Sixth, GoHip.com sounds horribly sketchy. No phone numbers, bouncing e-mail addresses...is anyone surprised?

Everyone here is talking about ActiveX and stuff, but I'm just simply PISSED at this company! Wouldn't you just love to get a baseball bat and sock these guys a homerun? That's how I feel about it, I can't explain my frustration with the situation, it just deeply angers me that they'd do this. I am so goddamn sick of stupid assholes like this. Yesterday I was at my friends house for an hour disarming his virus. I've had enough of these kids. I want them in the ring, with my baseball bat.

The way I see it, for a REAL programmer to go to somethign as gay as a CONSOLE system named "Dolphin", it probably would take a good amount of money. Is ID/Carmack not putting up the competition for labor? Are there problems behind the scenes at ID?

I myself am a critic of Carmack, I read his interviews and just don't like him. ID has few workers and loads of revenue. I hope they're treating their employees properly.

It just seems that they're falling apart.

I'm very seriously thinking about investing some good money in this company (well, I'm 18 and don't have that much money, but a good amount for someone of my status)... The stock price is at the high of its life, but that hasn't stopped me before, and whenever I have a good feeling about something like this, it does great.

Kinda like when i bought netopia at 6, 100 shares. today netopia is at 87. 1450% increase isn't too shabby :) I bought it when I had just heard about DSL and thought it was the future. I was pretty right... and embedded linux systems should be the future as well.

also bought amd at 17, now at 42, its been up to 45 or higher very recently. AMD has much growth as well to come, especially if Intel keeps screwing up!

Bought a company called aware at 10, just because my uncle opened my account with 100 bux, so i bought 10 shares. It's a cablemodem/dslmodem company. Shortly it rose to 80!

I don't buy stock because of the stupid numbers, I buy it becuase the future of the company looks promising. There have been others. I think that this technology is VERY promising, and from that standpoint, im' going to buy this stock.

    Any other viewpoints? Thanks!

However, there is a point where the newbies must learn how to do stuff as well, and RPM type things really don't teach much except rpm -Uvh and rpm -e :)

One thing that i propose is that once there is a good, unified standard, that it gets CLEARLY and CONCISELY explained as far as its usability is concerned. Then after that have more in-depth faq's for you pros. Just don't leave out the newbies, please. Linux community won't grow without them, as much as some of you hate this fact :)

This is from the suck.com article.:

But the people who truly deserve the blame for the public's hours-long inability to swap "Steam Engine" jackknives on eBay are the short-sighted, tight-fisted monkeys who managed to build a multi-billion dollar industry on an insecure networking system, something so fragile that it can be brought to its knees by anyone willing to bother. The fact that a target as big and fat as Yahoo is fundamentally vulnerable to something as simple as a DoS attack is a clear invitation to go right ahead and shut them down.

Whoa, that's pretty intense there. They also go on to say that since vandalism is inevitable, its up to the people who will be vandalized to protect themselves. I agree to a good extent.

My question is this: How can you properly protect against many DOS attacks? Once so many requests come in from one IP, you block that IP? I can see problems there, such as if many customers through one ISP go through a cachebox. The way I see it, stopping this is just as hard as stopping the slashdot effect. What types of protections are there concering router-level protection?

    thanks..

PS - I know that packets coming from our ISP cannot be spoofed due to our routers, so if my box (soul.apk.net) caught wind of the problem, nothing would be allowed out anyway. However, I don't think it's always our job to do the security for outgoing traffic.

  11. They have the wrong ideas... on But What About the Commercials? · · Score: 1

It seems that the advertisers are forgetting their main purpose - to make me want to buy their "stuff", or use their service. The successful commercials did this well, such as the monkey E-Trade ad (what are you doing with YOUR money, they just wasted 2mill!), and the Gladiator movie trailer... VERY cool!

The Budweiser overkill wasn't bad, but they've done better with their advertisements as well. What happened to Millertime? Didn't see ANY of that, I used to love those (i haven't watched TV for quite some time).

Now my idea for these commercials would be something very simple... such as having some AMAZLINGLY hot girl pouring whatever Beer all over her naked body, which is covered by VERY small little black censor boxes. WOW, i'll support that beer! you know?

Another idea i kept yelling out is that they should just have NINJAS come out and beat the crap out of the idiots in the commercials.. how great would that be?! :)

Or have one of those BMW commercials where a BMW just flies by going 150 and TOTALS a Lexus or something. WOW! That'd be amazing..

My point: the commercials are NOT giving America what they want to see. And it's very simple: Sex, violence, substance abuse (this would be limited to alcohol in this case), and strong humor. The advertisers must look at who's watching these games and appeal more to it.

one more thing: The dotcom commercials were horrible. i dont like having idiots walk through the street blabbing about better jobs or whatever, it could hvae been done better. And knowing that there'd be SO many dotcom commercials, they should have found a better way to implant the domains into the viewers heads, because i can't remember most of them that did advertise their domains!

The advertising should break through and stop it with the same boring stuff, and make me want to GET what they got! They didn't make me thirsty/horny/excited enough! Stimulation is what is needed... good thing it was a great football game at least! I almost won the pool :/

This here is proof that Congress should not be in control of regulation of technology and should not be making laws if they cannot understand it. Simply having speakers come in and try to explain what's going on isn't going to help either, because many of them won't undertand it, and there's this stupid thing called LOBBYISM.

The same goes for economics. There are a bunch of idiots in Congress who don't understand simple laws of supply and demand, and love to throw things out of equilibrium. If they maybe understood a bit, we'd be in better shape.

All in all, there need to be better technology and economics sectors because they just don't get what's going on, and they're really hurting it for those who DO.

If there's no Diablo II for Linux, i'm going to be in Windows for quite some time, which will hurt.

The RSA patent is one of few examples of a computer-related patent that still has usefulness after it expires. 17 years is too long for a government granted and subsidized monoply.

In working at an ISP here in Cleveland and having made many How-To web pages, I must say that pictures are very essential to documentation, and linux howto's do not have enough of them.

Although many of the text-based unix commands seem to have no need for pictures, even having them pictured would make things easier, so that a newbie would know where to type a command and when.

And then for the graphical interfaces that the newbie will want to see, there should be a LOT more pictures. Just seeing a page full of words is very discouraging, which is why I still hate man pages. I'd rather read 50 pages with pictures around all over the place than 10 pages of pure text. And many others agree. Pictures lighten up documentation.
