  1. Forget the safe-bet experts on Sci-fi Writers Join War on Terror · · Score: 5, Insightful

This group is a professinal think tank, those in the picture all look over 55, and to be a member you need a technical doctorate degree. How much of a "deviant" thinker or "rebel" can they really be? Aren't people that come up with the most inventive and "crazy" ideas a bit younger? I like the idea of employing think tanks, it shows initiative which is vital, but if they really want some results I think they're going to have to attract a different set of thinkers.

  2. Looks like a movie representation on Microsoft's Multitouch Coffee Table Display · · Score: 1

In the movies, most any movie where people are using some screen only device, it is only to convey the message or action to the audience, not to actually do work. Sure, maybe some interactive advertising expensive display in a place of bussiness, but other than that it can't do anything. How could one possibly convey anything but the most simple, and expected, communications with such a device? Try it yourself, just walk around today pointing at things instead of talking, and see how "easy" that is.

Manufacturing cd's costs next to nothing here too, the record companies just ask more because they can.

Yep, supply and demand can be odd sometimes. The other day at a store, I saw a movie (on DVD) for $17.98 and on the same aisle was the music soundtrack (on CD) for 18.99. How does the musical audio for the movie cost more than the entire movie?!
  5. Small Disagreements on British Record Companies Win £41m In Damages · · Score: 1

This post shows such an astounding lack of any knoweledge it earns a reply.

Come on now, no need to flame & fight. It looks like you mostly repeated what I said but used words specific to your culture. Pound, pence, labour, & knoweledge. :-)

It's ok for us to disagree on what each of us considers too much red-tape. But I'm going to challenge you to do better than make statements like "the pound is so strong" when it appears you're parroting a sound-bite instead of examining and accepting the underlying economics.
  6. Lower average wage on British Record Companies Win £41m In Damages · · Score: 1

While you're probably right, I would've thought a larger factor to be the lower average wage in Hong Kong.

Sure, it might be a larger factor, but that would only be important if you define a hypothetical base, which there may be. But the clear deciding factor is the total span between the two, the disparity between the two, that causes uncontrolable and sometimes undesirable methods of equalizing.
  7. It should be a clear warning sign on British Record Companies Win £41m In Damages · · Score: 4, Insightful

It should be a clear warning sign when it's cheaper to manufacture a CD, and ship it half-way around the world, than it is to manufacture it right where you live.

One place has too much red-tape and taxes, or one place has too few standards and protections, but in this case I think it's both.

  8. He makes a good point on RPG Devs Should Beware MMOGs · · Score: 2, Interesting

A RPG should focus more on a dynamically changing storyline that gives the player a real sense of interaction, power, and accomplishment. Where as the MMO player will get those from interactions with other live players, but the world will remain static and respawn again.

One example I can think of would be Gothic 2 & Gothic 3. Gothic 2 gave players a real choice about how they would... role-play, being good, or bad, or neutral. Where as Gothic 3 felt like a single player MMO, runnig around killing things, only without the respawns.

what they are saying is people are only generous because it feels good. That is, if it did not give them that feel good feeling, they would not be generous. Thus, everyone is generous for their own selfish purposes. Ergo, everyone is 100% selfish.
Go ahead, try to follow my logic. I dare you.

If I want to give money to a charity, that's selfish, but by denying my selfish desire and refusing to give to charity, I become altruistic.

When will people learn that spying on your children is not a replacement for good parenting? The fact that there's actually a demand for this sort of thing is depressing.

Perhaps when this generation has grown up, they will be determined not to "become" like their parents, by rejecting invasive spying, and encouraging trust and responsibility. Or perhaps the opposite may come true, since they won't know what trust is, they won't ever be able to trust anyone else, and simply perpetuate their own parinoia onto the next generation.

  20. Stealth DRM Sux on iPod Casualties Offer New-In-Box Bargains · · Score: -1, Troll

You probably know this but it bears repeating since so many people seem unaware:
The iPod does not require you to use DRM'd music. It plays regular old MP3s (or AACs) ripped from your CDs or downloaded from P2P or flown in on floppies by carrier pigeon, whatever source you may choose. It has the ability to purchase songs from the iTunes store, but you don't have to and if you prefer another jukebox app you don't even necessarily have to use iTunes with it.

You probably know this but it bears repeating:
No, you cannont use another app like Harmony form RealNetworks, because Apple threated a lawsuit. And people like myself develop allergies to DRM after being repeated to exposed to tactics that force users to upgrade DRM, suddenly disable features, limited plays, limited devices, limited services, locked in to an OS, software, or service, and ultimatly end up with a migraine that has no such restrictions or limit.

Earlier today there was article covering the MS Zune, and now here's an Apple iPod "killer" article. I realize what's important is that both companies are huge, but I'm allergic to DRM, and immune to hype, so neither is at the top of my list.

I'm going to remain hopeful that the next article will both answer your question, and be informational to Slashdotters like myself. Perhaps the gears of the submission machine just need a little grea$e.
