How long 'til non-employees can purchase a monthly transit pass? Mega-Corps offering programs that would traditionally be taken care of by local government remind me of the idea put forth in Stephenson's "Diamond Age" . Where corps have become city-states that you work for/subscribe to.
I wonder if there would be a rider allowing you to continue living there, at market value rent. Similair to being able to keep your health insurance when you are laid off, by taking over the payments.

ReactOS 0.3.1 Released
·
· Score: 2, Interesting
What if, as it becomes closer to a release product, it becomes decentralized. Anyone who had done enough work on the original ReactOS walks away from the project perhaps with a public request not to use their work. What if there is no one person or entity to sue? Patches could be written for specific issues by the user community, so support would be distributed as well. Basically, is there a way to spread the legal vulnerability/liability between so many people, that MicroSoft would have to resort to suing thousands of individuals for very small amounts, with a limited chance of success in each case?
You are so right. This administration has endeared us to the world. The leadership and compassion shown through out the Katrina crisis could only be achieved by a true "man of the people". The careful stewardship of our rights and freedoms is commendable. Those men and women who were wounded in battle have been given the very best of care and respect by the government they serve./sarcasm It is because I love my country that I so despise our current president. Stop listening to speeches and start looking at the consequences of actions. Our rights, credibility and morale are gone to shit, while oil companies and military contractors are wealthier and more powerful than ever. I'm not saying that the terrorists should have been ignored or appeased, but fighiting terrorism has become a smoke screen for profit and power grabbing.
I don't think many people believe that Bush or the current British government are facists.
You must be new here.
The difference between Hitler and Bush is not so much in their degree of facism as their love of country. In his own horrible evil way Hitler was very interested in improving Germany, which is what made them such a formidible enemy. Bush on the other hand has show time and again that he doesn't give a shit about America, beyond it's ability to funnel power and money to his family and friends, which is why we are having such a tough time in a war that should have been a clear cut victory.
Orwell's 1984 is a logical product of Machiavelli's Prince being applied to a technologically advanced society. You need a tight leash on all those who can challenge your power, which in a democracy, is the citizens.
The science prospects for LISA are staggering, and it is simply impossible to build an interferometer with a 5 million km arm length on the ground!
Um, the circumference of the earth at the equator is 40,076 km. The average distance to the Moon is 382,500 km. I'm not sure this LISA can be built, in space or not. I know it supposed to be three probes hovering 5 million km apart with no physical connection, but keeping their positions reletive to each other accurate over those kind of distances would be no mean feat.
I agree with you, in rights being "self evident". I disagree with you that anonymity is one of those rights. At it's best anonymity is a form of security through obscurity. Why is this security needed? To voice an unpopular opinion? If that opinion is what you believe, why do you need to hide? If you hide out of fear of a violent reprisal, then the problem is that you are not truely secure in your rights to life and liberty. Fix that problem, don't mask it with a thin veil of anonymity. If you are afriad of social reprisals, well then you have some soul searching to do about your friends. The only other reason that Immediately occurs to me to "need" anonymity, is because you are ashamed of your actions or you are doing something illegal, I see no reason to protect those with a supposed "right".
As an English prof, I'd say that every second you spend worrying about grammar is a second you aren't worrying about the depth / development / support of an idea.
Focusing more on ideas than the clear conveyance of ideas would indicate that maybe you should have been a philosophy professor. Accuracy and precision are our best tools to make ourselves understood.
More subtle things might be even more fun. Tapping, filtering, or modifying the data the satellite is passing on without the knowledge of the country that owns it would be a CIA dream come true.
Anyone living paycheck to paycheck long term, has problems that won't be fixed by the timeing of their tax return. Maybe they need more affordable housing, or some re-education on their spending patterns. But taxation has almost no effect on poverty in the US. Besides if your real concern over flat tax is the poor, just make it a clearly tiered tax system. 0% on the first 50k, 25% on the next 50k, 35% on the next... and so on 'til about %50 for everything over 250K per year. No exemptions or loopholes for anything. Not for kids, not for interest on loans, not for nothin. Maybe allow a limited percentage of your tax to be paid to a non profit instead of Uncle Sam.
I'm hopeing a company(Vonage) dropped alot of cash in political coffers. Not that I'm a care about that particular company, but this might be big enough to be the catalyst for serious patent reform that we so need.
Oh noes. Don't give all the military power to "the intelligent trouble makers". How long before they would stage a coup? How long do you think it would be after that before a certain GPA was required to vote?
It would seem to me that the current policy benefits high tech citizens the most. You can progress farther in your career because you don't get deported after six years, and reap the benefits of very cheap labor in the support and service industries. In a nation of the highly-educated, who takes out the trash and mops the floor? If anything, modern America needs the "underclass" of below minimum wage illegals more than immigrant engineers and scientists.
Why can't they just toss in other "random" RFID chips in the packaging or tape a throw away on to the inside of the passport? RFID scrambling. Is it possible to discriminate between multiple signals originating from less than a mm apart?
"The funny thing is, for me, the graphics have changed. The actual structure of RPGs hasn't really changed that much. I think there's some opportunities there."
Exactly nothing has really changed. Give me an RPG with no leveling up, a storyline that is actually effected by my character, and a goal more creative than "kill the big evil thing"
Which do we really need here in the US? Do we really want highly skilled immigrants to fill highly skilled jobs, or do we want cheap labor that will do the jobs no one else wants to do? Are kids who grew up here complaining about losing construction/landscaping and migrant farm jobs to immigration?
I think this is s symptom of our "nanny government". Anything that goes wrong needs some government program or deptment to take care of it. We have forgotten how to step up and do what needs done on many fronts, not just fighting. "It's not my job." is a permenent loss of power.
Oefelein told investigators he and Nowak both served on the bicycling team at NASA and had been involved in a sexual relationship for some time. He said he met Shipman in November 2006 while he was involved in pre-launch training at Kennedy Space Center. In January 2007, Oefelein said, he told Nowak he wanted to date Shipman "exclusively."
Even if Oefelein handled things poorly or strung her along a bit (I'm not asserting that he did this)her reaction still made her unfit to be an astronaut. She reacts unpredictably to emotional stress, who wants to fly with her?
Talking while driving -- even using a hands-free kit -- makes motorists four times more likely to have an accident, according to David Strayer, a University of Utah psychology professor who led the study, which tracked drivers' brain activity.
Professionals get paid for their work. Now if YouTube sends you a check for a popular clip, maybe you would have a good argument for being a "pro". But I think that could work just as in the defense case of the hooligans they are trying to stop.
Damaging the effectiveness of an important antibiotic in order to make some cattle a little bit bigger is a perfection reflection on the Bush ideology of governance.
Since the potentially resulting super-resistant disease would be a global problem, I wonder if this could be censured by the UN. When you look at the probable outcome of long term use, it is not a far cry to label this as bioterrorism.

where did they find the hot cyclops to pilot it?
low-income people need the money NOW to pay bills

you couldn't have found somewhere for her to work at NASA, given how big NASA is?
Yeah, it's not like there are hundreds of qualified people who would love to work at NASA, waiting for their shot or anything.

I guess we still have a few accidents to go before the world accepts that driving requires all your attention to do safely. Distractions = Accidents. http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/08/15/06081516

Imagine if this had formed on land, say in LA...
