    I hate gnome shell, but considering Gnome continues to be a great product, and moves forward. I just replace Gnome Shell with Cinnamon, and plan to continue to do so, considering the cripples "classic"(sic) mode.

    ...but seriously https://help.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/3.8/more-apps.html.en look at the applications those look like nice improvements, and look there is a weather application, they will be adding a stock application next. Holy Jesus on a donkey!!! is that a new note Application.

    Seriously did nobody notice the replacement of Tomboy, my last dependency on mono...because its great. I've been waiting for an Android version for *forever*, but this http://worldofgnome.org/bijiben-or-just-gnome-notes/ looks like something I like more.

    I tried Cinnamon on Mint 14.1 and found it to be freezing frequently

    Very little I install on my computer does not just work. I don't mind Unity, and prefer it to Gnome shell but Cinnamon has been an incredible project. I am more than happy to provide you with a working video of my desktop :) I suspect your overstating the position. BTW you can install cinnamon on Ubuntu.

    I'm sorry, as a [I like to think better ;)] than average Slashdot User...or at least not an AC. I have to say Users love the silent background updating of Mozilla, [Business Users less so], as it allows large features to hit users sooner [I'm loving the new PDF reader]. In fact most users here prefer *release often* strategy its part of their culture [it is mine]. Hell my whole OS gets updated every six months, perhaps you live on a stagnant platform, with occasional releases [read years apart].

    These are the top selling games on Play right now (they are having a Disney sale), but as you see its a nice mixture of Racing; FPS; Puzzle; Tower Defence; Violent Open world games...and Minecraft.     Windows gaming has been treated like the ugly stepchild for years, and really the latest SimCity saga is just another example of how badly treated gamers are. I personally had been driven away from windows games for years. I have only been brought back by indie games from the Humble Bundle that don't treat me like cattle, but there are now 5 humble bundles (it has its own store) of cross platform...the current one http://www.humblebundle.com/ is Android only!? [and not just for twitchers] Suddenly I'm several gaming tablets / consoles under $200 [some under $90] with more on the way. I already own two. My Linux gaming suddenly has more choices than I can cope with,as suddenly cross platform is the platform as choice!? [not an expensive afterthought] with Android often being thought of first. This device signals the end of windows gaming...they would have been better getting proper firmware support for their mice under Linux, as many of us are fans of hardware, and its a growing market.

    I mainly pick up games on kickstarter...and initially games were pretty cheap about $5, the companies got seed money during development, and maybe I get a game...all of a sudden those games have shot up in price to $20, its gone from funding development to payment upfront...I haven't funded a game in a while.

    It seems like GTK+ is thriving despite Gnome 3. Is this the case?

    Gnome 3 is wonderful....Gnome shell on the other hand (even with extensions) is poor, with cinnamon, it is better than ever, the applications are all coming along nicely, the only one suffering the gnome scalpel is nautilus (and some of it is justified)...and well there is Nemo for that too.

    I have a NVidia card and I don't want to use any Nouveau crap. X11 will stay on my PC. Linux might not, but X11 will.

    Except NVidia is swimming upstream with their binary drivers, and its excuses to the world are looking extremely shaky, when its competitors are open source; its bad business now Linux is the becoming the dominant OS and Google clearly favour hardware they can fix. Personally Its nice to see most Linux users moving to intel.

    I'd love to to I am just running through my daily ceremony of eating each of Androids codenames, which I do three times[On friday I fast to remind myself of less fortunate Operating Systems], followed by bathing and chanting the words "smarter mobile devices that are more aware of its owner's location and preferences". Then I do the holy "status bar emptying"....The daily cleansing of the internet doesn't start for hours.

    Except that is only part of the problem. Apple App Store and Google Play both have 700,000 Applications, if Yahoo did *another* App even if they marketed the Hell out of it...who would notice. Why would they stop using other Applications that they are familiar with to use yours irrespective of origin. There is a reason why only a few Applications of this type dominate.

    Seriously, you got that from "Swedish Language Council has removed "ogooglebar", or "ungoogleable," from its annual list of new words after pressure from Google to respect its trademarks."...I don't think that is sound logic :)

    As for your suggestion that Microsoft would get chastised for defending its trademarks which it does *all* the time. It doesn't; just nobody cares. You should google it :) If you look at the page dedicated to Microsoft Litigation on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_litigation it has links to some of the more popular trademark disputes.     I'm not sure why the comparison with a cellphone. Currently I'm using it as XBMC and using my Android phone as the remote. It was a toss up between the Pi and the ultra cheap AndroidTV dongles that are kicking around (Why I think AppleTV is dead on arrival), and overall I couldn't be happier stupid setup errors aside [power supply too weak on the pi to power the usb; couldn't get wifi working on the minimal distribution?] Otherwise its incredible, and using the phone as a remote control has changes my life.

