Well that may be true, but remember that the reports are filed under "suspicious activity" not "regular transfers". If so many companies think you are suspicious surely you must have done something wrong!
That's the way the english legal system works, isn't it?
I used to work in a money transfer company in th Uk and I know that any transfer above a certain amount has to be reported.
That part is straight forward, however, any customer who acts is a way which can be considered as suspicious also has to be reported.
What's suspicious, oh all sorts of things, there's a long list of actions which could be considered as possibly suspicious and the final things on the list is, of course, "Any other actions which could be considered suspicious". With a video showing a person who is acting nervous while looking as if he is trying to decide whether or not to transfer some money as a good example.
Keep in mind that not reporting any of these cases is considered a crime, for which the company could be heavily fined or even closed down and it's managers jailed. This of course results in the company reporting as many people as possible in order to escape from the bad side of this ill-defined law. Of course the Customs and Excise commision hardly ever follows up on any of these reports, but it does mean that if at some point some one decides to get you for money laundering, there are probably already more than enough reports made by nervous bankers to put you away for quite a while.
Sorry bout that, guess my html isn't as good as I thought:(.

This will also make you eligible for FREE shipping on any accessory purchases in the future
Well at least that explains how they manage to keep thier review ratings so high. And the people who actually fall for the bait and switch will be the ones most likely to fall for the FREE STUFF line as well.
I'm not a member of any of these shopping sites but I wonder how the sites will react if someone submitted the above link to thier complaints departments.

