Over the years Red Hat has stifled the competition so effectively that the number of Linux distributions has "declined" from 2 (Red Hat and Slackware) to 42 with new distributions arriving on the scene every week (Gentoo, Lycoris).
Check out Distro Watch Very nice way to tell which version of software each distro is running, and current builds. (91 distros on page) Take a look at the newest Redhat vs Mandrake builds, and the software versions.
Quick glance, GLIBC is at 2.2.5 stable. Mandrake is 2.2.5 Redhat is 2.2.90.
Unlike gentoo/sorcerer/etc., no one has to wait while all of the programs compile. While this is an excellent learning experience, a.k.a. Slackware (another great platform for learning the internals of Linux on a very intimate level), it is, in my opinion, not necessary for daily production usage.
For production, you dont want to use a source distro, you want everything the same across your servers, its easier to maintain servers this way. (Wonder what an automated source install looks like, or if there is one.)
But for a workstation, a 386 distro or a source based, a source based will be many times faster. Now if Redhat came out with an AMD TB/XP and Intel P3/P4 builds, there wouldnt be a need for source based. (Other than wanting newer versions, which you could still compile)
BTW, I use gentoo and mandrake, but this RH Null build looks interesting with a standard look between apps. I'll be playing with null tomorrow.:)
Id rather have a larger monitor and a slower CPU than a fast CPU and a small monitor. Size matters.
I want to have more than one xterm open on the screen at a time, alt-tabbing is ok, but I need to see contents in one window while im woking in another.
Well, It is nice to be watching 10 porn videos, while ripping mp3s of the 70's porn style music, and chatting in #hotseattle on irc. Now Intel has released its 2.8ghz cpu, I can be even more productive!
What I like is how the AMD 2600+ is very close on most games either 1-2FPS behind or ahead, and the 2800+ isnt out yet. Go AMD! P4 2.8 $570 or AMD 2600+ $265
In a settlement with the company, the government got $30 million for consumer refunds.
Like everything else, if the government can get a cut, they will finally get its hands dirty... I am normally against the government to make a profit off crime, but its nice to seem the get off thier ass.
The best thing about Premium TV, Its fucking UNCENSORED. Try to watch any movie on normal tv, its chopped, and dubbed. Not saying sex/language/violence makes a movie, but dont protect me, I want sex/language/violence.:)
BTW, I didnt think I would like the V-Chip, thought people would use it to control what I watch. I use it on my kids to block out most of the Premium channels. They get the kid channels and they are perfectly happy. They dont need to be watching Oz or Sapranos yet.
Also, if you live in Washington State, we just built a new stadium for the Seattle SeaHawks. Since they didnt sell as many season tickets, they are yanking all games but ONE from tv. Half the state is over 4 hours away, they wont drive 8 hours total to see a game, but you still pay the taxes. (And still pay off the old stadium thats been torn down...)
Just thinking about a remake of Duke Nukem 3D, They are doing an update, its called Duke Nukem Forever. Been waiting for it so long, forgot aobut it even coming out.;)
Id like to see a remake of Duke Nuke 3D with newer gfx, and sound that works under WinXP. One of the first multiplayer games where you could fly (jetpack) and plant laser trip wire bombs. Nothing wrong with tweaking a already good game with new gfx.
Damn it, only a 3 meg file, and I get download it because its slashdotted. Wait, it started downloading when I writing this post, 9K a sec! Come on baby, finish before his server croaks.
The article was clear at Vans Hardware, he wrote an article using AMDs information... Van Smith should of wrote the article with a little more distance from AMD, but that doesnt alter the facts from AMD.
I didnt see that article over at HardOCP when I posted the news last night. But after reading HardOCP comments, You can see Kyle is really pissed off at Van Smith. Kyle even links to another site Real World Tech where people are talking about Glad someone released the information... Could it be HardOCP is getting ready to release a major article, and Vans Hardware took the spotlight?
There is a hint of back room dealings going on. I picked a new magazine "CPU" that has people from various places. Interesting to see what happens in the next year and major fansites... Heres a list of authors for "CPU" magazine. Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda, Anand Lal Shimpi, Kyle Bennett from Hard OCP, Joan Wood co-founder of Sharky Extreme, Alex "Sharky" Ross, Alex St. John (founder of directx at microsoft), Chris Pirillo (creator of LockerGnome/host on TechTV), Pete Loshin (former editor of BYTE Magazine, runs Internet-standard.com), Lisa Lopuck (Author of Web Design for Dummies).
