Consoles are capable of running great FPS and RTS, just that the developers must take care of the joystick-based user interface
Just because a Console can run a game doesnt mean it will provide the same experience.
Give me a mouse/keyboard for FPS games. Playing FPS's on a joystick just isn't as smooth. Also, its hard to play user mods on a console. Xbox has some mods for Halo, but with a network card and HD make it a more of a PC.
So all I need to know is why should ekkoBSD exist?
Because Rick Collette wanted too? Mostly he didnt like the politics on OpenBSD. So he forked, all power to him.
I know many BSD users who switched to Gentoo because it had better driver support, and the 2.6.x kernel is great for the desktop. Its nice to see BSD and Linux developers start working on both platforms, and playing nicely.
OpenOfice works great with all my files, in fact if it had exchange/templates it would be on par with MS Office 2003. Exchange in 2003 is faster, and has much more features. Syncing email is smooth as silk now over dialup/dsl. Visio has a great selection of icons, thats almost worth the price for the whole suite.
The other day, I recieved a PowerPoint that MSOffice couldnt open, OpenOffice opened it, exported back to.ppt and MS Office had no problem opening that. Very impressive.
But thats for work, at home I save money and use OpenOffice/Mozilla.
The only thing I liked about SCO was a software app called MERGE, but now you can find the exact same thing called "Win4lin" for linux. Lets you virtualize your System to run 2 OS's at the same time.
This is the only company I could see SCO sue, the developers from NetTraverse used to work at SCO.
BTW, the article is a rehash. Every lawyer says the GPL is enforceable.
In the end, Halo is rather boring. Yes, I've played it. No, I'm not impressed and no, I won't get it if I eventually buy an Xbox.
Halo is damn good for multiplayer. Not many instant kills unless you run over someone, which is quite fun. People are burned out of CS, and Halflife 2 isnt out, the only game is Halo.
After a few Halo lan parties, the biggest problem can be how the person running the server configures the maps. Make sure you have lots and lots of vehicals and weapons. Also turn the spawn time down. We setup Ventrilo so teams could talk, and that just completed the game. CTF on halo has to be my favorite. Wonder how the mod community is doing on Halo. (Any Halo modders out there?)
Does darwin support sound yet? I didnt see any sound hardware supported in the driver list.
As for fink, its so nice to have a real terminal window, konsole or multi-gnome-term is far better than iTerm or Console on OSX. Too bad the mostly used app, theres no shareware or freeware that on par and doesnt need X to run. And XMMS or Mplayer while a little more cpu intensive is almost the same boat. Really fink is the first thing I ever install on OSX. (Other than iTunes)
Australia already filters content for its citizens. It just wants to extend its reach to content in video games, which it already has for other publications and Internet access.
Lucky, here in our State of Washington, our gubberment passed a law against video games violence against police/authorities. (No more Counterstrike/GTA3). Our state supreme court threw it out as quickly as it was passed.
Lucky we have some checks and balances in most nations. Strange how all the elected officials try to "Nanny" us when in office. Maybe people in Australia should try to impeach State Labor MP Paul Gibson, chairman of the Staysafe Committee. Can't they vote him out of office?
I tried to sign up with a forum this weekend, and I couldnt tell the letters, Couldnt tell the Zero from an "O". Only a minor problem, still has a few bugs to be worked out. But its nice to have real time authorization, instead of waiting for email to authorize the accout.
Also lots of services, are there any good free downloadable php addons?
Why would you build out an entire network for Public Safety and use 802.11x?!. Go with a Wireless Telecom that specializes in Public Safety that use Edge (ATT Wireless) or 1xRTT. (Verizon). Edge is faster and has larger coverage area, but you need to check your location and see what fits you best.
I recommend using a dual Edge/802.11 pc-cards, for mobiles. Buy a dedicated connection (VPN/etc) to a telecom for Edge, and use 802.11 for hot spots. Most telecoms will also assist you in 802.11x setup, so you can switch easily between networks. The only thing you have to support is the Radius server for authentication. Everything else is outsourced to the Telecom. They can also assist in establishing VoIP and give you additional savings for local public offices.
While technology can save money, you have to weigh the man power required to run it. And with IT/IS departments being understaffed in local government offices, you might want to outsource, the network piece, and just run the server/back end piece locally.
