My housemate recently got two of these little furry things, and although repulsed at first. They have never bitten(unlike hamsters and gerbils) and actually play hide & seek. They're very intelligent animals. Great for those who can't have dogs or cats I think. I think the tail turns a lot of people away.

I really don't think 10x better compression would be a huge selling point. Maybe for streaming media. But as more people adopt broadband they'll continue to stick with MP3.

As far as portable players go, you can get a 10gig or 20gig Nomad that will hold more CD's than the average person will ever own.

  4. Accusations against Flash on Macromedia Pushes Flash For All Things Web · · Score: 1

I'm not exactly saying that an all Flash site is great, but as far as accessibility is concerned, that is the designer's problem. And last time I checked most of the HTML only sites I've been to haven't been totally browsable for people with disabilities.

Second, you may want to make your site viewable to as large an audience as possible, but in the end you exclude some no matter how hard you try. They give the stat that 98% of browsers have the Flash plugin. Anyone have figures to dispute that?

You will get yourself in a sticky situation if your navigation is based on flash and someone doesn't have it installed. They really need to make a detection scheme that will redirect a browser to non-Flash elements if the player is not installed, that works 99.44% of the time. Hard to do, but that would help alot. It would allow the designer to use Flash and provide a backup.

Always keep to the motto of KISS though (Keep It Simple Stupid) Unless you NEED Flash for something avoid it. Don't try using DHTML to do similar feats thoguh, ugh what a mess that is.

With Konq, you can have the option asking if you want to open the popup, sure it's just as many clicks to close the dialog as it is to close a popup, but at least it won't download and render and the dialog is always right in front of you.
I've been using Konq (without the rest of KDE) as my web browser and file manager for sometime now and have been very pleased with it. It was only a few days ago that I installed Rox-Filer and the newest galeon, which is alittle faster than Konq in my experience. AA Fonts work much better with KDE apps than GTK+(constant crashes)

Maybe the years are just passing quicker. But I thought with the excellent graphics, quick load times, and the awesome game controls DC would be around for a lot longer. I was so pleased when I went into my local video store and saw an entire row of DC games for rent. Now they'll soon be disappearing and being replaced with sh*t PSX2 games.

More and more I have seen school boards chant that they have to stay modern, and a wired school with computers in every classroom is absolutely essential. I don't know about anyone else, but that is the sigle dumbest idea ever.

Now don't get me wrong, having a pod of computers for student use is good, but they do not belong in the classroom. Simply because they do not educate students in anyway.

Whatever they could teach a kid about computers is going to be outdated in 5 years anyhow. Even learning to type might be a waste of time in the next decade.

Picture a parent asking their kid what they learned today. "Well today we were going to learn about division but my computer wasn't working so we learned how to scandisk, reboot, scan for viruses, reboot again, listen to Jermey get yelled at for unplugging Suzy's mouse, after the teacher spent 15min trying to figure out why it wasn't working."

    1) Duron 600 with an Asus A7V with the VIA KT133 chipset, which will probably have just as many little problems as the KX133 did, seeing how they're just about the same. tentative price $250+

    2) Celery 2 566 overclocked to 873Mhz+ on the very excellent stable 440BX chipset price $215

I was all for getting a Duron, but now after waiting and waiting for a decent mobo, they're coming out overpriced and castrated, just what I wanted. Bah, if no one was allowed to know about the clock multipliers before hand I'd have nothing to complain about, but it's kinda like hearing from a friend that he test drove a kick ass car. This review is yet again another whole hearted disappointment from Katz, I've got to stop reading his articles. Katz picks up on what he sees as every little inconsistancy in the movie. Guess what, go watch any sci-fi movie. Of course there's going to be little problems, that's because it's not REAL! If it were real it'd be rather boring. Don't like not having how the Titan works explained? Then I guess since they didn't tell you how the Fifth Element works must've made that a bad movie too.

It's really all about the expectations you go in with to the movie. If you're looking for the messiah of all movies to unfold before your eyes every time you goto the theatre, well yeah you're going to be disappointed 99% of the time. I went to see Titan AE for some good entertainment, which it definitly was.

One of my favorite parts of the movie are the sound effects. The ice moving around in the ice rings and the blasters were particuarly good. Also thought that the soundtrack was kinda fitting. I can't say I agree totally with the sound they picked, but the way they used it in the movie was pretty cool.

I think the point that Lars made that hit me hardest was that they were going after the company Napster. Not the fans. He said he felt bad that the fans were being drawn into this becuase it wasn't their intention to do so. They simply see Napster making money off of copyrighted works, and I'd have to agree. The scary thing is they do want to go after Gnutella etc.. which are file systems. If they become monitored or outlawed(both equally horrible)... it's time to move servers to Russia, and then when they finally get around to regulating the servers in Russia, we'll just have to take the moon, it's our only hope to remain "free".

If someone wants to download an mp3 from me, I'll just stream it to them. And they can save it as they listen. No one seems to mind that at all when it's done on the radio.

What is causing all these problems is simply there's a new medium. Humans have a tendency to fear anything they don't fully understand. Now please don't take this the wrong way when I make this comparison... but what did the 'establishment' of the time do when the hippies started popping up? As far as I know there are some rather some unpleasant events during that period. We're not all that different. We're not the majority... but we're enough to have those in power fear us.

We're not rolling over though... and that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Brainwashed of our self-confidence, we couldn't take to the streets because we'd be embarrassed. Online we don't have to worry about anyone seeing us though. Maybe it's time that they did see us. We always said we didn't care what people thought of us. Then how bout we act on that. We just need to be organized. If you can promise a geek that there will be alot of others with them they'll be alot more likely to show up.
Stop eating the middle class jobs that the rich are throwing at us. Stop being a labor force and start being a political force. Realistically no one but geeks takes what's happening on the internet seriously, because it's not real for them. If we take it offline it will suddenly become very real to everyone.
