By now, hardware has gotten to the point where any performance difference will be pretty much unnoticeable. performance was the reasoning to put it in the kernel space in the difference, but now that it makes a negligable difference, they're favoring stability. Really, the main reason windows makes the best gaming OS is just because there are games availible for it.
Yes, but even if they fail, you have to pay legal expenses. In an ideal world, downloading stuff you already own should go off without a htich, but unfortunately, that is sometimes far from reality.
you can set limewire up to not share the folder it saves stuff in. I agree, sharing stuff is generally a bad idea, since they can try to get you on distributing the stuff, But would they have any kind of a case against you if you didn't share, and already owned the stuff you're downloading? seems to me that should be fine, but is it?
of course, if the cd doesn't have a ton of DRM on it, it's probably easier to rip it yourself. more reliable too, and you can specify whatever format you choose.
If MS won't stop using windows server for it's own purposes, especially since they need better performance more than anyone, what do you think the odds are that Gates uses a competitor's product for something so much more trivial?
but would they have made an open source version of aqua for the project? The idea of making it entirely open source wasn't based on RMS's, rantings, they just didn't want to be at the mercy of any corporation.
Besides that, I'm not denying that OSX is a decent OS, with a decent selection of apps, but are you actually buying into Intel's BS that linux doesn't have software? Pretty much all it's short on is an up to date version of flash player.
what the heck does a computer do? This is just a cheap computer. Surely I haven't encounterd a slashdotter who thinks computers are useless? so it's not very powerful. My pentium 2 laptop is still good for surfing the web and other simple tasks (or it would be if I could get the network card working.) This thing will be just as good at those tasks, which for educational purposes cannot be scoffed at. The sheer information that will suddenly become availible to these childern is astounding. This will be better than my old laptop though; it's lighter, runs cooler, and has a much more reliable power source than my crappy battery.
Why do they just have to have generic rating. These companies should be obligated to print exactly what kind of material is in the game and let parents decide.
sure, on the front it just says M, but on the back it does just what you're asking for. from the back of the Half-Life 2 box:
"MATURE 17+
Blood
Intense Violence"
But perhaps you would prefer it said "The player makes bloody corpses out of stalinist police and frightening monsters, some of which jump on people's faces, and gnaw at them until they're no longer recognizeable, and become bloody zombies under the control of these 'Head crabs'"
there's a point at which things get too descriptive. the current system is fine, people just need to look at the existing details.
I can hear the difference between cd and dvd audio, though granted, it's very subtle. and higher framerates in games above 30 seem subtly smoother. I have good vision and good hearing, plus an excelent sound system, but I'm not inhuman. the difference is there, but it's nothing I would pay extra for. the light example the grandparent gave perfectly illustrates his point.
no, DVDs don't quite fit. what they're reffering to would be players that refuse to play a home video of your kid's birthday, because it doesn't have DRM. Obviously, this would piss many people off, because of the problem they mention.
That would be hilarious. talk about a strain on tech support:
customer: how do I type captial letters?
tech support: push the caps lock key when you want to start typing in capital letters, and push it again to stop.
customer: why doesn't my computer just have a shift key?
tech support: it's a nessicary measure to prevent piracy.
customer: huh?
of course, this would be just another failed DRM scheme, since all you would need to do was hook up an external keyboard. I'd be more willing to do that than trust my dexterity to not block out music when applying tape/marker
unfortuneately not, if you're dealing with IGN, although I didn't get an ad first, but hey. anyway, here's the text of the article:
Jack Thompson's Alabama License Revoked
Controversial attorney thrown off of GTA lawsuit.
by Wade Steel
November 21, 2005 - Controversial Miami-based attorney Jack Thompson has been removed from a lawsuit filed by the families of two slain police officers and a police dispatcher against Sony, Rockstar Games, and game retailers. Furthermore, the judge in the case revoked Thompson's license to practice law in the state of Alabama citing Thompson's behavior as the cause of the sanction.
In our previous coverage of the trial, we reported that Thompson had voluntarily withdrawn from the case because he felt that the "other side [meaning the trial defendents] wants to make me the issue." However, Judge Moore, the case's presiding jurist, issued a stinging 18-page report in which the judge rejected Thompson's claim of voluntary removal and stated that Thompson was effectively thrown off the case for actions "before this Court [that] suggest that he is unable to conduct himself in a manner befitting practice in this state." Furthermore, Moore has referred Thompson's conduct to Disciplinary Commission of the Alabama Bar for "appropriate action." Such actions could potentially include complete permanent disbarrment from the practice of law in the state of Alabama.
The removal of Thompson from the case does not necessarily represent the end of the trial, as his long-time associate Ray Reiser will assume the role of lead counsel for the case's plaintiffs.
Not one to take such things lying down, Thompson fired back at Judge Moore by claiming the the judge "has violated... The Alabama Canons of Judicial Ethics by his unfortunate, improper, and prejudicial acts in this case, at the expense of three bereaved Alabama families."
We will continue to keep you informed on the status of this case as developments warrant.
That wasn't his question. His question was why switching office suites at all? They don't really need the latest version of office, considerning not that much has changed anyway. all it will do for them is make them retrain all of their employees for the new version, while affording no new fucntionality. as far as he (and I for that matter) knew, not doing anything would be free, whereas changing to open office, though there would be no purchase involved, would require a fair amount of work to get set up.
as people have mentioned, the licenscing works differently for businesses than individuals, so it wouldn't work to just stick with what they have. It was a ligitamate question. I actually learned something becauase of it, and I'm sure he did too. The reason it was modded flamebait was because the typical slashdot reader is so anti-MS/pro OSS, that the minute the two get involved, all logic goes out the window.
Okay, bad choice of words. Keep in mind though, people make that same arguemnt when they say copyright enfringement isn't stealing. Technically they're right, but it doesn't nessicarily equate to copyright infringement isn't wrong just because the term doesn't sound quite as strong. Of course, in reality, the punishment for copyright infringement is usually much worse than theft.
I'm going to stop ranting for now and just finish up with saying that I think my point is still valid; they were [insert equivalant legal language for "convicted" when dealing with a civil case], of something that typically means a company is no longer allowed to exist as is, and they bribed their way out of it.
Microsoft hired a group of developers from Digital Equipment Corporation led by Dave Cutler to build Windows NT, and many elements reflect earlier DEC experience with VMS and RSX-11.
I loath microsoft, and I think I'm justified in that. Most of it is because of their business practices. We can't ignore the fact that they are a convicted monopolist, especially after having gotten off with little more than a slap on the wrist. It also annoys me that they buy/copy more than they innovate. they bought DOS, and based their OS's off of that for a while, and they hired out another company to make NT for them. And the constant FUD is yet another perfectly legitamite reason to hate them. The fact this is front page news is proof of that. even in this case, they aren't being entirely truthful. from TFA: So why is this interesting? Because their test methods reflect Windows internals, not Unix kernel design. There are better, faster, ways of doing these things in Unix, but these guys - among the best and brightest programmers working at Microsoft- either didn't know or didn't care. if that's honesty, I'm not surprised nobody gives them any credit.
that said, I agree with you that they get even more shit than they deserve. Not all of their products are terrible. MS Office is actually significantly more efficient than OOo. they've done a very nice job with MSN messenger. I can't comment on Singularity, as I know next to nothing about it. I still think they're satan incarnate, but I'm willing to give credit where credit is due.
hell yes. halo was a mediocre shooter at best, and I don't do console shooters anyway because the control style is unbeliveably akward. (although the revolution might change that)
the cases are actually think thing that bothers me the most, forgetting about the prices. you can make something attractive without making it impractical. I'd like to be able to replace a hard drive myself if it fails. and sweet-looking PC cases run about the same prices as the bland ones, all else being equal.

