I certainly look forward to the effects this will have on civilian production vehicles. Hopefully the price and quality of hybrids and the like will get a boost like things usually do when the military adopts technology. Think GPS, night vision, etc.

It would definitely be nice to see a hybrid vehicle that is capable of light/medium truck duty. There's a decent niche market of RVers who jumped on bio diesel for tow vehicles.

  4. Re:paddle wheels in the heat stream on Heat Wave Shuts Down Alabama Reactor · · Score: 1

I don't follow the first problem you stated. Most recreational vehicles (just as an example) have a gas absorption system as the refrigerator. This is primarily because the only energy needed is heat. This heat comes from an electric element (120 volt, typically around 325 watts), or from burning propane. The propane used burns at a small flame, about the size of a butane lighter. You can briefly touch the burner assembly when a unit is running, though propane is a little hotter. I don't know of any location where a gas absorption refrigerator cannot be used.

Perhaps I misunderstand the application you mean, but basic kitchen refrigeration definitely applies.

The wikipedia diagram on gas absorption kinda sucks. Here's a more specialized (and purdier) diagram of a specific application.

GTA series hasn't had fancy cutscenes in the last 3 games (I don't remember, I think 2 might have). Mission setups are just waypoints and objectives, I'm sure they don't take up much space. Audio clips and textures/geometry are going to be the killers when disc space is becoming an issue. The "cutscenes" in the most recent set of GTA games seemed to be in game, as the models were exactly the same, and there wasn't really any mpeg artifacting that I've noticed.

My point is, swapping discs halfway through the storyline wouldn't really work, as all the map geometry would have to be present on BOTH discs (or more) to keep the sandbox premise. Space could only be really saved by cutting out some of the mission-specific audio clips, and actual mission information (which would be miniscule compared to everything else).