I remember when the Voodoo2 SLI came out, picked up a couple cards mostly for Tribes2, instant 100FPS at the time. Only when the TNT2 came out did it start to match in performance, but there where a couple glide games left to play, so I kept them in.
BTW, I seen that theres an Xfree drivers for old voodoo2's, have not tried it, but with stock piles of voodoo's would be interesting.
I noticed a trend lately that reviews will actually downgrade a game if it's too normal. FPS's (first person shooters) are extremely susceptible to this. The game play can be great, the weapons a good variety, maps decent, but the game play is solid, it gets a mid range to sub-par rating. Not everything had to be ground breaking to be a good game, and game reviewers are biased on personal experience to such a degree, that games can be rated negatively just on its genre.
I agree with the article, that some standards should be put in place, more technical than feeling should be the first rule, then give a mandatory Fun factor.
Also, I'd like to see a review site with more on 3rd party budget games, ones that cost 9.99, kid games, educational, more complete, and links to buy. And a link to the developer and distributor, may sites seem to skip putting who made the darn game.
I stopped reading there. It's "could have", not "could of." You should check your resume to see if it contains any more of these gems.
Right, should have caught that grammatical error. But that doesnt make my post invalid. But glad someone is out there watching for mistakes, heaven knows slashdot needs more AC's like you to point that out.
It could explain why you haven't landed that great job. You look like an idiot when you "don't write good."
Working as the snot nosed grammer nazi on slashdot was taken. Heres your cookie.
Remember, going for quantity rather than quality was what killed 3dfx. How quickly some people forget:)
Well, I disagree. The reason 3DFX was killed off, the partners decided that they wanted to be the only vendor for 3dfx boards, they killed off all 3rd party vendors. Then they bought STB so they could release boards, and that never panned out. So with the 3DFX limited release, nvidia expanded with new OEM partners, and easily took over the market. Vendors need to release boards, even if cheap OEM boards, they need a product to fill. 3DFX took that away from all the smaller companies. And believe it or not, lots of people buy OEM quality products. Even CompUSA and main stores carry an OEM selection selection with a sticker on the box to make it look retail.
3DFX could of lasted another 2 years with the multi-gpu design, and had another GPU in development. The Partners tanked the company, sold few a few million, and walked away. They had better visual quality at the time. OpenGL was a little flaky, but could of been fixed with drivers, they had a great developteam that moved on to other GFX companies.
I had a Voodoo5 and a GF3-ti500 both the hottest cards out at the time. The Voodoo5 with only 2 CPU's kept up almost every game. But after the drivers stopped from 3DFX, you had to move to different hardware.
This is where Sis+Trident=XGI can rock. Trident has been making OEM chipsets for years, Sis makes motherboard chipsets. With a good design, and to use Multi-GPU's to make boards faster, they can cut a good niche out of the low end market.
ATI and NVidia use the same CPU cores for most boards, they just cripple and use the GPU's that dont pass high end tests. This is why when the ATI 9500 came out, you could driver hack it to a 9700. Also they use less expensive ram, and limit the hardware. This doesnt exactly save that much money, a few bux, but the selling price can be 50-100 dollars more. Most people wont spend 400 bux on a high end GFX card, but the 99 dollar sweet spot is a big field, and if XGI can come up with a card to fill that niche, they could come out as the heavy hitter and take over some major piece of the market.
Also, back in the.com days, SIS, Trident made most of the low end, SVGA cards that powered almost every server I seen. Until Intel started putting gfx chips on boards. They have the background, and with the man power out in the market right now, they could easily take 10-15% of the market on Initial release.
Of course, after reading the article, 300 bux release, and not the top preformer, they better tweak the hell out of those drivers. Maybe multi-core could help, but it at the performance of the 9500/5700, it needs a little more performance. Maybe driver tweaks, since its still beta could bump it up. Nvidia and ATI are already tweaking the drivers like crazy if you watch the benchmarks out everymonth, so tweaking and optimizing drivers does help.
- Power by Nvidia, pfft. Spend more time fixing bugs, and less time suckling on the nvidia tit...
I upgraded (if you call it that) from a plextor 16x to a sony 52x (really 48x).