Or just realize how stupid using IE is in the first place. Firefox's search bar is set to google by default.
I think you may be on to something:
As far as I know, in the five years it has been available as open source, not one contribution to the program has come from amateurs.
Only a sith deals in absolutes. (In all seriousness though, where does he get of with this rediculous assumption? Not many? Mabye. None? Ha!)
Excel is a spreadsheet program. Access is database. think you mixed that one up. Now, may I add my own corolarry?
Corollary: text editors are used mainly by people who don't understand word processors.
complexity isn't always an advantage; there are plenty of things spreedsheets do just fine, and a database program would be overkill for.
Besides that, I'm not denying that OSX is a decent OS, with a decent selection of apps, but are you actually buying into Intel's BS that linux doesn't have software? Pretty much all it's short on is an up to date version of flash player.

even, so, you could always just permanently disable autoplay via software.
no, DVDs don't quite fit. what they're reffering to would be players that refuse to play a home video of your kid's birthday, because it doesn't have DRM. Obviously, this would piss many people off, because of the problem they mention.

no, but it's just as helpful to those who would exploit it, which was what they had in mind. I'm sure apple got the whole set of info.

pure genius my friend.
hell yes. halo was a mediocre shooter at best, and I don't do console shooters anyway because the control style is unbeliveably akward. (although the revolution might change that)
Ok, bad example, but my point about upgradability in general is still valid.
I'm 18 and I got it. it's not as dated as you think.
