Sounds more like a gravity-assisted battery that stores the energy used to flip the weights. Still a cool idea, but saying that it's a "gravity powered lamp" is a bit inaccurate.
I dislike Rush as much as the next guy, but is it really so amusing to rehash template jokes to take pot-shots for no particular reason? Well, now that you mention it...
Rush Limbaugh and his chauffeur were out driving in the country and accidentally hit and killed a pig that had wandered out on a country road.
Limbaugh told the chauffeur to drive up to the farm and apologize to the farmer.
They drove up to the farm, the chauffeur got out and knocked on the front door and was let in. He was in there for what seemed hours. When he came out, Limbaugh was confused about why his employee had been there so long.
"Well, first the farmer shook my hand, then he offered me a beer, then his wife brought me some cookies, and his daughter showered me with kisses," explained the driver.
"What did you tell the farmer?" Limbaugh asked.
The chauffeur replied, "I told him that I was Rush Limbaugh's driver and I'd just killed the pig."
That meaning of the word is not used in colloquial speech; if you do use it that way, you (1) risk being misunderstood, and (2) mostly show that you don't understand usage and language levels. Eh? I understood it... and I'm an American, so take that!
Ah, true. I wasn't thinking of that, but for some games the patches have to get routed through direct2drive, where they update them for their own installs. I haven't run into it yet, but it's definitely a pain in the ass.
This is honestly what I do with the games I play. Purchase the game legally from my favorite retailer, install it from the disc, and promptly download the no-CD crack/patch. The only problem that I've seen with this is that sometimes, the no-cd patches will break the game in other ways. Not to mention the hassle of having to wait for the new ones to come after every patch. Lately I've taken to using publisher's download offerings instead, and have been loving it. No CD checks anymore. One time I got locked out of a game after upgrading and reinstalling my PC; but within 2 hours of an email to support, the issue was resolved.
(Upon rereading... ugh, no I'm not a game publisher shill -- just speaking from my own experience)
This is the funniest thing I've ever read in a comment. Seriously, I actually laughed aloud. I mean... the perspective, it's awesome: "I can't believe I won the lottery"... "I can't believe that guy just hit me"... "I can't believe I just accidentally drank a gallon of antifreeze instead of a shot of whiskey"... "Gah! I can't believe that I just ranked five separate comments in five different places! How the hell did that happen?!"
Is it possible a machine on your network was compromised, sending out emails without your knowledge?
I will say I'm oddly lucky in that they haven't yet blocked my port 80 in coming either -- and I've been using comcast for years. Ah, well; hopefully it'll be a long time before they catch up to me. I haven't tried to use 25 incoming though.
Heh, interesting conspiracy theory. Though it doesn't quite jive with the local sendmail instance I use for outgoing mail which connects directly to appropriate relay servers (on 25); or the fact that I sometimes send through gmail, and have in the past used my own Qmail installation on a remote server...
I agree that this is a change, but my whole point was that it was in response to consumer demand. Companies seldom do anything because they're feeling warm and fuzzy about their customers; instead, they must always look at their bottom line. With Win2K->XP, the bottom line wasn't affected enough (or much at all, really -- more on that momentarily) to justify continuing to offer Win2K. WIth Vista, it is. It's that simple.
"But the businesses!" you cry. And I agree, to an extent. The thing is this -- the truly large companies that make up the most lucrative part of HP/DEll/etc's business don't care all that much. They will continue using the older versions until they're good and ready to upgrade. If the machines come with XP or Vista, they'll downgrade themselves as part of standard deployment. I say this from experience -- in the companies I've worked for -- each with tens of thousands of desktop systems -- the first thing that we do is install the standard approved Win2K image.
You can bet if the big companies actually refused to buy new PCs (in significant number) from 2k->xp, then they
Anyway, I digress. My whole reason for posting is to say that they are responding the way that they should in a healthy market; and I'm not sure I understand why you found that remarkable. Demand is sufficient, so suppliers meet it.
As an atheist I am offended by this Muslim group deciding what I can an can see baised on a set of beliefs and ideals that are not my own.... I'd be offended too if that's what were happening. Instead, they submitted an online petition with 80-000 [e]signatures. Somehow, I think that the meaning of the word "censorship" has become much diluted. If wikipedia/did/ comply with the request,/then/ it would be censorship - but it would have been by wikipedia, not by the people requesting it.
I don't think the OEMs are doing it out of their interest to the customer. They seem to be offering XP bcos else the customer will take his business elsewhere, never to return. That's... um, kinda the way it's supposed to work, isn't it?
If a period of service in a government seat were mandatory (perhaps required to be able to vote, and receive full rights of citizens?) I think we'd have a marked increase in the average person's political awareness and ability to comprehend decisions that are best not only for them, but for the community/state/nation they serve.
It actually does not put all users as root. FOr root-operations you still need to provide a separate root password. The user account you create at startup is limited access.
What is it with Linux users and bad suggestions? I've struggled through getting one distro to work, a distro that is know for its ease of use, and now you want me to try a different one? Why the fuck do you think I would want to put myself through all that again? What is it with people who shit in the faces of those who try to offer what help they are able? Clearly one distro is not working for you. It will take you download time + 5 minutes to boot to a livecd, to see if pclinuxos works better for you. But I suppose it takes much less effort to simply be a prick. Good on ya.
You might want to try PCLinuxOS; it was the first distro I've seen that immediately recognized and properly configured my WPA-PSK connection (intel) without me having to do/anything/ except enter the passkey the first time I was prompted.

Perhaps someone's been watching Antitrust a few too many times...
Heh - PIX - blast from the past - which model? (Comma he said, apropos of nothing ...)

Nonetheless, a smooth recovery...

Yet another book that sells information freely available. Not to mention one that is rather poorly written, to all appearances...
Now I can go and spend money on prerelease books, before I go out and spend money on the real rulebooks when they're released? This is a new low.
