Ok, so one important evolution of the shuttles would be an effective launch escape system where all of the crew is seated during lift-off. I'm sure there are many other issues that need to be addressed with the current design, but that's because the current design is so old. We need take these lessons and apply them, but I think further exploration of space still needs some heavy re-useable ultity vehicles. The shuttles were some real workhorses in their prime. Going back to rockets with single use capsules is not the answer.

That is not as meaningless as you seem to imply. First it still sets a precident, either way. "We will punish you as best we can" or "we will sit quietly and take it". Second, as long as a big deal is made of it by the press, the president will have to further embarass himself by pardoning them. It will keep this issue alive and public, perhaps long enough for people to really demand a return of those freedoms we have lost.

I'm not saying that censorship is a good thing, but we can't give freedom to the Chinese. (We all know how well our other attempts to "spread freedom" are going) But our endless buy of "cheap shit" has helped create a middle class in the PRC, and those are the people that will demand more and more freedoms from their oppressive government. Contrast this with Cuba, and tell me again how economic boycotts help the common people.

As long as they parse their words with the PRC just as much I don't mind. Sure the clear simple decision would be to refuse the Chinese market, until there is no censorship. Then they would be doing no evil, but they would also be in no position to do good for the people in China. As long as they are there, they can have influence. And seeing as they are in the informaion business, it is good business for them to slowly erode the censorship.
