  1. Wiki on Lockheed Martin Purchases First Commercial Quantum Computer · · Score: 3, Insightful

I attempted to get a basic understand of quantum computing from Wikipedia, and maybe find out how a quibit measured up to a traditional bit, and what adibatic meant.

    Whelp...

I will never make fun of another old person who is unable to grasp the concepts of computing and computer interface that I use every day.

  2. Oh, I'm well aware and I'm kicking myself for not making that clear. What I was asking is why Mr. Coulton thinks one song about giant squid is enough.

  3. I've been to a dozen of your shows and I'm always left wondering, why aren't you writing more songs about giant squid or other intelligent mollusks? If you're going to have one (and I don't count Octopus because it really isn't about... you know, an octopus) why not go all in? As everyone knows, the giant squid is the unofficial marine invertebrate mollusk of the current pro-nerd trend that has contributed so much to your popularity, and deserves more recognition in song form.

Haven't the giant squid suffered enough? Can't you find it in your heart to reach out an additional tentacle and maybe feature a super-intelligent robotic cuttlefish or a nautilus that has realized that it's species hasn't evolved in 25 million years?

Perhaps you'll be the one Mr. Coulton, to help America, and the world, put this sad chapter of not writing more songs about squid behind us.

  4. This just in... on Fable III Dev: Used Game Sales More Costly Than Piracy · · Score: 1

Game developers and marketing executives have determined that playing games is bad for the gaming industry.

"We're not like any other industry." said developer Nertlebaum Q. Tinkerbottom, lead designer at Poopsock Games "If we produce an inferior product, we still expected to get paid as if we had made a best-seller. Honestly, if gamers would just buy our games, and never play them, the industry would be in a much better position."

Fookyu Baka, chairman of Nintendo's Games Marketing division echoed the sentiment, saying "In perfect world, Nintendo would produce new systems every four quarters, and utilize already developed properties to generate sales. Our development efforts could have ceased in the mid-80s and we would realize continuing returns on, at most, six properties."

TiVo's senior director of IT, Richard Rothschild, for instance, explained how those set-top boxes track everything you watch for advertising and marketing and then combine the information with supermarket membership card data to determine how effective ad campaigns are.

I feel at least partially responsible for this. When I was working for a large cable TV head-end provider, I pitched this exact idea to upper management. Not as a way to track people, but as a way to prove to advertisers that cable advertising was effective.

I was told that the idea was unworkable and stupid, but six months later was put in charge of a project to roll out the 'brilliant idea from one of or top executives'.

Obviously, I haven't been hit with the device itself, but I can vouch for the debilitating effects of an intense flash of light. When I first purchased my Alien Bees B800 photography strobe I was very excited to test it out so I rushed to get a photoshoot going with some friends, and while doing so, had some difficulty getting the radio triggers configured properly. I was looking right in to the flash tube when I plugged the correct Part A in to the correct Slot 1 and BAM! 800 watts of light in the face. For the first 20 or so seconds, I was completely stunned. I couldn't breathe, I couldn't see, I couldn't do anything but stand there with my muscles tense and a sharp ringing in my ears. There was a sudden painful spasm in my chest and I must have inhaled sharply because I stared coughing and choking on my own saliva. At some point I fell over, but I never registered the fall or the impact. It took about 3 minutes for my sight to return enough to realize I was face down on bare concrete but I still couldn't get up or concentrate. There was a buzzing prickly feeling in my head which evolved in to a massive ache. I was on the ground for about 20 minutes before I felt like I could stand. My vision slowly returned, my legs felt weak but I could walk. My head hurt, I was slightly nauseous, and for the rest of the day, every time I closed my eyes I could see a huge purple disk for a few moments. /cool story

I shadowed a couple of firefighter trainees while working on some promotional materials for a large city fire department. One of the things I went with them on was a hot room exercise where everyone got geared up, entered a room, and the trainer cranked up some truly massive flames. The point of this was to show you how much heat the protective gear could take and what exactly happened when it took too much. Anyway, cool story short, we melted a few fire helmet visors and there is no damn way that a system with a LiPo battery could survive that sort of heat. You do know what happens to LiPo batteries when they get hot, right?

My god, is this something I can request? I, personally, would LOVE to be octopused during climax. Do... do I get to specify the species, or is that something that comes up during dating? Would I come off as shallow if I told a girl about my favorite species and asked if she could provide it? Should I just accept that while I may want to be Giant Pacific Octopused (E. dofleini) during climax, the girl I'm with may only have, or be able to, Red Octopus (O.