I recently signed up for the Washington State LP newsletter, quite a bit of stuff going on up here in the Pacific Northwest. I'm really tired of both the Republicans (tax cuts for corps) and Democrats (spend my money on everything) doing the wrong thing time after freaking time.
I dont believe in socialism, but I REALLY dont believe in corporations having carte blanche freedom, which LP seems to lean towards. HMO's in point, Good idea in theory.. But after a friends baby almost died because the HMO didnt run tests (A way to save money). I found out they actually get BONUSES for cost cutting. Bean counters who calculate infant deaths vs insurnace costs should be outlawed.
Just looking around at how capitalism effects you on a daily basis, insurance for medical, auto, health, power costs, savings/stocks/401k, medical expenses, income taxes, state taxes, license fees, etc, you can see some issues with everything. Take Insurances companies as an example, underwriting together to raise your rates no matter which company you use. Credit card companies charging both the seller and buyer and charging interest, Not even mentioning all the other fees.
Maybe I'm the only one getting tired of "Business as Usual", and looking for a way to vent my anger. Supporting the LP has helped some, as I agree with most of thier platform. (And a long list at that, but its scary at how much affects us.)
Judge Kollar-Kotelly was appointed to the United States District Court in May 1997. She received a B.A. in 1965 from The Catholic University of America and a J.D. in 1968 from Columbus School of Law, The Catholic University of America. Following law school, she served as law clerk to Judge Catherine B. Kelly of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. From 1969 to 1972, Judge Kollar-Kotelly was an attorney in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and then served as the chief legal counsel to Saint Elizabeths Hospital until 1984. She was appointed Associate Judge of the D.C. Superior Court in October 1984, and served as Deputy Presiding Judge of the Criminal Division from 1995 until her appointment to the federal bench. Judge Kollar-Kotelly has been a Fellow of the American Bar Association, a founding member of the Thurgood Marshall Inn of Court, an adjunct professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine in a joint teaching program on mental health and the law, and chair of the Board of the Art Trust for Superior Court.
Sadam loves CNN for that reason. Hey look, Operations Bob is going to occur sometime tomorrow, whats that? Troop movements along the northern border. Thanks CNN.

I think if you output to paper, they can use that of a failure or recount. And with the voters name on the paper, each person could read and confirm his/hers votes before submitting. No hanging chads, but you could run out of ink. (or 2 high volume printers, easy fix)
I think more people want to see a physical piece of paper, you could combine the 2, and solve everyones worry about rigging an election.
I hate people have to post anonymous when they say the company ne, or they have to keep the name secret in thier posts.
Anyways... An engineer over at ATTWS ported an irc client to hdml(pre-wap) website, hows that for super geeky. Much better than SMS (imho)..
Heres a tip you might not know, ATTWS to stop spam cold on the Pocketnet service, changed from phone numbers to a 14 digits number, so if you wanted to spam someone, you had to send out 10K emails to reach 1 person. BTW, spam triggers would start and block a large ammount of spam.
Maybe if someone who had experience could write a quick howto on howto file a case against someone. I'm no laywer, and I have no idea what forms to fill out, where to file, whats required of me in terms of paperwork/evidence.
If people knew what it took, 40 dollars and some time would be worth it. I think the "800 pound Gorilla" idea has people thinking it would cost too much time and money.
If you have to use IE (And cant bitch slap the webmaster) try Crazy Browser. It will give you tabs, and stop pop ups. Middle mouse button works also.. David Dolkas, an attorney at Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich, the firm representing VeriSign, said that if the judges were asking "is the DNS database somehow representative of an ownership right, the answer is no."
"Why not?" Kozinski replied. "Why isn't that exactly what it is?"
The first court was wrong, Kozinksi is appealing.
On the the other hand... if the "No Physical Property" argument is true, let the MP3 trading begin!
Actually, to play devils advocate, you can use proxomitron and have better popup/popbehind/popexplode/etc. filtering than any browsers attempt. Then add crazy browser for tabs...
