I think the main problem is that the company supplies the footage to be reviewed. How many marketing/PR guys do you think that goes through before it reaches the censors. Perhaps it would be better for a group of independent game players to generate a representative reel of footage. I will be the first volunteer to take that job. On second though - imagine all the crap you would need to play!

Replying to my own message I know... but going away and thinking about this some more, they will probably try looking at the Y chromosome. The Y chromosome is passed down intact in the male line so will give a very strong European signal if a Roman ancestor was a direct male only ancestor. I'm guessing the mitochondrial line which is passed down in the female line would be no good as not many Roman solders were female...

  18. Illegal immigrant rights on US Set on Expansion of Security DNA Collection · · Score: 1

Why are immigrants rights groups getting angry. The article says it would be applied to illegal immigrants (or at least the summary does - no-one read the actual article do they?). As a person who has only briefly visited the USA, my understanding of the law was the illegal immigrants had very little rights and they are obviously committing a crime being in the country illegally and all... I have no problem with DNA samples being taken from people committing crimes.

  19. Re:How can they test? on DNA to Test Theory of Roman Village in China · · Score: 4, Informative

There are genetic markers that separate the Asian and European populations quite well - much study of the difference between these populations has been part of the HapMap project.

I haven't read the article... but I don't think they will use the standard 13 markers used for e.g. paternity testing. More likely to use the chips that contain more than 500000 markers to get a good coverage of the genome. Assuming only one Roman was in an individual's ancestry, after ten generations 0.5^10*500000 = 488 markers would be from the Roman. Only one needs to distinguish Asian/European ancestry for some sort of proof. It would still be difficult to make an definitive statement about Romans but give the good circumstantial evidence I don't think the burden of proof will be too high.

  21. Re:I'm a long time unix supporter... on OS Comparisons From the BBC · · Score: 1

I think you need to consider the audience that the article is intended for. As far as most people think, anything that attacks your computer (including spyware/adware) must be a virus. The article is not the place to explain the difference to the masses. Also, the "no need to worry about security" statement is not far off for the average user. Most easy to install linux distributions are reasonably secure by default - sure there is a lot more that can be done but for your average PC user knowing that their computer is not going to become infected by a "virus" is most of their security concern gone.

  25. Re:Who said anything about one CD? on Fedora Core and Fedora Extras To Merge · · Score: 1
Ubuntu has become very popular, IMO in large part because of the sheer simplicity of a single CD that now can be used both as 'Live CD' and to install a fully-functioning OS. Once it's installed, you can go back into Synaptic and add more packages if you like, but the point is that you don't have to. This should not have escaped the notice of other distros, who would then be prompted to ask the obvious "Why can't we do that?".

This is exactly why I installed Ubuntu on my work computer - I only had a couple of hours to set it up and all my install CDs at work were outdated. We ususally use Fedora around here but Ubuntu was only 1 CD to burn and I was done. I didn't need much more than the base system anyway (g++, ssh, and a couple of other command line tools that were not included [gawk maybe?]).
