  1. Traitor's gate could be fun on Hyperion to Bring IncaGold Games to Linux · · Score: 2, Insightful

People don't seem to be too impressed with the quality of the games. I haven't heard of most of them, so I can't comment on them, except on Traitor's Gate. The Swedish company Daydream did a game called "Safecracker" way back. A very addictive little puzzle game, you had to crack all the safes in a house with a time limit. One or two of the safes were based on real safes, others were logic, mechanical or cypher puzzles. The game wasn't true 3d but used the Quicktime system where you can stand still and look around 360 degrees. When you click to move forward on one of the hotspots it plays a little movie until you reach the next place where you can stand still and look around.

Traitor's Gate seemed to be a bit updated version of it with a bit more action. There were guards, and you had some Thief style non-lethal ways of dealing with them, but if you were spotted it was game over. The few people who noticed it gave it quite decent reviews.

I've looked through that section several times, but I can't see what you are describing I'm afraid. Perhaps because my computer is too slow to play it without jitters...

What I DID notice though, was the agent jumping down on the hood of the car and crushing it. He looks very fake...wrong inertia with the body, the fabric of the suit doesn't move convincingly.

But hey, details! It's the sequel to one of my favourite films ever. The music is great. I'm really looking forward to it. "Here we go" indeed.

Lord of Illusions (no price for guessing I'm a Clive Barker fan :-)
The Vanishing (the Belgian original, available on DVD from Criterion, not the terrible Hollywood remake)
    Sleepy Hollow
Brotherhood of the Wolf (the monster SF/X is pretty bad once you get to see the monster. That is a letdown, but once you get over that, very enjoyable, it's better the second time you see it. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon in pre-revolution France!)
    The Name of the Rose

    Oh brother where art thou
    Pleasantville
    Beetlejuice
    Young Frankenstein

    SCI-FI
    Gattaca
    Dark City
    The Fifth Element

    DRAMA
    Ridicule (French film)
Regeneration (British WW1 film, based on the book with the same name. Was given a more action oriented name in the US, even though it is set not on the front, but a hospital for traumatised soldiers.)
The War Zone (Most. Depressing. Film. Ever. Not a war film, about incest.)

    L.A. Confidential
    Seven Samurai

  8. Playing hints on Source Code To Dungeon Master Java Released · · Score: 2, Informative

Cool, I can't recall how much time I wasted on this game as a kid.

A hint when it comes to picking characters - rasing your magic skills are the most difficult, and I believe you get an exponential mana increase for every level, so pick characters with high initial magic skills. I believe it was the big hairy monster, the little blond kid, one of the ladies (a priestess or druidess?) and one more...a shadowninja type? Not the coolest characters, but they will be the most powerful in the end.
Ninja skills are increased simply by throwing things, any things. You don't have to hit any monster, at least not in the original. So just dump all your things in a big heap at the end of a long corridor, select one character and start tossing things back and forward until you are bored out of your skull.
Warrior skills are increased more quickly when you are hitting a monster. A good area is the 2x2 square room a couple of levels down which spawns an infinite number of those squeaking broccoli things. Open the door and start bashing on them, and pick up their parts when they die. When you need to heal, just close the door again, feed broccoli parts to your characters and start practicing your healing potions.

there are areas of Java, especially around concurrent programming and network and io apis that may surprise even experienced developers.

Do you have any suggestion for a book or online resource where I could learn more about these things?

I mean, yes, I know a little about those areas, and I know where to find books that teach them, but since you seem to have a lot of experience (I mean it, no sarcasm), do you have any tips for a source that cover these important areas you say Boch neglects, just as well as he does the rest?

    Day Four:

Stuck on mountain with Hobbits. Boromir really annoying. Not King yet.

Orcs killed: none. Disappointing. Stubble update: I look rugged and manly. Yes! Keep wanting to drop-kick Gimli. Holding myself back. Still not King.

    Day One:

Frodo stabbed by Morgul blade. Oh no! Pippin cried. Told Pippin it would be all right as Mr. Frodo far too hot to die.

Did I say that out loud?

    Day Three:

Have followed Mr. Frodo to Rivendell where Elves will heal him. Gandalf told me to help poor unconscious Mr. Frodo get out of dirty clothes. So took clothes off him and gave him a bath. And another one. Then gave him another bath. Gandalf came and told me six baths was quite enough, Samwise Gamgee.

Poncy old git probably hasn't taken a bath since the Second Age.

    Day Four:

Wonder if it is time for Mr. Frodo to have another bath yet.

    Day One:

Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

    Day Four:

Boromir so irritating. Why must he wear big shield like dinner plate all the time? Climbed up Caradhras but wimpy humans who cannot walk on snow insisted we climb back down.

Am definitely prettiest member of the Fellowship. Go me!

    Day Six:

Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle. Orcs so silly. Still the prettiest.

    Day Ten:

Gandalf fell into shadow. In other news, I think I am developing a spot on my nose. V. serious situation, as Elven spots likely to last for 500 years or more.
