Besides, who owns a DVR anyways??? I thought they were all leased, like cable modems (in most cases).

I use my DS (I actually have two) as my alarm clock. It works very well for me, I live in florida and when its stormy I lose power frequently. the battery charge lasts more than a week, as its in standby 23.8 hours of the day. Sometimes I'll grab it for some mariokart, but I'd rather play on my Mac. I'm looking at chipping my wii here in a few weeks, unless nintendo provides a compelling argument to stay legit for online games. We'll see.

Probably not over the standard composite connection.

  12. Re:Math... duh...? on Music Execs Say Apple's DRM Hurting Industry · · Score: 0

Limiting prints of CDs won't help them. If someone wants a hard copy of an album, but can't purchase it in a store, where's the next place they'll look? .ISO on the net? Why buy a lower quality iTunes rip of a cd? Even if the person eventually finds a hard copy of the CD they want, the labels still don't make money on the people who couldn't find one.

Limited CD prints will only drive up 2nd hand sales, at best. Its not like people are going to pay $50 for a CD, at least not very many people.

Music is controlled by cartels, but they don't seem to realize that they can't create artificial demand by controlling supply, because the supply isn't truly a physical object. You can give them credit for trying to act like thugs and druglords though.

I'm still wondering if the quality is really there, but by several accounts no one's been able to watch because they haven't finished downloading :P

  24. Prioritized networks? on Bugs Plague New Xbox 360 Video Service · · Score: 1

I have wondered quite a bit how Microsoft runs the proxy caches for this service and how they are ensuring that their end consumers are not creating high amounts of internet traffic while downloading HD video.

Isn't a full HD rip of a 1 hour show a few gigs? It would seem MS is selling compressed files, wouldn't it? I can't imagine anyone really using this, with the exception of premium channels, because digital cable isn't really that expensive. Even if you're in an area without cable service, (lets say you had broadband, but DSL only) there's still the option of satellite (speaking about the US of course :P).

This whole deal appears to be Microsoft's attempt at consolidating multiple forms of entertainment under its own service. They aren't the first, but they're launching a VOD service on a game console with only 20 GB of storage space (or 0GB of storage space if you have a stock Core X360 :P).

Can anyone comment on the quality of the shows?

  25. Colbert on Should Google Go Nuclear? · · Score: 1, Informative

Stephen Colbert's persona (the one he uses on The Colbert Report) doesn't equate to someone with a Doctorate. The show isn't called, "Dr. Colbert plays the Devil's Advocate for Haw-Haws." He plays himself as a showboating ass, therein lies the comedy.

You comment on people calling themselves doctors when they aren't medical doctors is asinine. You wouldn't call someone with a PhD in Physics a doctor? How about Mr. Martin Luther King (plagiarism conspiracy theories aside)?
