.. but usually mosquitoes instead of frogs. I saw a documentary about extracting the blood they ate and making clones of the animals it belongs to. All I remember is to stand still and you will be fine.
My wife was reading over my shoulder while I laughed at this so I had to explain the joke. I think my geek status has now gone up several level, but I'm not sure that was a good thing...
I don't know - the Mozix cluster at work achieves about the same efficiency... I.T. won't listen that there is something incredibly wrong as I employed as a statistician so obviously know nothing about computers!
My laptops designed for Windows sticker is on the fridge in my old flat. I just hope a Slashdot reader got that house and thought "I knew I could run Linux on a toaster, but Windows on a fridge..."
What about games such as Age of Empires - I assume the rating for that has to be reasonably low. But I could place my houses in a way that spells FUCK OFF or something equally childish. Now the game contains inappropriate language for its rating...
How are they going to see footage of everything that can happen in a game? I assume that they are not just talking about cut scenes.
I think the main problem is that the company supplies the footage to be reviewed. How many marketing/PR guys do you think that goes through before it reaches the censors. Perhaps it would be better for a group of independent game players to generate a representative reel of footage. I will be the first volunteer to take that job. On second though - imagine all the crap you would need to play!
Replying to my own message I know... but going away and thinking about this some more, they will probably try looking at the Y chromosome. The Y chromosome is passed down intact in the male line so will give a very strong European signal if a Roman ancestor was a direct male only ancestor. I'm guessing the mitochondrial line which is passed down in the female line would be no good as not many Roman solders were female...
Why are immigrants rights groups getting angry. The article says it would be applied to illegal immigrants (or at least the summary does - no-one read the actual article do they?). As a person who has only briefly visited the USA, my understanding of the law was the illegal immigrants had very little rights and they are obviously committing a crime being in the country illegally and all... I have no problem with DNA samples being taken from people committing crimes.
There are genetic markers that separate the Asian and European populations quite well - much study of the difference between these populations has been part of the HapMap project.
I haven't read the article... but I don't think they will use the standard 13 markers used for e.g. paternity testing. More likely to use the chips that contain more than 500000 markers to get a good coverage of the genome. Assuming only one Roman was in an individual's ancestry, after ten generations 0.5^10*500000 = 488 markers would be from the Roman. Only one needs to distinguish Asian/European ancestry for some sort of proof. It would still be difficult to make an definitive statement about Romans but give the good circumstantial evidence I don't think the burden of proof will be too high.
I think you need to consider the audience that the article is intended for. As far as most people think, anything that attacks your computer (including spyware/adware) must be a virus. The article is not the place to explain the difference to the masses. Also, the "no need to worry about security" statement is not far off for the average user. Most easy to install linux distributions are reasonably secure by default - sure there is a lot more that can be done but for your average PC user knowing that their computer is not going to become infected by a "virus" is most of their security concern gone.
If I had a friend who knew nothing about Linux and owned a PS3 and thought it would be a good idea to learn Linux by running it on a PS3, I think I would just have to slap them down. You spent $600+ to play games so play games.
On a side note, has anyone managed to screw their PS3 by installing Linux yet - is it possible the combination of shiny new toy and no real Linux knowledge could lead to expensive shiny looking bricks?
I just installed these updates and what I want to know is why updating Outlook makes it your default email application. I know I just have to click OK when I start Thunderbird again but it is annoying that I should even have to do that.
Ubuntu has become very popular, IMO in large part because of the sheer simplicity of a single CD that now can be used both as 'Live CD' and to install a fully-functioning OS. Once it's installed, you can go back into Synaptic and add more packages if you like, but the point is that you don't have to. This should not have escaped the notice of other distros, who would then be prompted to ask the obvious "Why can't we do that?".
This is exactly why I installed Ubuntu on my work computer - I only had a couple of hours to set it up and all my install CDs at work were outdated. We ususally use Fedora around here but Ubuntu was only 1 CD to burn and I was done. I didn't need much more than the base system anyway (g++, ssh, and a couple of other command line tools that were not included [gawk maybe?]).
This was the case about 1 hour before it actually appeared on Slashdot. I was voting in the Firehose section and could not read the article.

WTF?
By "arbitrary solder" did you mean "the soldier who looked most like a baboon"?

So, given what we know about Google, they will just buy/hire some radio-focused personnel. Its not as if they don't have the resources!

I think you are talking about Wii Music.

Looks like a case of an overflowing unsigned long to me...
The article has some insightful comments...
I know the editors have infinite mod points but modding the article insightful before any comments are posted is just cheating!
What is a UAV. Is it like an SUV but smaller - Urban Ant Vehicle?
Only a white page with nothing on it...

Your math is shocking... either that or there has been some technological advances not reported on Slashdot.

American citizens who read Slashdot might want to put in their two cents.
No, thats all wrong. Sony is supposed to pay out...

Or maybe that was the radio star - I always get those mixed up.
