While you want your free entertainment in the form of TV shows perhaps some people want it in the form of internet or gadgets to play on.
Also I think the concern given to emergency broadcasts is rather unrealistic. Could tcp/ip not deliver even more reliable emergency broadcasts than TV.
In some of the very sparsly populated and rural communities will there be people with these devices close enough to the TV sets to disrupt it?
Perhaps the best thing to do then would be to explain this to them. Sadly any amount of screening is going to be broken at some point so why not do it on your terms with some planning rather than waiting till they find it in the woods?
Perhaps one could install water cooling on the server(s) but instead of having it lead to a radiator in the case have it hang out of the window. Maybe you could even just use water from the tap and send it back down the drain if you are unmetered.
Simple, when you write the code make use of unneeded white space to draw primitive ascii art. I can't imagine that a general 'shit' shape is hard to do.
If taking the live cd option it might be a good idea to disconnect the CD-ROM eject switch because when people start hitting buttons on the front at some point it is going to eject and cause problems. I know it won't be ejectable while in use but when turning it on people may just hit every button in sight. You can always have the two wires left loose in the case if you ever want to upgrade the live-cd version.
It would be nice if slashdot supported ssl even if it was just a self signed cert I would be happy to memorise it. The number of times I have wanted to log on and I know the guy sitting next to me is sniffing my traffic and then I have to route it through ssh to my server is really annoying.
Maybe this is an old, tried and failed idea but would it be feasible to have site that charges say £5 to register your email address with; they then want to see some form of photo ID and other records. You are then rushed through captchas and let in to register etc.. with no problem. If you fail then you have to go through a more complicated system, and maybe a human manually activating the account for you. I know there are problems with having one central database that takes money for it but could it be done in another way. Web of trust?
Hm.. I can see the advantages for me. I grab a tag and then my best friends won't even have to use a social networking site to ask me how I am. I can finally see my free russian bride in person...
OMFG!!!eleven! I'm a child, I'm reading slashdot. I have one WiFi access point less than a foot from my head and another 10 meters away. I can feel it burning. Argh the pain. In fact just to make sure that I don't mutate (lots of fun programs on that as well) and polute the gene pool I'm gonna electrocute myself now.
T1's speeds are symmetrical while dsl and cable are asymmetrical Um.. I don't mean to be picky but what about SDSL(Symmetric DSL) from what I understand that is in fact symmetrical.
I myself am 13 and know that my parents couldn't monitor what I'm doing but they shouldn't need to. I treat my self as relatively tech savvy and I doubt many adults could track my internet usage. I use tor, ssh tunnels, ssl etc.. for everything. I have scripts set up to fill logs with junk so just reading the stuff would be a marathon task. I'm not encripting my life from my parents I'm more worried about the secret service or aliens *ajusts tin foil hat*. Why bother? Just ask your kids to talk to you.
Well. I'm not suprised. But really if you found a page about yourself in the wikipedia full of critisisms you would think about changing them. Really with a world where comments can be changed they probably will be.
Although having people doing this for seems a bit of misuse of resourses.
Could you honsitly say you wouldn't be tempted to change things critisising about you if you could.
With the power to change things to the way one would want them one would.
I mean it seems to show that big corporations can steal interlectual property just like that but when it is reversed they kick up a real stink. How is this fair?
I know we could forget going to university and just download the course. Then when we have time, listen to it. Then record our answers and send them back. Why did no one think of it before?
True without regulation any company can do almost whatever they want. To keep it even vaugly under control you have to have competition but with out any controls on it one company can raise their price then another will follow almost as if playing catchup with one another to make the most money.
If it is should money be made out of it. Or is the future in blogs and other free items. Should they all be made by journalists of just by ordaniary users like blogs and comments here.
How do you define the internet? A network of computers? So then my LAN is an internet. or is it the domain names. Im sure I could set up a dns server inside my lan. so if I added enough computers would that make it the internet. From what I understand this is about domain names. I guess if the worst comes to the worst we could all just use ip adresses. Even if they change im sure we could link gateways between them like my router. So what is the internet? Untill we know how can we argue who owns it.
If you think about some people who don't want to leave hospital here. Then maybe there will be people who don't want to leave the clinic there. Then they will have to be re-introduced to the Internet to amke them leave the clinic.
What a waste of time and money.

Noo! The slug will dissolve in the oil and make it conductive.
Also can you imagine all those horrible trails over your shiny ICs?

Well really it is 60 years before but let's not nitpick here.

Looks good, I've just installed it and seems pretty good. Being able to just bash in locate: into almost any kde window is great.

But in all seriousness its never harmed me...

I can look into a mirror...
Well too me this seems rather unfair on Apple.
/. for keeping me a wake all night to try and get first posts.
In short he had the volume control and it was in his power to change it to the correct level for him.
It sounds all too like the person who burgled and empty house and fell though the rotten floor boards. Then he sued.
He shouldn't have had the volume high enough to damage his hearing anyway.
It seems like saying I should sue
I'm sure if he wins many more will follow though.Could this be the demise of Apple?

On what you call friendly. I'm sure some people out there would prefer a graphics editor without a GUI.
