Holy cow, I clicked "reply to this" and I got a textarea I can type in!

Not sure if that's a joke, but I've had that for a year or more. Maybe because I chose to use the Beta interface in preferences, then forgot I'd done it.

He also has more money than pretty much anyone else in the world. It's good he's doing those things, but he is very much a businessman, one who created and ran a company using anti-competitive practices and locking people into some really shitty software. I approve of any charity work he does, but I still think he's a douche. And when are that mega-rich, it's easy to give even billions to charity and not feel that your wallet is any lighter.

I still stand by what I said. If I wanted to be extremely cynical, I could say that Bill Gates needs all the positive publicity, not to mention customers, that he can get.. though I'd hope that he feels rich enough by now and doesn't feel the need to save third world countries just so that he can suck money out of them.

Possibly. Many people are too stupid to even find Facebook though, so if all the games moved they might be unable to find them. There was a hilarious incident a couple of years ago where the number 1 Google result for "Facebook" was a news article about Facebook. The comments were littered with thousands of comments saying stuff like "the new Facebook login screen sucks, bring back the old one!".

A fork in this case is a wonderful solution to a death by stagnation caused by proprietary idiocy from Oracle.

Exactly. If the source was closed, we'd maybe have to find a whole new Office suite, but this way we can just fork Oracle and move on.

Imagine if you could design a computer where you didn't have to worry about losing power for a short period of time because once the power returned, the entire contents of RAM would still be there and you could just resume where it left off.

I have one of those at work, I call it a laptop (well, a netbook). We had a power cut for a while last week, some of the UPSes ran out, but my netbook was fine :)

And it would mean you didn't have to ensure that your laptop was suspended before battery runs out, and you don't lose what you were working on in case the battery does run out while suspended.

Use hibernate instead of suspend. Admittedly hibernation has been pretty buggy on some of the OS/laptop combinations I've had over the years.

I do think this stuff would be very cool for power savings when the machine is in use though.

I understand these games would not have had the success they are enjoying without Facebook

I think that is the key point. Facebook needs to be able to turn a decent profit to survive, and they are the ones providing the users for these games. If the developers don't like the 30% policy, they're free to go elsewhere.. and have no players.

I'm addicted to Facebook without playing the games. You could say I'm addicted despite the games and apps. The last time I clicked on an app, it seemed to be malware, constantly reloading, presumably posting lots of crap on my friends' walls or something. I'm happy with just the ability to send messages/organise events, share links and photos.

I honestly can't think of any time I have thought 'I wish I had faster broadband'. In fact, I could upgrade to fibre for not much extra but I don't feel the need.

My flatmate upgraded us to a 16Mb-down/8Mb-up line and still talks of improving the speed. I don't see the point right now. He says stuff like "but what if you're streaming a movie and I'm playing Warcraft while also downloading shows on iTunes" type of thing, but I'm happy with our current speeds for my own usage.

I can imagine future MMOs and better quality video streaming would be good uses of fast connections, but right now I think a lot of people will feel the same as us, that online services still need to catch up to the capabilities of our connection speeds before there's any point in upgrading further. I'm happy for early adopters to keep driving connection speeds up, and pay a premium for it, but right now I'm happy with a connection that's fast enough to stream an HD movie or two.

As for him not being sad, it's good if he's not, though he certainly seems quite introspective and thoughtful, and there has been some heavy stuff in his life that would make anyone sad every now and then. Growing up without a dad, best friend dying, baby dying.. a lot of people have to deal with one or two of those things, but not many have to deal with it all. Considering how private he is, I don't think he's likely to talk about such things on a 2 bit news program.
