if someone stored documents in a safety deposit box, is it the fault of the bank if these documents were copyrighted or illegal?
The bank, by storing the documents, are not infringing on the copyrights. But if they were to transfer or copy them without permission, then they would be infringing.
I know the two sources are confusing, but the key point is that the 3rd party, whom is considered to be in possession of music licensed to you, commits infringement when they transfer the music back to you. Only you, the licensee has permission to do transfers, copying, etc.
If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
If a webpage is published online, and Google doesn't index it, does it still get found?

An optimist sees a task in every problem.
A pessimist sees a problem in every task.
The first step in solving a problem is defining it. But I'm not sure if I should be optimistic that Slashdotters like yourself have such insightful understanding, or pessimistic at the sheer scope of the situation. Perhaps a bit of both will have to do.:-|
it's unlikely the author had any idea it was going to be seen by the entire Slashdot horde.

Have you ever seen a CD for only 1 penny, but Shipping & Handling was like 20 bucks?
That little robot may only cost 50K, but Shipping & Handling to the moon is going to require upping your credit limit into the millions.
He was attacking the mac group, which you represent. I'd have modded you down too, if I had points and there were a "misses the point" mod. You've always been able to dual-boot Windows and Linux. The fact that Mac has finally made it to the party doesn't mean "the war is over", it's just a (minor or major, depending how much you cared about mac) development. The reason your comment is irritating and got modded down is that you're blithely evangelizing your hardware of choice, forgetting that some of us might not have any reason to pay a premium for access to Mac OS X.
Thanks for the reply.
I don't fully understand the minefield I walk here at Slashdot, but my point was fairly clear. If all the "sides" currently fighting wanted to get along better, then LINA could be a small step in that direction. Unless of course, getting along with others isn't their goal, and instead they really just want to destroy all "others".
As for "evangelizing" Apple & Mac stuff, I've never owned anything from Apple. This doesn't really imply I hate them either, but it does imply something about the type of hyper-sensistive person that would judge me so harshly, and then moderate accordingly.
if LINA became incredibly popular - would Windows and Mac users really feel compelled to change to Linux?.
That's what I was thinking too, that the sharp line between choosing an OS would be blurred by all of them have common applications. Which is why my parent post was titled "the war is over", but apparently someone doesn't want the war to end. (modded troll) But in this case, who can tell which of the 4 groups the fanboy is defending, or attacking? LOL
Now someone can buy an Apple Mac, with an Intel Processor, and a Microsoft Windows OS, and run all their favorite Linux programs, without feeling all that peer pressure to choose a side.

Why is this effect limited only to mitochondrial DNA ?
I believe that the common understanding has been that the amount used in food items was too small to cause much damage. But this new information might lead to evidence of a long term health risk from even small amounts.
the use of carbohydrates from biomass as transportation fuels will produce zero net carbon dioxide emissions
I'm not impressived by the "net" ammount of carbon dioxide released by one process, if you're going to compare to the "gross" ammount released by the oil/gasoline process.
Try it with your paycheck, compare the gross income or your paycheck to the net income of a coworkers. Don't they have a word for this type of "accounting", specifically when used in the energy sector? Ah yes, they call it Enron-nomics.

Watered-down - If a show is good, and gets good ratings, TPTB will require more seasons to be produced, than can be reasonably sustained at the same quality of the current story arc.
Word-of-Mouth - If a show is good, but gets so-so ratings in the begining, TPTB will cancel it before word of mouth can have an effect.
Sabotage - If any show is sabotaged by TPTB then there is no saving it. Examples are playing episodes out or order, or postponing the 2-hour premiere that introduces all the characters, to air as the season finale.
Listing studies and statistics, is logical if you believe that video games are games, but is futile if you believe video games are something you don't understand or value. If we assume that Slashdot posters, when compared to the general population, are more logical, more male, and more likely to value enjoyment derived from video games, then logical arguments would be "preaching to the choir".
If we assume that those whom believe video games are not fun, have no value, and are tools of the devil, then it won't matter how many "typical immature males" cite numbers, statistics, or logical cause-and-effect studies, the "fact" will remain that I know video games have no value, so it's no surprise to me that they make males violent, and if I can further enhance my power, agenda, and feeling of moral superiority, by being "against violence" and "protecting children" then why would I not do so?
You have described my own state of California to a tee. We've had a "Three Strikes" law for years, we criminalize many addictive behaviors, and our prisons are so overcrowded we have started transfering them to out-of-state prisons.
What you haven't described is why we, California, use these "tactics" to "artificially empower rural areas". By calling it a tactic, you imply a strategy, which implies a goal.
"But given global rural impoverishment, the rural-urban question for the future is not just what rural people and places can do for the world's new urban majority. Rather, what can the urban majority do for poor rural people and the resources upon which cities depend for existence?."
What can the "urban majority do for the poor rural people"? That sounds awfully condescending and elitist, and assumes not only whether they should run the lives of others, but how to.
Instead, why don't we consider systems that have worked successfully. Those of the Electorial College and US Senate, where rural states are represented and protected from exploitation, from the larger populations of urban states.
The problem... Is the people need to stop electing idiots.
Are you sure politicians are idiots? They do exactly what they were elected to do. People vote for whomever will favor their special intrest group with power or money taken from others.
If you expect Politicians to have integrity and to do-the-right-thing, then voters would have to value those ideals and vote accordingly. So if anyone is an idiot, it's your fellow voters.

The ancient meaning of ether is outer space, so I was shooting for both irony and a pun.
We can put a two-legged laser firing robot on the moon, but what are the chances it won't be able to spell ether?
