  1. Good sleep habits on Using Your Laptop In Bed · · Score: 2, Interesting

My physician told me that doing work in bed, eating in bed, watching TV in bed, etc is very bad for sleep patterns. Not only does it start to "teach" your body that the bed is not always used for sleeping, but it would eventually start to convince your spouse/significant other of that same thing. Just my experience with what not to do in bed.

  8. Amount of content = very little on Why 7.1 Surround Sound is Overkill For Most Homes · · Score: 2, Interesting
There's practically no content encoded in 6.1 or 7.1. And the stuff that is...well, most people probably can't tell a big difference. Example: Castaway is encoded as a DTS-ES disc, which is VERY rare. I'll tell you, I've watched the movie twice now: once in regular DTS and the other in DTS-ES, and I was hard-pressed to tell a difference. The latest DVD release of Top Gun actually has DTS Discrete encoding. Again, I really had to concentrate to hear that extra channel versus my older 5.1-encoded copy.

I did like one point: why would you want more rear speakers than front? The center speaker produces the majority of dialogue in a movie, not the rear channels.

I have a 6.1 system, yes. I didn't intentionally do this. I watch non-digital TV with PLIIx decoding, and watch my movies with Dolby Digital EX. Frankly, I can't tell the difference. That "center surround" speaker is more for bragging rights than anything else.

So just to reiterate, I won't call 6.1 and 7.1 totally worthless, but yes, it is overkill. Movie experiences at home won't suddenly be way better. And the complete lack of 6.1 & 7.1 content makes the format rather pointless.

If MS Antispyware wipes out your Norton install, the fastest and easiest way to clean out Norton to prepare for a reinstall is with Symantec's Norton Removal Tool, aka SymNRT. It's available for free from their website and is designed for situations like this where the install gets corrupted and you can't remove it.

The tool removes every trace of Norton from your system. It does a better job than the normal uninstaller.

Most of the stuff is handled via .BAT files. Spybot & Ad-aware are installed, updated, and then opened by a script. It certainly cuts down on my input and lets me work on a few machines at once.

Regardless, spyware is worse than ever. Retail anti-spyware products are a joke. There are dozens of clients who have Norton Internet Security Anti-Spyware edition who are infected up the wazoo. I'll go out on a limb and say that people think they're invincible with these kinds of programs installed, when they're really not.

Frankly, I don't know what the hype about iPod-phones is...the ability to play MP3s from your phone has been around for several years. My Cingular 2125 (HTC Tornado, rebranded), much like other smartphones/PDA phones, has a MiniSD slot and I can watch videos and listen to music with it.

  21. Replay Value on Games That Keep You Coming Back? · · Score: 2, Insightful
Many of today's games lack replay value. That is, once you beat it, you're bored by it. Doom 3 is like this. Sure, you can go back and try it on a harder difficultly level, but there's not a unique experience to be had again. The first time you play, it's amazing. The second time, you say, "already seen that."

Games like Counter Strike, UT2004, and Quake 3 bring replay value because the experience is never the same each time. This is why I prefer racing games and multiplayer games.

A modern game with infinite replay value is SimCity 4 (and really any other SimX game). You can build a city different each and every time. I NEVER get sick of that game, whereas I'm already bored wtih Doom 3. Same goes for Civilization 4 and its previous versions.
