They seem minor today but back then it was seen differently. Patents were explicit. Not vague. Hence why the large number of gun patents.

With computer and software patents I personally think the par needs to be raised as to what can be patentable. Developing a new CPU socket to allows for 1/10000 the amount of power without losing any performance, on the right track to a patent. Writing a brand new application that is the first to do a task, maybe. A patent for saving work before shutting down? No. I get prompted before I close the app now. A patent for a touch screen? Should have been tossed out prior art already. Touch screen are not new. They have been out for what 10+ years already.

The patent system needs to be overhauled. It was originally designed to allow a small inventor to not taken over or forced out of the market by a big company. Today, the big companies have so many patents that it is extremely hard for a new person or company to get going. Their product is bound to already be in some other companies patent war chest. These vaguely written patents should never have been allowed.

Also half in the ground and above ground (the above ground pools is sunk into the ground a bit) need a permit. You are also supposed to have a 4 foot (or higher) fence around the pool. If above ground pool you needed to have a ladder that could be raised. This was so that small children could not wander into the pool.

Basically, Long Island wants to tax you for having the pool. Which is what the permits are. You need a permit for a fence, or a permit for the in ground pool, or a permit for both. Either way you pay. Also in ground pools increase your property taxes while above ground did not.

I lived on Long Island for 16 years. Unless it was changed since I left (which is possible). That is how it was. many people put up an above ground pool to avoid the property taxes, but still got some taxes for the fence.

If you want to split the audio from the picture you can still do what everyone else does with a home theater system (or those of us with surround sound). You use the old RCA ended plugs or optical sound out from the TV/satellite box/cable box/blue ray/DVD/whatever device into the sound device. My old CRT TV has audio out. This thing is from 1996. Most TVs today have a way to send the sound to a separate device. The exact setup will be determined by what equipment you have.

As for PC's video look at the video card driver and how it is supposed to be setup. Nvidia uses a connection from the sound card (on board or card) to the video card to send the sound through the HDMI cable. ATI does it through software (according to what I have read). DVI does not have sound, only video. If you use a VI to HDMI cable (or adapter) you will only get picture and no sound. If you do have a separate system for sound this should not be an issue. Send the picture to the TV and the sound directly to your sound system. Isn't that what you are looking for in the first place?

Also the combining of functions to have fewer cables makes one's wife/girl friend happier. Fewer cables usually means less clutter.

I thought that display port was taking over from HDMI? I see many devices not just video cards with display port as an option.
