I shut and open the lid on my iBook (circa 2005) about 10 times a day. That's basically 10 cold-boots of the HDD, and it's still spinning just fine 3 years later. I'm not sure when energy savings converges with the price of a new HDD, but it seems to me that erroring on the side of conservation might not be a bad move.
If it really is bad to cold boot HDDs, then @ least we could promote turning monitors off @ the end of each day and for the weekend. I've tried to convince our small company to do that, but I walk around @ the end of the day when most people have left and nearly every single person leaves their monitor on.
The unwillingness blows my mind.
We play Mario Kart DS online and do Skype conference calls alot...we have 2 races going on with ~8 friends...but we can't Skype everyone together because of a moronic, illogical limitation like this.
I totally can't understand this one...
"The current actions of the RIAA are not in my artists' best interests."
Well imagine that, attempting to take the actual musicians & artists into consideration! Now there's a concept!!!
I do believe that's one of the 1st times I've read any statement like that. Shame on the record industry.
What's amazing with this system is that an article like this is being written 1+ years after the system debut! The system went through quite a slum in Spring/Summer 2005 (in my opinion), but a mix of loyalty and good games allowed it to sustain AND climb in sales and popularity. AWEsome.
DS-to-DS play is unbelievably fast & responsive, online play is fast & responsive, plays all my GBA games, closes like a clam-shell so you can throw it around without damage, touch screen makes for easy menu navigation......and a mix of unique games and age-old platform games. Games for everybody. No wonder it's popular.
It's one thing to use company time to run your underground piracy scheme, but to budget that sum of money to do it is beyond bold!
And what of this Ferguson character?
"As we continue to peel back the onion, every time we turn a corner we find something else that doesn't look right,"
Well duh, how long have YOU been letting this go on? It blows my mind that people in charge can be so removed from what's going on...
Interesting thought...I always welcome a smooth transition. But it'll be sad and it will be infuriating. I don't know about everyone else, but I often have trouble receiving a channel well because it's signal is weak or because my antenna is not well placed. However, it's analog, so while the colors get screwed up or the audio fuzzes out a little, I can still view it & I can still understand the dialogue.
But yikes...when we go digital? I'm going to see that inorganic noise made up of broken framerates, pixelated images, and ear-shattering screeches of the unearthly kind.
This is why I am NOT a fan of the transition at all. It'll be like satellite, I assume...where you either get the channel, or you don't.
This is an example of someone looking for someone else to point the finger at. While I would love to see more developers take their coding very seriously, the systems in question are way too large and typically developed in way-too-tight a schedule to every expect developers to monitor their implementations as cautiously as to personally be responsible for security vulnerabilities.
And maybe the GAT testers should actually test their contractors' software instead of pushing it through.
Right...Palm did what they wanted, & they did so with Graffiti as well. I fell in love w/Graffiti on my Palm IIIxe, and really found it orgasmic when I continued to use it for writing basic on my plain-jane white Zire. But when I got my Zire31, Palm changed to Graffiti2 which was nothing like the original...it req'd 2 strokes for many letters, when the original only required 2 strokes for x. I was very frustrated, & the hack to go back to graffiti 1 really didn't work.
They had a loyal customer, & upset him GREATLY with that move.
...But you have to use Cingular. Doesn't this turn anybody off? The idea of being locked into any service provider when choosing a device turns me off every time, but it seems that the masses are indifferent. They just see swiss army knife of digital tools and fall in love?
Well I stand corrected...I was unaware that large-scale diesels were so fuel efficient.
However, I am definitely aware of the longevity of a diesel, and will never dispute that! But our 1.7L civic still gets 42 mpg under load on the highway, which I don't think many other car companies are achieving with their sedans. Put Honda in the game of making Diesels, and do we see the same superiority? It seems reasonable to think so...
Maybe we can hire Honda to make something efficient to put under the hood of those oversized, non-aerodynamic beasts. I mean seriously, when was the last time Cummins was into fuel efficiency?
Wonder who DOES make the diesels in those things...
Say this aloud: "picky@slashdot.org" Get it?

"I take the position that the Founding Fathers took: that the power to tax is the power to destroy..."
Taxing the video game publishers 50% will destroy them, or @ least some of their titles. These leaders that want to obliterate don't even make sense.

...then they better ban the sale of that movie as well, not to mention the Simpsons (Nelson).

Hell yeah! The only 5.0L 4-bangin' mass transit vehicle with VTEC : )