    There are a few compromises with the pi [512 memory & missing sata] otherwise I'm overjoyed with the source. Killer feature, you mess up you wipe your card and your good to go.

    The bottom line is your old phone is less versatile with less support, but its great at being a phone...which if its the task you want go ahead. Otherwise its such an incredible strange question.

    I'm a little tired of people of people aimlessly quoting that, without understanding the relevance. Is this a without facts article, about something contentious, or simply a question.

    The article is about using software to pick *keywords" to solutions to problems that other fields have already solved. Its something *everyone* is familiar with here a whole host of "On the Internet"; "On a Mobile Phone" type crap...or interface innovation that mimics real life behaviour(Almost everything on a computer does from email to social networking), or imaginary from real life. The whole concept of the mobile phone only happening not due to magic at Sony, but due to certain technologies becoming mature.

    Its not just a yes, but something we should all be aware of, its also seems fairly trivial to do. Worryingly for those with a lot of cash, an ideal way to search a related technology, and *patent* technology that is otherwise obvious, or relevant as the field has matured, or identity gaps in things not patented.

    Yeah i bought one of those the thing i love most is it's massive 32 gb non removable hard drive.

    Comes in a 64GB variety too :) both come with 3 year 1TB storage through Google Drive. It also has a card slot :). To put it in some kind of perspective I'm using Linux Mint and I'm currently using 6.74GB.

    Therein lies the problem with Linux and it's ever weak adoption rate.

    Linux only ever had one problem, and that was the Windows Monopoly. In the context of this article, Windows is such a massive failure in mobile, it burnt though any karma it could have had with its abusive bullying behaviour, that its treated like a cancer giving clown. Android is set to overtake Windows as the Dominant OS, the heavily locked down version of Linux. The power user version of Linux [Give it a name], where you have complete control has been quietly growing market share quite nicely for some time.

    LOL. It's not ironic. It's imaginary. There's no significant move towards Google Chrome or Google anything else for that matter in the OS space. There are three players, and only three: Microsoft, Apple, and linux. Apple's got the ball right now, as their machines can run all three OS's, all at once, legally and legitimately. If you're worried about movement, worry about Apple. Google? No chance.

    No Windows is primarily a touchscreen OS, with locked down hardware its like a poor android....you not been paying attention to this article...Its main feature is an updated

    I call the Google Os because Chrome is doing very well right now [Although personally Its not an OS].

    As for Apple being a Success on the PC front quite the reverse, Apple is suffering from its own Post-PC marketing [I would argue Neglect] suffering a year on year decline of 22% sequentially 18% or about 4 times the decline of than the rest of the industry.

    Personally though I'm enjoying the benefits of sharing the kernel with Android/Chrome with Gnu/Linux :)

    Guess what? Consumers generally consumes content on their computers... you know, the vast majority of human beings.

    And most of those consumers have already largely switched to smartphones and tablets. In a vain attempt to win them back, Microsoft has sacrificed their competitive advantage with business users – you know, the ones who actually pay the vast majority of their licensing fees...

    Its kind of sad really that that Desktop monopoly is so hard to break, Microsoft keeps throwing its customers...and its partners under the bus, just to do it again. Its ironic that both of these groups are moving over to a Google Os. Business Users still feel pretty trapped, but will keep their older hardware running as long as Microsoft let them.

    Maybe I'd better luck wishing for some higher res displays as standard on notebooks... How is it that cell phones need 1080p displays, but for doing real work, 1366x768 is supposed to be great ?!

    ...maybe you should look at a chromebook like the pixel. [2560 x 1700 at 239 PPI] which has a higher than 1080P resolution :)

    Do you really want to live in a world where one platform wins?

    ...that is built from open source software [the kernel], using open standards, on predominantly open hardware, used on a massive range of hardware ranging from phones/tablets with extra electronic paper/lcd screen, has stylus/gamepad for input, some even include projector. So yeah...pretty happy, hopefully the proprietary hardware/software/standards that the old abusing monopolies like Apple/Microsoft will be gone one day.

    Its a massive step up from the nightmare duopoly that stagnated the PC market.

    I carry a 3DS in my shirt pocket whenever I wear a shirt that has a pocket. It fits fine.
