How about the ability to install most programs without having to wait 8 minutes for the source to compile (3.2ghz xeon w/ 2 gigs of RAM took that long to compile mencoder last night):-)
Not that I'm defending it - I use SLES for my server here anyway
Where have you been the past 5 years? Cheney has been President for years. To quote Robin Williams: "Ever notice that W doesn't speak when Cheney is drinking water?"
What are you smoking? If you follow the kind of hardware they've put in at all (their blogs detail it much more clearly than this interview) and have any idea of what real servers actually cost, 5 million may be quite a bit short.
Also, don't forget all the network hardware: 33,000 simo users at x kb/s = big pipe, which is also expensive.
I don't own a 360, nor do I intend to. I own a Wii. I've played the PS3...and while it looks pretty and all that on HD, the adoption rate isn't high enough to sell on the merit of 'look how pretty it is'.
Rather Sony killed their own brand, rather than the Xbox beating them. Add on top of that the Wii is a strong contender to not only catch, but surpass the Xbox line...
AFAIK, ESX simply only loads the Linux kernel to load the ESX specific modules, before unloading the linux Kernel. I could be wrong but that was my impression of how it works.
Don't worry about Wii play - all it is is a $50 remote instead of a $40 remote. Send me $12 and I'll send you the Disc.
On that note, we have a surplus of wiimotes and nunchucks here at the Puyallup WA Toys R Us (on 9th) - and a Surplus of Wii Play, for those interested.
In some environments, being able to open an SSH tunnel in or out of a network would be a security risk while telnet being unencrypted you know exactly what you're getting.
Just as an example, we receive federal funding based on filtering "inappropriate" websites from students. If kids could tunnel their connections over SSH, they would. Though, we also have telnet blocked because there is no need for it:)
As someone who loves debit for the same reason of being able to see the results immediately...I was extremely pissed when rentacoder tried authorizing a $200 payment 4 times instead of once and my rent check bounced, among other $1-2 transactions causing in excess $200 in overdraft charges.
Cult? Cults? Check out the Amway/Quixtar "motivational organizations" with people like Dexter Yager, Bill Britt, and Ron Puryear indoctrinating millions worldwide....
I posted a bid for a relatively simple project for $200 with a one month timeline. Not only did the coder (who had a wonderful rating by numerous people) fail to deliver, they actually used a code generator to spew out the basic framework of the application (which, as explained in my original paperwork was clearly going to invalidate the project and probably violate a few licenses if that were done). At any rate, I extended it out another week, but in the end had to have RAC arbitrate to get my money out of escrow.
Aside from that, RAC itself posted an charge of $200, three times to my bank account causing $95 in overdraft charges even though the original charge did not overdraft the account and the others were "pending" - something I easily cleared up with my bank, but it was still troublesome.
The whole experience made me bite the bullet and do the coding myself...it took longer and a lot more work, but I think it was worth it...
Dark Age of Camelot's RVR System in my opinion was at its most fun when the population was at its height - now the game community is in shambles as population has dwindled. What steps will be preemptively taken to make sure the population inbalances do not occur, or how will you fix them if they do occur?
Also - how will you manage the community? That is, will it be completely hands off like DAOC or will there be any GM events to encourage community building?
Im a network admin for a school district - we DO lock down the machines, and have a very good content filter (as mandated by federal law), and we DO block myspace. Still, every time I go into the schools I see some kids on Myspace - there are way WAY too many proxies out there - we even block on wildcards and site heuristics - but its not enough. Private proxies over ssh...the list is endless.
Packet shaping has helped a bit (www.packeteer.com) because we can allow them to go to myspace (so they don't try to get around it)...but we crank down the district wide bandwidth for the site down to 5kbit;)
BTW, is there actually a practical use for Wake-on-LAN (i.e. a real-world scenario for it)
I work for a school district with a sub-standard WAN (READ: 1 T1 link for a school with 500 computers with internet access) and no WSUS or patch management distribution servers. Wake on LAN, have 45 sites with 100-500 computers connect back to our...*shudder* singular *shudder* SUS server...shut down.
Or, wake on lan, re-image machines with Novell Zenworks, shut down Or, wake on lan, to unfreeze machines from DeepFreeze or, wake on lan to virus scan instead of when users are at work
Well sorry, I'd never seen that.
But I'm amazed at Robin William's ability to use time travel.

Have you not heard of SLES?
On that note, we ordered some books and DVDs from Amazon here in Washington - they shipped within a day and arrived the day after that.
Um, 5 mil for their servers "tops" ?

You can run 100Mbps for hundreds of meters...
No sir, you can run 100Mbps for 90 meters,Wow, Trolltastic.

Games are coming. SSX Blur is great - more are coming.
tzedit indeed has saved us about 50 windows servers. Manual change, but wtf it works and is free

Uh, the 'current' generation of Amway is "Quixtar". Amway was held in such bad regard in North America they actually changed their name on 9-1-99

We do block port 80 and 443 - the only machine allowed out of the network is the proxy server.
Yes.

Problem exists between screen and keyboard?
Don't you mean PEBKAC? Problem Exists between Keyboard and chair (?)

Funny, you seem to forget that our President and executive branch has said to hell with checks and balances, and _IS_ controlling the country.
