    Unfortunately, EZ-CD Creator is not free. You will have to purchase it to burn an ISO image.

    CDRWin will not burn ISO files directly. You have to change it to a Bin/Cue format.

    Adaptec EZ-CD Creator software burns ISO images wonderfully. Check out the readme file that accompanies the ISO for details.

    I have to wonder how much Mandrake has influenced Red Hat. I first gave Mandrake a try with version 5.1 because of the ISO image availability and I imagine that much of Mandrake's initial success was built on the ease of acquisition.

    It appears that the student is teaching the master.

    Well said.

    To quote my boss, "A good programmer is a lazy programmer". This pissing match about visual tools such as Delphi being inferior is absurd. The point is to get make cool stuff that just plain works. For many, myself included, Delphi is a tool that facilitates this process. Sure, I could do the visual stuff it by hand with a basic editor and command-line compiler but I'd rather spend time perfecting the heart of my apps, not the interface.

    Good and easy don't have to be mutually exclusive.

    I have never thought that religion and computers have anything to do with each other. But you never know. Anyone know of a way to sin using a computer?

    That's akin to asking if anyone knows of a way to sin using a car. The instrument doesn't sin, the operator sins. If you fornicate in a car, it's not the car's fault but it was intimately involved in the commission of the sin. Computers are tools. The sin is in the use of the tool in an improper manner (like installing NT).

    My boss and I attended his lecture at MIT. It was well worth the time and money. I don't agree with all his ideas but he's one of the few pundits (is that a dirty word yet?) that sees the big picture.

    Also, anyone who put JiveWeb on the internet has to be pretty cool.

    Our executives are actually quite forward thinking in general. We have a lot of leeway when determining which technologies to use. Right now, we are investigating Linux for an emebeded system. Nevertheless, there is a small PHB factor.

    Red Hat is now a know commodity. If I can get Linux installed and functioning, it will give me some ammunition when I suggest a different distro.

    Red Hat is the foot in the door. I can't wait until that door is wide open.

    This is because the whole goal of Linux is choice, which having a viable *BSD option provides. One more good Unix OS is always a good thing.

    Why does the good OS have to be Unix?

    Don't get me wrong, I use Linux Mandrake on my home computer, FreeBSD on my firewall and I'm trying to get some Red Hat boxen installed at work.

    but. . . (and it's a big butt) I believe the crucial element is the "goodness" of the OS, not the heritage or design philosophy. If an OS is good, use it. If it isn't, don't. The Palm OS is currently my favorite OS. It's not Unix but it does its job admirably. Let's not ignore any OS based on its "Unixness".

    right you are, about it sucking, if it really only has 2 megs... what kind of mp3s do they think we're listening to? apparently no mp3 I've got.

    Just downsample the MP3's to 56 or 32 Kbps. You'll get tape or at least FM-quality sound. How good do you think the sound circuitry would be anyway. A 32 Kbps clip would be 1/4 the size and you could fit several "normal" songs on one of those disks.

    Ummm.... in the United States the burden of proof would be on Unisys.
    As long as Unisys can get you in court, you will have to defend yourself.

    It is more finding a stable configuration, and then not mucking with it.

    That makes it very difficult to accomplish anything. I have a co-worker who runs NT, SP4 and won't even dare installing a new printer driver because he finally got his system stable enough to use. So, instead of using our beautiful, new color laser printer, he uses an old NEC laser.

    I have to use NT at work and it is not perfect. I do; however, accomplish quite a lot. Sometimes in spite of the OS, but usually, NT is irrelevant to my productivity.

    That being said, I use Mandrake at home. Can't let Bill get his fingers on my data.

    I admire your enthusiasm but I don't forget that WordPerfect was not created by Corel and it didn't start out life as an Office Suite.

    A short history lesson:

    The city of Orem wanted a word processing application. They went to a Brigham Young University professor and contracted him to write one for them. This professor, Bashton (or maybe it Ashton, I always confuse the two) asked one of his students (the other guy, Ashton, if my memory serves me correctly) to help him out on this project. Upon completion, they asked the city of Orem what they would like to do with the source. Being clueless about such things, they told Ashton and Bashton they could keep it.

    It turned out that other people wanted to ditch their typewriters and Satellite Software Inc. was born. Later, the name was changed to WordPerfect Corporation. I'm sure you are familiar with the rest of the story. Just thought I'd stroll down memory lane.

    Delphi's biggest problem is that is not portable. It is starting to look like borland will port Delphi to linux. Hopefully they will have the forsight to uncouple it so tightly from Microsoft!

    Since the VCL abstracts all the Win32 API calls, Borland should be able to wrap the VCL around a different API such as GTK+ or QT.
    If they are smart about it, just about all pure VCL-based code (no Win32 API calls) could be ported over quite easily.

    I can dream, can't I?

    On another front, since VB and Delphi call the same framework, namely the Win32 API, you can't really call the development tool a GUI framework like QT, Motif, GTK+, etc . . .
    Being tied to NT at work, Delphi and Xnews and Mandrake at home are about the only things that keep me sane at times. . . Oh yeah, my daily doses of /. and UF help.
