I don't care who "wins". Chances are they may agree with me on one or two issues, but overall the representation you are likely to get out of the current system is abysmal, especially when only limited to two real choices. In this day and age we should be able to have much more of a say on individual issues though, rather than saying "I like this guy, he can run the country for a while!".
No, I'm talking about online polling. No doubt the slashdot crowd wouldn't like the idea of everyone having their own unique, trackable account, but it would be a hell of a lot cheaper and simpler than physical voting, whether paper or electronic.
You could easily write a short script to do that if you wanted.. can't take much to copy the contents of the disc and mount it in a virtual drive if you have the appropriate utilities installed.
We need to ask why that is. Is it because nobody is contacting their representative to say "hang on a minute here..."? Or is it because the arguments we put forward are viewed as being so pathetically weak that they may as well be ignored? Bear in mind that copyright holders are using economics arguments, which are always going to be perceived as being much stronger than "I don't like this law because I don't think it's very nice" arguments.
Or is it because we the public aren't really able to provide any serious kickbacks compared to big business? Well actually we do pay a lot already in taxes, but we don't really get any say in where our money goes. I never vote in general elections - IMO it's almost entirely pointless - but I would certainly vote on individual issues if given the chance.
I understand that a lot of people out there are dumb fucks and that if the complete running of the country was left to public opinion then it could screw things up a lot, but I would like to be able to vote in a more finely grained manner on several topics. Writing damn letters to people all the time whining about everything I don't like doesn't sound like a very good use of my time either, I'd be sat there for the rest of my life just writing and complaining. And my letters would probably go unnoticed in the piles of other letters from other people complaining about asinine things. IMO we need national online polling systems. No more stupid, inefficient, buggy, paper ballots. I'm sure it'll happen eventually, maybe not in my lifetime though..
One other key features of modern Exchange is mobile "DirectPUSH" - you'd need a replacement for that too. Then again I suppose everyone could just use free webmail accounts (or *spit* Blackberrys), but that doesn't seem very private or professional.
The Mini 10 actually gets 10 hours of battery life too btw, though it will be heavier. And a 32GB SSD iPad here in the UK is actually 66% more expensive than my 32GB SSD Mini 9 was a year ago (they're no longer available now anyway). The screen is bigger, but for taking proper notes I don't see how the iPad onscreen keyboard could compare. If you simply recorded the lecture instead then that's not so bad (I'm just presuming the iPad can do recordings here, and there must be apps that can actually attempt to transcribe voice too?).
Except run Microsoft Office reliably. Or Photoshop. Or plug your iPod in and have it "just work." I know you can do *equivalent* things, but most of the world doesn't know "word processing software," they know "Microsoft Word." Wishing it weren't so won't change a damn thing.
Uh.. the original question was "Where can I get a work-alike iPad clone that costs me only 33.3%-50% the price of a real iPad?", not "where can I get something that does exactly the same as a Windows PC?".
You can't get Office or Photoshop on an iPad, and even if you could they would suck without a decent keyboard for Office, or a stylus for Photoshop.
I don't care what people are used to. If you want to talk alternatives to things, of course you have to get used to some different software. That's the whole friggin point. If people can get used to Word, they can get used to an alternative Office Suite. I've always just used what's available. I have told a few people about OpenOffice and some of them actually prefer it to Word. Some don't. The wonderful thing about humans is that we all are different, it makes life interesting.
My Dell Mini 9 is apparently 2.3lbs, though the fact that the screen keeps itself upright means I don't have to concern myself with supporting the weight, or craning my neck. The keyboard and touchpad also make input a breeze. The keyboard is fairly small but I can touch type on it fine. Hell, even my phone's teeny tiny keyboard is much nicer to use than the iPad when entering and editing text (seeing as it actually has arrow keys and I can shift-select text etc).
The lack of keyboard has always been the main thing stopping me from getting an iPhone. Even Windows fscking mobile is preferable to using an iPhone simply because I can use devices with decent keyboards. My next phone will probably be Android based but I don't care enough to switch at the moment. I may get an iPad or iPod Touch (primary thinking behind this is that my car stereo works far better with iPods than with any other USB storage device), but I'd have to buy a keyboard (and maybe a stand) for it to want to use it regularly. And that brings the weight right back up again. And the cost.
I think power requirements are probably the main problem, rather than the hardware. It must be pretty trivial to add more cores to a system that's already using tens of thousands of them, but you're going to need a lot of power.
These systems are only really getting "faster" for parallel tasks too - if you gave them a sequential workload then I assume they would fare worse than a high end gaming machine!
Thankyou! I am guessing the guys who modded me "troll" are also of the lazy type who would prefer their problems to magically go away without them putting any effort into it!
I have just read it, while he did create another account to let his group know what was going on. It really doesn't sound like he tried very hard to get in touch with Google for proper support, he just waited three years for an answer to fall into his lap.
He at one point complains that all the support pages linked into Groups so he couldn't access them, but he clearly could after creating his second account. The guy just sounds a bit lazy, the way he whines at the idea of moving to a different hosting/forum provider etc
I don't think that's a very good analogy.. a better one would be the brain making your heartbeat or breathing slightly irregular rather than stopping completely. And some people's brains do that. Cardiac dysrhythmia can be fatal, but for some people it's just an annoyance.
Fuck the Holy Spirit! And fuck Santa Claus! And the FSM! Fuck them all! There, now I can be sure of going to at least 3 different types of hell, if they exist. Oh, and everyone who reads this is also going to hell, because my god said they were faithless bastards. He's a bit shy though and only talks to me, so I'm the only human ever to actually be going to heaven. Sorry guys!
Text messages are about 10p for 140 characters (or whatever), data rates are cheaper than that even on mobile phones. If you have a contract and are really that much of a phone junky, then you may have "unlimited" texts or data anyway though.

Interesting. I thought updates were only meant to be required for non-playback features. Lame.

And how is that a specific problem of blu-ray above DVD or any other digital distribution format?

It's an explosive combination.

Sounds to me like the problem solves itself!
Linux based netbooks can do all the same stuff* (and much more) for literally half the price, even with a similar sized SSD. Jus' sayin.
* apart from the Wii-mote style antics, but honestly, who actually cares? Tilting your whole screen around while playing a game is an awful concept.
I'm turning my face into a caricature of the Prophet.

There are skeptics and there are "skeptics"
This is BS!

Why not create another account to let your users know what's going on, and to contact Google support staff?

Meh.. I'm pretty happy to have my brain, even if it makes some mistakes sometimes.
