In a way I agree here, Computer time shouldn't be limmited but ONLINE and Game Playing time should.

Get some programming software and such and let them play with that as much as they want, and show interest in the "cool" programs and stuff they come up with. Come up with different "challenges" for them to program a solution for.

Have a ghost image of the PC standing by when they accidentally wipe out a file. The "Play" PC should not have anything important on it and if they do accidentally wipe something out, let them explore how to fix it and let them help with restoring it.

Limiting their online time is what you really need to do, and it's easy if you have a router or a gatway, just disable the port that that PC is on except for the times you want to allow them on the net, and keep the router in a separate room, or locked up somehow. And when they are on the net, never be where you can't see the screen and when you are done supervising their internet time, disable the port again.

Computers of them selves are nothing but tools, they can be good for kids. Look how well most of us slashdotters turned out. :)

In all seriousness, it's not the time on the computer that needs to be limited, it's the time spent at different activities on the computer that needs to be monitored.

I don't think that grocery shopping online will ever truly come to be lucrative. People might go to a restaurant and buy cooked food, but they still get to send it back if it's not done right, I highly doubt people are going to leave the choosing actual ingredients up to some idiot who just fills orders. Also , shopping is still a remnant of hunter gatherer days, and I don't think sitting at home and ordering online will ever replace it. It hasn't even replaced it for general merchandise yet.

Grocery shopping in person will be around for a long time to come.

One of the many ways MS infects their own stuff. heheh

This story was rejected by /. in under 3 minutes.

Newest MS Critical Update protects XP from own users.

news.com is reporting that a new Microsoft Critical update that was "released Tuesday to fix four Windows flaws, including one that experts predict will be exploited by a worm in the coming days", may also inadverntly protect PC's from their own users.

According to the article: " Installing the patch can cause serious problems, Microsoft said in an advisory posted to its Web site Friday. The patch could lock users out of their PC, prevent the Windows Firewall from starting, block certain applications from running or installing, and empty the network connections folder, among other things, the software maker said."

But there is assurance in the article: "Even if users experience PC trouble after installing the patch, they will still be protected against any attack exploiting the Windows flaw". What they fail to tell you that your PC is now also protected from you being able to log in. If this is the result of stuff they know about, how reliable are their predictions about upcoming worms? (Maybe they are the ones releasing the worm)

This type of protection is much easier to to in linux, nothing to install, just log in as root and type rm -rf /
    ----

I still can't figure out how /. picks their stories.
Maybe they looked at it and rejected it because, it has proper grammar and spelling, is timely, and is not a dupe. Maybe I should start submitting stories in l33t sp34k.

  16. Re:A question for this topic on Napster's Learning Curve · · Score: 1

This is an old one but I will tell you YOU ARE WRONG!

The "barely break even" only happens to the promoters and venues, the Bands themselves are ALWAYS guaranteed their money.

When a promoter sets up an event, they talk to the band, or the bands manager, and set a price that the band will get. The band will get that money no matter what, it is the promoter that is at risk for loss, NOT the band. When the band gets their money, they of course have to pay their manager his/her percentage which is right now around 15%, so if the band agrees to play a large venue for say, $50,000, the promoter, no matter if only 2 people show up will have to pay the band $50,000 of which the manager of the band will keep his 15% or 7,500. The band keeps all the rest.

It is the promoters responsibility for advertising, for paying the venue (stadium, colliseum etc.) for printing of tickets, flyers posters etc..

The only thing the band has to pay for is the expense of travelling there.

If your state really wants to be a reciever of federal funds,I'd say that you all need to get off your butts and put some on your governor to stop vetoing the bills that would get rid of the split speed limit. The Federal government holds back federal funds from stated that have the split speed limit. (That is let's say 65mph for cars and 55mph for trucks) .

Split speed limits cause more accidents and traffic fatalities, also statistically trucks have fewer accidents per mile than cars do, so the split speed limit makes no sense at all.

Oh and it you want to get the reality check, getting hit by a truck going at 55 is going to do just as much damage as if that truck was going 65.

First off, if they want to rebuild New Orleans where it sat before then the people who lived there need to do it out of their own pockets. No FEMA money, No Insurance money, if you want to rebuild, fine, but don't do it on the backs of the rest of the country.

FEMA has regulations, that if you live in an area prone to flooding, or other natural disasters and you are wiped out and they pay you money, you CANNOT rebuild there. There are thousands of acres along the Mississipi where people are not allowed to build on after the floods back in the 90's.

In a little town called Falmouth Kentucky, there was flooding, FEMA forbid the rebuilding of any structures, and now what is there is a big open field in the middle of town.

It seems to me that if they want to rebuild NOLA, that the laws would need to be changed, and if they change the laws for NOLA then they should be retroactive for people who still own land and can no longer build on it.

The government needs to put it's foot down and just move New Orleans to higher ground. New Orleans should not be rebuilt where it was.