Is there any reason why a space elevator cannot work like a normal elevator or cable car?
i.e. simply attach the vehicle to the cable and reel the cable in or out from the top?
That would seem to solve the beamed power problem, and you could loop the cable so that as one car was going up another would be coming down (providing an advantage of weight distribution and allowing a second cinch to be added at ground level for extra thrust).
As far as I can tell, the main issue to solve then will simply be getting a cable strong enough to support the whole structure (which is more or less the same problem we have with all the models anyway.)
The simple definition may not be perfect, but it is necessary. It is a measurable approximation of what we generally consider to be alive.
While what we generally instinctively consider to be alive can probably be more accurately described as consciousness (although this immediately precludes things like plants and bacteria and so falls short) it is a value that is really impossible to measure or even define!
For instance how can I prove that you are actually conscious? and not just some mindless automaton prorammed to give answers and perform actions that you yourself do not understand (Of course, you will immediately deny it, but that's just what I would program an automaton to do if I wanted it to pretend to be conscious)
Personally, i'm more interested in finding other 'measurable' qualities in these creatures beyond our planet.
Like 'Intelligence': i.e. the ability to ask questions about the world around, research those questions and find useable answers. Preferably answers (and possibly questions) that we humans haven't already found ourselves.
and 'Friendliness': i.e. the willingness to share above mentioned answers with these strange human creatures who've come visiting, as opposed to the desire to test some of the new planet-busting technology on that pesky little flooded planet!
Well, those quotes were simply the result of a one minute search on google. And taken individually your replies have merit. If what you're saying is that a mere change in pressure (no matter how big) may not necessarily kill a giant squid, I won't argue with that.
However it sounded (to me) like what were saying is 'All we need to do is keep them warm and dark' in which case, the number of failures listed would point towards it's being more complicated (or the previous attempters being really dumb)
Someone else in his reply mentioned two risks of a diver coming up too fast. If he holds his breath his lungs pop, and if he exhales he gets the bends.
By extrapolation you should be able to expect BOTH these things to happen in space. No matter how fast you exhale you won't be able to match the pressure of the vacuum so your lungs should pop anyway. And as your inner pressure rapidly drops, nitrogen condenses from your blood, and you get mega-bends. (AFAIK we still have notrogen in our blood at room pressure, only a lot less than at 100 atmospheres and prolly a lot more than at 0 atmospheres)
And according to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_sea_fish "These fish live at depths of several kilometres with pressures of several hundred atmospheres; as a result they cannot survive at sea level and any attempts to keep them in captivity has led to their death."
So raising them in captivity is probably a bit more complicated than simply turning down the lights and attaching a small refrigeration unit.
Consider: 1.) Microsoft buys AOL, switches AOL to MSN search 2.) Google profit predictions skydive 3.) Google shares skydive even more (becuase Wall street is panicky like that) 4.) Microsoft buys Google switches GOOGLE to MSN search and dances on Google's grave!!!
I apologise for any heart failures above scenario might have caused. But Microsoft's evil like that!
Well, I take it for granted that people going to the onion are looking for jokes not news.
Whereas most people (IMHO) coming to/. are looking for news not jokes (It does say "News for nerds" on the package.)
If you turn on CNN and find them reporting a fantastical story, your natural reaction is to assume they are reporting something which they believe to be true, whereas if you turn on "Little Britain" or another comedy show, even if they are doing a believable news report, you automatically assume it is false and just a joke.
If every piece of apparent 'news' had to be judged by the viewer for 'believability' then what happens when something apparently unbelievable does happen?
How do we know whether the story of the regenerating mouse was discussing real science or was just a science fiction article by an obscure writer?
"How disgustingly shallow you must be if you believe they can't have productive lives already"
"Did it ever occur to you that they are happy with their situation and don't need your pity? How sad that you have such low opinion of people with physical challenges."
Are you saying it's a bad thing to offer a blind person the chance to see again? Becuase that's what the GP is talking about.
No matter how you think he should 'feel' about it or the kind of words he should use. It comes down to a simple question.
Should we or should we not pursue a possible treatment for blindness, paralysis, lost limbs and possible a host of other such 'conditions'?
When someone opens a trusted news source, they tend to belive that every article is actually NEWS!!
The problem isn't that jokes shouldn't be made but that they should be clear as such!
I have never been to the onion before and had no wayof knowing the article is a complete fabrication.
I assumed it was a real Press conference where a Google exec had been using a stupid joke to introduce a new google project (even though no realistic project is described in the article). So, my end impression was that Google had wasted my time. And only after reading a few dozen low rated comments did I find out that it was slashdot doing the time wasting.
A single line like "The Onion has written an amusing little piece..." or something equally small would have been sufficient.
Even if the humour icon had been on the front page it won't have been enough as 'Funny' doesn't mean totally baseless and untrue!
Someone suggested blocking all Zonk articles. All today's front page stories are by Zonk!! Does that mean there is really no news on Slashdot today? or only that Zonk can't tell (or can't communicate) the difference!
Also, the information in books don't disappear after someone stops paying for the webspace!
Currently there is still some information (however obscure) which only exists in books which went out of print 20 years ago. Yet whenever there is a revival of interest, we can always go back to them.
If Socrates and Plato had owned websites (or blogs) the truth is we would never have even heard of them today, becuase the internet is inherently volatile! Once there is no longer anyone willing to pay to broadcast the infomation, it vanishes.
IMHO, although the internet may be the best way of communicating information(or knowledge), books are still the best way of preserving it.
Basically they are saying, since we know that violent media inspires violence, and video games are media then violent video games must inspire violence.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/07/0
many deep sea fish die simply in the process of being captured and transported to the surface due to changes in "temperature and pressure"
and according to this
http://www.sciencentral.com/articles/view.php3?ar
at least one known fish has an enzyme which simply doesn't work at aquarium pressures (so it dies)
And according to this

"These fish live at depths of several kilometres with pressures of several hundred atmospheres; as a result they cannot survive at sea level and any attempts to keep them in captivity has led to their death."

I once saw a BSOD on one of my banks cash machines. I don't know about you but I definitely consider my bank account a Life Critical application!!!
Hmmm, a device that creates a mangetic field in a localised area...?
I think i've seen something like this, they weren't spherical though...
I think they were called... Oh yes, Magnets!!!
There's really little use in creating something that occurs naturally.
"In general male bell curves are wider than women's. Its true of height, weight, IQ, most diseases. It also appears to be true of others things "
:P
In that case would it be accurate to say that men are more exceptional than women?
Or perhaps (even better?) women are more boring than men? Seeing as they are all clumped together around the average like that
