And the Chinese gov't will ban "Western" systems too, no doubt. That way, if there's an insurrection they will have total control of the "switch" to turn off all non-military GPS systems, or better still to scramble them so they give misleading results.
Wouldn't it be illegal for him to copy all his commercial software onto media he was handing over to someone else? Or did the judge's decision protect him from lawsuits from Micro$oft, Adobe etc...?
As people point out, it's a shame that he had to end up with jail time, and it does seem disproportionate to the amount of harm he personally caused. But look on the bright side - it sets a precedent that might speed the passage of SPAMmers to "pound-me-in-the-ass" prison!
No, the UK has exception for any TV's that aren't used to receive broadcast video. The wireless telegraphy act and it's ammendemnts specificaly state it's the USE of euipment to RECEIVE BROADCASTS that needs licensing.
They only rephrased the licences a couple of years ago. Nowadays it refers to "...to install or use any equipment to receive or record television programme services...", but it used to refer to "...equipment capable of receiving television signals...", which meant that legally you needed a television licence to own a silver teaspoon.
The original "Elite" on the BBC Micro has got to qualify in the top five! Name me a single PC game that uses the hardware as completely and efficiently as that did? Many games since have been as playable, but none more playable. Truly absorbing stuff.
A friend and I run a board based on PHPBB2, and we discovered that seemingly trivial changes, like switching the default state of the "I am under 13" button, can really screw up spammers!
We run the board with "Guest" accounts enabled, but by limiting Guest postings to only having a maximum of one URL and only linking to on-site images. This simple measure has reduced the amount of SPAM appearing on the board from several a day to... none!:-)
The logs still show all the failed attempts to create accounts automatically and posts that have been rejected for breaking the "Guest" rules; if anything, these are increasing, but not a single one is appearing on the board so frankly I don't care.:-D
About fourteen years ago I had a newly fitted IDE hard drive burst into flames in exactly the same way as this. I traced the problem to... a faulty mounting screw! To be more specific, the mounting screw was the right thread, but about 1.5mm too long. It went through the screw hole, out the other side and just (only just) ground into the edge of the multilayered PCB, shorting tracks on several different layers together. If there hadn't been a little burn mark on the end of the screw I would have assumed spontaneous combustion, but with that clue I was able to look through all the screwholes till I spotted the cause of the fire.
I would have made this comment over on the guy's own site, but he doesn't seem to have any form of comment system in place. His loss.
Does anyone else remember when Sinclair advertised their 4MHz Z-80 A5-sized ZX81 as "Powerful enough to run a nuclear power station"...? I wonder if anyone took them up on that?
I also imagine nanites being less destructive, what with being able to slip in between even molecules
Well, what an imagination you have! What are *your* nanites built out of that they can slip between molecules without disturbing them...? (Hint: The next thing smaller than a molecule is an atom. Single atoms aren't nanites, and when you stick several together you have a molecule...)
It's also possible that only stupid people assume that because someone posts in English on Slashdot that they are American. Despite Bush's constant harping on about "Democracy" those of us out here in the rest of the World are all to aware that you don't practice it in your own country. That's what I was trying to point out.
Repeat after me: Terrorism is when you fly planes into skyscrapers, not when you allow free elections.
What's your definition of a "Free" election? Does it include the person who actually received the most votes being declared the winner? Voting machines not being rigged? Insert your own punchline [HERE].

Is he refusing to give a DNA sample, or refusing to give blood? I certainly wouldn't give blood under any circumstances, because I am needle-phobic, yet I'd be perfectly happy to give a cheek-swab.
"I don't understand (nor will I ever, I suspect) why the people in the middle want to get more of a cut of the cashflow, without actually doing any extra work."
"Want"? Oh, that's easy. "Money for nothing? I want some of that!"
What I can't understand is why the middle-men think they could even *appear* to *deserve* to get a bigger cut of the cashflow under these circumstances; justifying that is the issue here.
"So why was this followed by years of IE only sites?"
When Netscape gave away the easiest-to-use web editor at the time we had years of Netscape-only sites; when they stopped and Micro$oft started bundling a free web editor with home installations of Windows we had years of IE only sites. See the connection...?

Earth, Air, Fire, Water... What's the fifth one?
Is that the same group that was trying to engineer pigs with toes so they could produce kosher bacon sandwiches?
"Do you think that Google's 'sneak peak' search access increases sales or violates copyrights on intellectual property?"
Peek.
How does that help someone who owns a portable MP3 player? (As distinct from an iPod)

Yes. he is an annoying little cult.

Does a person wearing a digital hearing aid need to pay for an "intermediate copy" licence to listen to their iPod?

Well, I would have thought the answer was obvious - real scientists must infiltrate Hollywood!