Actually you've got a rebadged Liteon, all of Sony's high speed drives are Liteon's
I was wondering if they where another brand, and liteon gets so many good reviews.. Also I found you have to hold down the eject button while you power on to get 52x. Not really a 52x if you have to hold down buttons. Its a Sony CRX220E1, so that site sonyxrc2xx.org says "Sony CD-RW CRX220A1/E1 = OEM Liteon LTR-52246S" Going to check for newer firmware now.
I upgraded (if you call it that) from a plextor 16x to a sony 52x (really 48x). Compusa had 52x Sony media on sale for 30 bux for 100, figured it was a good deal, and would burn well on the Sony drive. Worst media I ever had, 48/32/16 burns would create coasters, and the media also would fail at 16x on the plextor. The media Did work at 4x-1x, so I used 4x and tossed about 40 bad ones in the garbage.
I also noticed the CD's had a static on them, when stacked, they would stick to each other, not a good coating on them either, and Memorex 48x that I bought was a little thicker, did not have any static on them. Seemed more like pressed CD's.
Not very techinical, I just know that the Sony brand was not top quality, and it felt cheap. So I wouldnt be surprised that some media dies after awhile due to air, etc. And slower burning did work on the media, so I guess burning at 1x on junk media would make it last longer, but who knows how much longer that is.
I just wish there was some technical reviews on media, thickness, quality of materials, burn speed test, tested with multiple media. Now I'm having the same problem with DVDR's, they are now 99 bux for a 4x drive, and half the media I buy only burns at 1x.
Bulk Media for DVDR's seems to also offer the "cheapness" now. I just wish there was standards, or some way of know my data was safe, other than making copies every 2 years. And trying to save a buck per disk doesnt seem to be helping the quality I purchase.
Dont look at it as "Killing is justifiable" but as defending and protecting. While the US might be selective at both, this game is not about politics, its about tactics and teamwork. Like most military training, they train you to do a task, follow orders, not give you the poltical ramifications on peoples religion and the orbit of the moon.
Sometimes a sim is a sim, a game a game. GTA3 wasnt a training aid to kill police, Americas Army isnt a brain washing tool with a political agenda. We have CNN/Fox news for that.
No where in this game that makes political statements. Its all defend or attack based roles. It doesnt just include sand missions, but snow, mountains and camps. I dont think you played it, or you would know this game has nothing to do with the war on Terror, or the war in Iraq.
BTW, as a combat sims goes, its pretty good. Team based, and honor rating. Uses the latest Unreal200x engine, in fact was the first game out to use the engine. Give it a try, you wont see any the political FUD you think. Sitting through the medial training was boring, but helps out in the game.
If you want FUD, cheesy game out this summer, Cave Fighter or something, where you did fight in Afghanistan. But the game was so horrible visually, and game play, it was in 4.99 bin the 2nd month out. It was so bad, I can't even remember the name.
If you beat 100% of an entire episode you get a bonus cruise through LA where you can choose to unlock a special weapon, special car or special combat move.
And they said LA was fully detailed. Cant wait to see this game in action, always liked the freedom you get in these games, and a kick ass collection of music. Mafia was pretty good with the open freedom you could drive around, just missed going into buildings more often in the game, but didnt have the GTA type soundtracks.
The article shows how companies look at the numbers, rather sad.

The post doesnt make it clear, this is about PowerPC os's and emulation. Doesnt mean you can take X86 code, and run it on the netbsd for PPC.
Remember this is binary compatibility, not emulation: programs run at full speed, but only on a NetBSD machine with the same CPU the program was designed for. Binary compatiblity does not enable running Linux/i386 binaries on NetBSD/powerpc, for instance.
So far Mac OSX only runs on PPC. So if you run NetBSD on PPC, your set. But then, Why not use MOL (Mac On Linux)?

shouldn't it be \. so the slash leans to the left like most of the readers?
With YRO posts about Voting and politics you think someone would come with with a politics website for slashdot readers. (No, not the EFF)

Will the G5 livecd work on G4s?
Just wondering if there are going to be G5 distro's only now, or will they be backward compatible.

It has two big buttons, one for left, and one for right. As far as I can tell, there is no longer a way to jump or do tricks.
Wonder why you cant use both flippers for a jump or trick. Simple and no more buttons needed.
