there are weaknesses which could slow down the community from developing working stuff. I know that the Free Software is a hard to crack thing but don't we know Bill right now? Maybe not enough.
So many politicians do things which severely harm the democracy of their country, which have been build carefully in their nations history.
We know what democracy is, we certainly know what freedom is. Flander people use your vote to get politicians who enable true freedom of speech. How is it possible so many politicians misuse their powers to restrict this freedom? It is this freedom that is a fundament for democracy and also for their jobs.
This way they get conditioned to get frustrated by not being able to complete a movie when they are eating hamburgers. Some people eat more when they are frustrated. Voila a great business plan.
Why would anyone be so masochistic to watch 10 minutes of a movie, especially if they are so easily downloaded these days?
IT is a matured business (all the hype is gone) and I think it is good that IT isn't so attractive too many. If people think for all kind of (mis)understood reasons it is hard to find a good IT job and see that as a reason not to study IT, let them please not study IT. IT is not for the faint harted. It's for people who have to adapt and learn with great agility, flexibility and dedication. If people don't have that, they better stay out of the kitchen.
The word "Smart" seems to be the buzz of this techno society. Suddenly there seem to be a lot of highly gifted kids, if you would believe all of their "proud" parents.
How can smart people be detected. Not by their grades. Nor by their abbillity to adapt. And even if they would have a tattoo on the head saying:"smart" would they want to be detected? There is no stereotype of smart people, nor is there a stereotype of stupid people. Some "smart" people want/do to live up these stereotypes and others don't. Putting pressure on kids to have them perform to the max is simply a bad idea most of the time.
Because "smart" and "highly gifted" is such a buzzword, real "smart" or "highly gifted" children are harder too help (if they would need help). And in the Netherlands there is so much pressure, as the result we see too many children almost burn out because they have to have the higest achievable level of education. As a result we have to much low quality universities and a shortage of plumbers, etc. In the Netherlands it is so overvaluated, even in the lowest level of education we see teachers who have to let them read books and take exams on theoretical subjects. These kids only want to learn by doing, not by understanding theories. A lot of them become very stressed and unhappy, being unable to fill the ideals.
If you're extremely smart it doesn't mean you have to forfill others expectations. It would be nice if there was more focus on that part. Parents: don't fuck up your kids.
Yes I meant partimage. Nice howto.. by the way. Did you see that they considered my constructive feedback as a "troll"? I really do not understand how slashdot is moderated sometimes.
Someone has tagged this as a troll. But it wasn't ment this way and some other people have the same meaning and got tagged very positively.. I mean, use partimage and IF you want to go cheap why bother windows or norton.. But anyways, thanks for the tag.
How cool it would be to see all these virusses take all the processor time.. Can you imagine how it is to see a DOS attack with a chain of 1000 clusters?
Yes. It is so strange the software industry has problems with delivering quality. Ofcourse code should be as faultless as possible. And ofcourse that means programmers should be educated enough to feel responsible and use some form of formal verification. If it's so poor understood even at the bigger companies, it shows that if anyone who can construct some if-else-construction is easily considered a programmer. I had a little bit of programming education when I did my study of interaction design at an at academy. I have learned myself programming. And it is strange that I had to delve so deep to hear of this very important man Edsger Wybe Dijkstra. Fortunately I found his name and all interesting things he did. I am now learning myself predicate calculus as he first step on the way to program derivation. I would advice every programmer to do so.
"Program testing can be a very effective way to show the presence of bugs, but is hopelessly inadequate for showing their absence."Quote - Edsger Wybe Dijkstra. I get the "jibbies" in knowing that code is tested but not proven correct by design (program derivation).
I know.. The sunblock part was charging a little bit, just joking around.
Ofcourse, were al on the titanic having the biggest luxureous party of our lives. And most people don't think humanity can sink, which is arrogant and ignorant. While most poor countries only suffer and we extract all resources. Not only we extract resources from them but also from the earth and are really pushing our luck with our _not-so-harmonious_way_ with our environment. Ofcourse we get all the consequences. The arrogance and ignorance of the wealthy western countries backfires in all kinds of doom.
But the party is still going strong.. How could we not party, we have built a society which depends on our economics. How to change that.. I really don't know. Too much to do, and it's not easy (if not impossible) to not be dependent of that system.
I think that (anti-)nationalist ideas are part in forming individual identity. China has a very old culture and saying their way of htink threatens the long term investment is one step to far from the reality. These western originated companies have different systems and they cannot trust in complete different systems (such as in China). And maybe we have problems with their culture, so do they. I do believe in human rights and I am from the culture which conflicts with those of for example China, on this matter.
Money is not the only power, maybe it is even not the most important one. I would say having faith in oneself, trust another (to a realistic and wise level) and in mutual interests and benefit is the greatest. These are motivations to invest in clients and reflect also in these ideas of share holders. Thinking and behaving related to have faith and see mutiual interests is done differently in other cultures. Like most people they don't trust what they don't know and at the same time they compete on cultural level. I think it is to easy to believe if some shareholders says its only because of the human rights.. I think there is more to it.
Maybe it's in our genes. Well maybe we have to find out emperically. Or...
Solution:
People are allowed to spoil as much as oil as they can (without an tax ofcourse) but then they should stop making babies.
Well let's hope the scientists don't get too much overheated discussions then.... In the mean time put your stocks on sun block with heavy UV filters, they're the next business hype.

yeah but I made a mistake. It was a loose quasi offtopic reaction, not a real reply ;-)

I think virusses should have voting rights to, especially when they are clever.. It would help us not to get into an illegal "preemptive" war.

Use only linux and artimage. Windows systems are very expensive to administrate, and buying a tool for every missed feature wil make you only poorer.
