Stop comparing Intels high end cpu's, nobody buys those, they are 3x the price for a 5-10% performance hit. Unless, you like to spend money. (-;
AMD 2600+ won over the Intel 2.5 in Quake3 by 5% at lower resolutions, and Tied at 1600x1200. (Quake 3 allways shows Intel as faster, but only by 2-5%)
If you notice, half the programs tend to either favor Intel or AMD. The reason is.... The programs are compiled with either SSE2 or AMDnow+ which makes a good 10% performance improvement.
Guess what, if you use opensource software, you can compile with either! Even GCC3.2 is around 12-15% improvement when compiling for with AMD flags, and its very noticeable. Im sure SSE2 will give the same performance for Intel...
Check out toms SciSoft Sandra benchmarks, which takes a CPU, and uses it most optimial settings, and then rates the CPU.
Tom likes to say, this doesnt represent true performance, but if you notice when he looks at Production/Media products with AMD optimizations, they are faster. Mp3 encoding, and 3D Rendering is faster on the AMD, WHEN they use AMD optimizations, or same rating Intel without Intel optimzations.
Its upto you, AMD gives the same performace for better price. And AMD has more affordable dual systems, which Intel dropped (big mistake, imho). If your a power user doing production/media work, a Dual AMD will be a very cost effective powerhouse. (Myself, I was dual Intels till AMD 2000+ rating, and I miss the dual cpu and the absent of pausing when multitasking, but the FPS in games is nice...)
Man, keep pumping those fast cpus/gfx cards out, I love it!

Looking at Toms Hardware chart, Rating a AMD 2400+ vs a Intel 2.4ghz, the AMD is faster in almost all benchmarks. Tom messed up when he compared a 2100+ vs a 2400. AMD's system shows that its processor is faster at its rating level than Intel ghz rating . Even Toms Benchmarks show this.
Thou, I do like the number of benchmarks Tom uses, lame, quake, scisoft sandra, pcmark, sysmark, specview, (I wish he would use madonion also).. But trying not to repeat a few posts, when an application is compiled towards the cpu, it will be faster. Look at Flaskmpg, AMD compiled version showed an incredible speed up. Same with GCC 3.2 (check the changes), they said an average of 8.7 (with 2.6 or something from 2.95) so thats around a 11+ percent increase, Average! 3DNOW or SSE2 Optimzation really makes a big difference on bechmarks, programs should support both.
Cant wait to see what happens when AMD starts its 3000+ chips, and the 64bit hammer comes out.:)

I worked for a company that had quad 486 SCO boxes, rather good boxes for a couple hundred people doing customer tracking and parts ordering, each with 3-4 telnet sessions per person. This is when I learned about Merge that allowed our Admins to run SCO/Win311 boxes. (Ok, it was a long time ago!)
I know a few people who run Solaris x86, mostly for firewall use, they seem to like it. It seems to support pcmcia, so 2 nics and a older laptop and you have a portable firewall.
Slighty off topic, but the first sci-fi books I read, Stainless Steel Rat series. The character Slippery Jim diGriz traveled to other planets, and the main spoken language was Esperanto.
BTW, the series rated rather high, so if you like Sci-Fi, you might really like these books.
A young kid wants to be a famous thief, how do you do that in a computer, data driven society?
The claim that capitalism comes without a side of humanity is false.
Corruption has never been so blatantly corrupt since the the 1920s. While there are many good corporations out there, the large monopolistic companies have crippled a large section of our tech industry. The ripples have touched many companies I work with, and will cost everyone MILLIONS.
Hmm... yes. You are aware that the Ferengi were written as fictional characters to embody an absurdly extreme stereotype, right? Assigning the "Ferengi Rules of Acquisition" as capitalist values on their face is either disingenuous or ignorant.
You never sat in a board room during a merger, this is evident. I have never been in a multi-billion dollar merger, but the few dot.bombs I've seen made me sick. I was asked to leave the meetings when I asked about the employees, stocks and profits are the only value. The company I am at now actually wants employees to do community service, they even pay us for those days away from work... I've seen the extremes on both sides. The ferengi would fit right in.
There are millions of people who work in mundane jobs. Are they replaceable? Yes, Everyone is. But to make the point "How Replaceable everyone is" cheapens a persons life. Not everyone is going to be the next Einstein, but that doesn't mean a Mother who raises her children is any less important.
A lot of knee-jerk pseudo egalitarianism going on, too, but that's nothing new.
Nothing knee-jerk about it, total capitalism without a side of humanity will crumble just as pure socialism will. - Ferengi Rules of Acquisition - 109. Dignity and an empty sack is worth the sack.
Could I tell you who filmed Casablanca? No. I am sure there where more than a couple actors, camera man and a director.
I really hate when people dont give credit to an entire team. Same thing happens at my job, Marketing and Engineering will get the credit, and the people in implementation and operations are left out. We put the servers/software into production, fixed all the bugs, redesigned it to work, and we dont get credit.
Just because a persons job isnt important to you, doesnt make it less important. Alot of snobbish, elitism going on lately in posts.
Never said collecting the data was in invasion of privacy, I said if they go looking for criminals in the data its an invasion of privacy. Law enforcement should be held at a higher standard when using data for criminal charges. Some states understand this, Texas for one.
Your argument is analogous to saying that convenience stores can't run security cameras because not everyone's a thief. It makes no sense. In fact, it makes everyone who's not a thief potentially more secure.
Pfft.

Google is ahead of the game with the Hax0r Google version of its search engine.
Now STFU.

Ferengi Rules of Acquisition - 109. Dignity and an empty sack is worth the sack.
Unsung Heros...
Those metal phones sure cleaned easily, and the cloth wrapped cords sure looked nice. I hate these plastic phones, they look cheap and feel cheap.
:)
Hehe, I remember the old slogan "German Engineering" and I think of those old phones that work forever. Even thou they are american made.
Better have a chrisma (3D6) +18 for a task like that.
Pfft.
Its more like, If the store sold your shopping lists to insurnace companies, that you smoke, drink, and eat fatty foods, and then you loose your health insurance. Or maybe you bought, rope, ammo, duct tape, and a hunting knife, and they alert the police, there goes your camping trip. Or you that you bought a gays right newsletter, and they inform your work, and you get fired.

Do you DirectVNC?
Only if they suspect you of a crime, and then its only a one shot deal. If they followed you every day (as in the records of the tolls) its an invasion of privacy.
Well... I just posted about how my Apex 600 wont play some Disney DVDS (Stuart little) the other day.
Plus Someone replied about how the "Cd-noise" is rather common with the newer APEXs. The remotes/onscreen menus are quite horrible. (I own a newer apex ad-1100 also)
I bought a couple Apexs thinking it would be cool to play mp3s/vcd's in the living room. But really, I hardly ever do that, just DVDs. Burned twice with crappy quality, im sticking with name brand models now, most support vcd/svcd/mp3 and are of better quality. Plus my next dvd will have progressive scan. (And hopefully the ability to force skip over those damn commericals/fbi logos)

I remember looking at video cards for some unix boxes, the 2 choices for a cheap card for a long time was Jaton branded pci cards(Trident chips) or Cirus video cards. I tried to go with jaton, the trident chips always had good opensource drivers. I still try to get trident videos card for linux boxes I build, but they are harder to find at local wholesale stores.
The only card I never used, which I heard had great linux support was any Matrox cards, the prices were just to high, and always slower than the others for games.
