not really.. no firewall. i got a router. spyware? i notice when i'm infected. anti-virus? i scan when i'm asleep. anti-spam? you show me something anti-spam that'll work and i got some ocean front property in arizona where the fountain of youth has been undiscovered.
a lot of people ask will middle america wake up to this? the answer is no. there is many types of free kinds of software available online to combat spyware. there are online services from trendmicro that will scan your machine for viruses and spyware. why not take the time out to do that?
oh wait.. previous slashdot article.. people with spyware infected machines think that their computer is just running slow and it's just time for a new one.
probably in 5 or so years, spyware and virus will usually be in the same sentance, because not a lot of people take it seriously. i believe that a lot of browsers (*cough*IE*cough cough*IE IE*cough*) do very little to stop the spread of spyware. however, microsoft is making slow strides by eating/taking over giant antispyware, who had an awesome product!
basically you need microsoft antispyware, bhodemon (to check for IE BHO's), tcpview from sysinternals, clamwin's free anti-virus scanner, and especially firefox. i don't even have spyware scanners on my desktop anymore since i've stopped using IE.
the sandwiches sell for cheap, what makes you think that they're going to invest into some high-tech system that you would except at a work place?
plus i seriously doubt that the bureaucracy at DAI (who own subway) will impliment such a costly system that will take a few years to impliment.
also reminds me of the fraud problem surrounding the mcdonalds monopoly game.. its almost to the point where restraunts will just take your money and won't offer you a customer reward program.
dont think the stamps are a problem? i found a ebay auction.. 400 stamps for $31 from malaysia. (don't try and use them.. they won't use sequential numbered stamps).
the subway sandwich franchise has recently stopped doing the sub club cards with the lil stamp things because people have been stealing the stamps from stores, putting them on eBay, or distributing the stamps to friends. it was almost to the point of that only stamps generated from that store were accepted there only, or only about 1 card (8 stamps) was the max accepted at one time, because you'd have people come in with 4 or 5 cards with consecutive numbers, which means someone had to buy atleast 32 6" subs to get 4 cards.
what's subway's new idea? smart cards. they'll swipe a card that keeps track. i keep telling the owner i know that there will be fradulent smart cards because someone's gonna crack the system on the card.
it's almost to the point where you can only accept cash these days, but you gotta check that with a money pen or check it to be legit. you got stolen checks, fake checks, counterfiet money, everything.. what's the world coming to?
if you're ultra-paranoid, couldn't you just ban all robots from robots.txt, i'm sure there are non-compliant robots.. but legitimate ones like Google should abide, right?
buy an education or evaluation of visual studio. i'm not sure if they have it, but i used vb back when i was about to graduate high school ~2000-2001. its worth a try.. it might compile code and everything, but won't do anything the few thousand dollar version does.
dont trust visual studio links in your e-mail for $20
i've found a gang of romanian scammers on a popular IRC server because a friend's machine was compromised for spamming. i joined the chan and just monitored for a few hours.. i logged everything, e-mailed them to the IRC administrator, and absolutely nothing has been done.
