Agree. Infact one might be amazed at how quick easy it is to create a 'composite application' in Java to accomplish any range of functions. This is because it's usually just a matter of pulling in from the swathes of well-written and documented open-source code out there and stitching it together.
As usual, any 'discussion' regarding programming languages on/. degrades into the following argument:
"A Screwdriver is more useful than a Hammer"
"No way! A Hammer is more useful than a Screwdriver"
The Tasmanian Tiger once had a very large population, so much so infact thtat it was culled in early colonial times. THIS is the reason for it's extinction; not some sort of Darwinesque genetic inviability.
This makes me think a good idea would be to have some software running on my laptop that invisibly records it's IP address to a log file on an external server. This should be enough in most cases to get a pretty good idea of the location of the laptop when the thief boots it. Might even lead to an exact location if the ISP was forthcoming. Has this idea been thought of? Is it in use? Obvious problems with the idea?
Umm, the fact that there are 700,000 phones not accounted for in this equation _might_ mean they are sitting on shelves.
It could just as easily mean innaccuracy in the assumption that only 20% of those sold have been Unlocked!
I believe what most people want it ONE consolidated appliance they can play games, watch digital video files and rented optical discs, etc. Having to plug in an optical drive (or worse - TWO) and have it/them dangling off to the side is cluttered and unsightly. This is the part that turns people away from M$'s "We are format agnostic" strategy.
uhhm, you've completely mixed-up the meaning of DRM. In true narcissist style, you assume they named it as if it was meant to protect the rights of YOU. Obviously, it is rather designed to protect the rights of the original recording artist(s). So it does, in effect, manage digital rights.

What makes you think a high percentage would be informed IT consumers?
Cue the Apple ad-writers to create another amusing 'person analogy', this time with Apple represented by a trendy guy in comfortable but well-cut clothing and Ubuntu represented by an acne-ridden teen hacker.

of course, we have no metrics on how many times it HAS worked because those people are't in the news, they're in the Bahamas.
erm.. surely the act of categorizing 'nerds' and 'dorks' itself - and taking it personally - is ample evidence of dorkiness?
Yes, Colonials culled the Tassie Tiger to extinction.
I believe the closest genetic relative would be the Dingo.
