Because it is very possible that 2 or more drives can fail at the same time. Not probable but possible. If the data loss is not an issue then by all means do not have some other kind of backup. To many people the data loss is bad, so they do a backup.
Speaking from my own experience I have seen drives just go bad. They were not even hooked up. They worked one day, and were dead the next time they were used. I tried the hard drive as a backup solution. The hard drive (which was kept in an anti static bag when ever it was not being used) just died. Instead of one backup, I now have at least 3 external backups of important things.
Duke Nukem 3D will never happen, stop fooling yurselves it anit going to happen they are just trying to feck with your minds and drive you cookoo dont let them do it
Duke Nukem 3D will never happen? I have had the CD of the game since like 1998.
Most people I know with windows 7 have the pro or ultimate (or enterprise) versions. Those versions can download and install the XP mode VM for free. That would be the gamer crowd. The non gamer crowd I know mostly has ultimate or home pro version. Since they do not play games, they really do not care about it. They play facebook games which work no matter the version that I have seen. I only have seen one person use that windows 7 starter edition. That edition sucks.
How XP mode works for graphic intensive games, I have not tried yet. For the old apps it has been fine. For old not online games it has been fine. Those games are not really that 3D or graphic intensive.
If you let them chew on a cable or wire with a little but of current running through it, the rabbit usually stops chewing on wires. Our family had rabbits as pets for a while. One of them liked to chew wires. He chewed the lamp wires. After the shock, he stopped chewing on the wires. The rabbit was alive (he lived another 9 years). His whiskers were a bit singed and shorter. We did have to replace every lamp cord he got to.
Just wait until games reach fully interactive levels, a la holodecks.
Well, that would mean fewer fat gamers. Which would be a good thing. Although, a holodeck version of WOW would be scary and funny all at the same time.
what parent said: When I was 15 I figured out my first law of nature. Said law is, "People are generally stupid." In the 27 years since I first figured that out, I have seen no evidence to the contrary.
Smart cards alone are not the solution either. I have seen a few smart cards need a password in order to be used. I thought it was funny since the reason for the smart card was to not have a password.
So make an add in card with a CPU socket and RAM slots for use in this processing?
Hmm *looks up patent records for CPU RAM Add in cards for processing*
To be honest I thought this was the next step in high end computer setups. At least with the card with the socket and RAM slots, you could change the CPU and RAM to better suite your needs. I do not know to many people who change the GPU or memory on graphic cards. There is a trade off from having the socket vs having the CPU and memory fixed. Is it worth it?
AMD, Intel, microsoft, Apple, IBM and everyone else I wrote it first! So prior art. Probably IBM already has this idea patented anyway.
More likely the 3.5 inch floppies themselves have gone bad. Floppy disks go bad. Newer CDRs and DVDRs do not last too long. For some reason the CDRs i burned back in 1996, 1997 still work fine while the CDRs and DVDRs from last year are falling apart.
I would still say tape is the way to go. Also if you back something up and forget about it until you need it. You may be doing something wrong. As the medium changes shouldn't one also change the archives to the newer medium? I.E. Your long term backups are on LTO2 tapes. A LTO3 drive and tapes come in. You should restore your long term LTO2 data. Then back it up on LTO3 tapes. Then you archive the long term LTO3 data. LTO4 come in, do the process again. It is time consuming and seems like a waste of time and resources. You are keeping your data on 'current' back up mediums. Also you are moving to newer tapes which in theory should last longer then the older ones. Having to restore and then backup the archive data while not under the gun is a lot less stressful.

NT ran great on the alpha cpus. Back in the 1990s through 2000 I saw many NT alpha machines. The alpha machines were faster then the Intel machines of the same era. The alpha cpus were much slower then the Intel based ones, but NT ran faster.
We finally migrated off of alpha cpus when we rebuilt the database systems using fiber channel storage systems. That was 1999.
I am surprised that the Middle East has not started a massive desalination plants (or many of them). There are quite a few countries there who border on salt water. They could get the drinking water from the sea. Or has the seas around the Middle East become too polluted to filter and remove the salt?
Maybe they first move the building onto a platform and lift that platform?
I have seen them move lighthouses that are a few hundred years old. The concept is not too different. Instead of moving the structure on the ground the whole distance, they are moving it a short distance on the ground then switching to the air. Also new structures could be designed to be lifted from the top. I see this more as a way of moving new structures then moving existing structures. Don't forget that certain equipment has to be assembled on site then used. They could move the equipment this way to the site.
Remember it that how you say something can be more important then what is said. Someone from HR or the prior boss may say nothing negative at all. How they say it can infer negative things. I have seen and heard this often.
I built a PC with two hauppauge cards to record TV. Each card has an digital and analog tuner on it. I needed 4 cable connections. After hardware and software (SageTV or Beyond TV I got to go look They have been running fine for 4 years now) it has been fine. The longest part was scanning for TV channels. The HD channels took about an hour to scan. Considering I am not paying for any HD cable, getting 14 1080i channels was a bonus. I had to map the channel number to what channel it was for easy reference. For around $550 I have a good home 'VCR'. I have not watched TV live in years. Besides the power outages from storms, I have not had the systems go down. Having 2GB+ of storage is a nice.
This is in a mid size PC case. It is not small. It fits behind the TV cabinet just fine. The IR remote works fine from the couch. I did run a few long USB cables for a wired mouse and keyboard. Playing the occasional game on the TV is good. The cords run behind the wall molding. They are mostly out of sight.
I would say the PWN to Own contests prove you wrong. Linux and OSX are still smaller in numbers then windows. Since bot nets, malware, and the rest are going for profits not fame, hitting more machines with the same attack is better. If OSX or Linux, or (enter OS of choice here) was 60%+ of all computers you actually believe that there would not be malware, bot net programs, etc. written for it?
OSX will get hit really hard if it does take the numbers crown. Most of the OSX people I see will enter in their password at that prompt without a second thought. Most non computer people do that no matter the OS. That is what the malware writer is counting on. That people will not think and just press OK or enter in their password to allow the installation. Maybe there should be a computer use test or license. At least then people might have some idea that if they are looking up directions to some store and are prompted for their password to not enter in their password.
Too bad we are not closer to the prosthetic body idea from Ghost in the Shell. Even if in the experimental stages, this boy might sign up for the chance at a longer life.
People can be 'looking' at the road and still not be paying attention to their driving. Muscle memory does not make sense here. Unless that person drives for a living, most people do not have enough time behind the wheel for that to work. Most people's actual drive time is less then 30 minutes. It may be 2 hours due to traffic. But they are not going very fast in that traffic. Reaction times and driving habits are very different for bumper to bumper traffic and fast highway driving.
The people who drive a lot can do what you say. The rest cannot. Ask your self this question: have you ever driven to work and not remember getting there? You remember getting in the car where you live. Then getting out of the car at work. But nothing in between. I had a 55 mile commute to work for a while. I often had that happen to me. I would walk around the car looking to see if I hit anything. I remembered nothing about the drive to (or from) work. That bothered me enough to move closer to work sooner then I was ready for.
You know how to create more land where people need that land to be? I have not seen many cities that have large amounts of land available to build on.
Also the cost of homes/apartments near their work is often out of their affordability range. They have to live further away. Whether or not public transportation is available is another matter.
It is a dual core or an i5? We got a macbook pro it says an intel dual core T9600. It is not the latest macbook pro line. Or else when you install win 7 on it the CPU changes.
Anyway I have seen many i5 based laptops they are nice. Not as nice as the i7 based ones. For most regular people an i5 with 4GB (or more) of RAM in a laptop is just fine.
Not to burst you bubble too much but if you search say newegg for lga775 and DDR3 memory you get a bunch of choices. As for as USB3 and SATA3 I think you are right.

Sarah Palin may be a moron but she she never said that. That was an SNL skit.
Shadow warrior:
Wang: You wanna wash wang? Or watch Wang wash wang?
Girl in bath: You pervert! *pulls out guns and shoots Wang*
I sort of thought Shadow warrior and Duke were the same engine and written by the same people. Both games can be played for the humor aspect.
