Yep fair enough - I appreciate that a lot of people are just in it for the games. I originally got the PS3 mainly for games too, but have since realised it has so much more to offer, it's changed the way I look at home entertainment entirely:)
The Wii does have its own merits and would be capable of almost as much as the PS3 and Xbox if Nintendo made appropriate "channels" and peripherals, but I expect they'll probably leave that kind of stuff for the next generation. I think things like the Weather channel, Internet channel, Pictures channel, Everybody Votes etc show that Nintendo are going to be expanding their horizons to do more than just gaming though, there hopefully will be decent media capabilities in the Piss or whatever they decide to call their next console (I'm actually amazed at how Wii doesn't sound stupid or make me giggle anymore as a name for a console).
Nintendo could also release software for the Wii to do everything the 360 and PS3 do (althought not in HD obviously), but the point is that so far, they haven't.. just because Microsoft or Nintendo 'could' do something doesn't mean they will..
It's true, if the enemies in FPSes are any good and you only have the same health as them then it makes it pretty difficult, but it also creates a lot of atmosphere and sense of reward when you do actually manage to win. I much prefer when the main character has all the same limitations as the enemies. Back when I was playing CS a lot I'd sometimes be able to take out the whole enemy team by myself anyway, sometimes changing the tide of the game by switching sides.. given the right type of game, making the enemies properly smart can make things so much more fun. A good compromise for those who want an easier life would be to make the enemies smarter tactically, but keep their aim fairly poor, then you get to feel like James Bond or Han Solo with a million enemies shooting at you and every shot missing:P
Bah. It depresses me how bad the AI still is in FPS games after I made my own bots for CS years ago (when I didn't have a decent internet connection - when I got broadband I stopped making the bots). My bots had different personalities, can't remember if you specifically had to specify rusher/camper/whatever or if it was just a certain courage level, but you could specify obedience level (for responding to radio commands), weapon preferences, ability to use grenades, aiming skill (higher skill levels would use more controllerd fire and be more likely to HS you on the first shot, while lower ones would start at about chest level then just spray and pray), whether they were able to look sideways to check for enemies down side alleys as they were running along a path etc, all per bot so you could create awesome bots (modelled on myself and my friends:P), and noobs, etc. In the last incarnation they were starting to pick up knowledge of stuff like where they had killed enemies or died themselves which affected their 'courage' and how likely they were to start sneaking around or rushing (made a big difference because you can't hear walking enemies in CS and the bots respected that). Those were the days.. AI is fun, at least for games like Counter-Strike.. it's not quite so much fun for stuff like board games..
If anyone still has CS 1.5 and wants to try them out they're called TEAMbot and one of the last releases is still up at http://www.planethalflife.com/teambot . I probably still have the latest version of the source on one of my old HDs..
Halo sounded excellent to me when it was Mac only, but when MS got their grubby mitts on it I soon lost interest.. not to mention that's around the time I got my first Windows machine (my dad pointed out if I was going to be a developer I might as well develop for the most commonly used OS despite the fact I hated Windows) so I had Half-Life and Counter-Strike to keep me happy.
I like the Wii I find it much more fun when other people are playing as it is more of a multiplayer system.
Get LittleBigPlanet if you haven't got it (and if you do have it, just ignore the rest of this comment!) - it's honestly much more fun than I ever had on my Wii:) It's probably even worth buying 3 extra controllers if you have lots of friends round regularly. Definitely worth buying at least one extra controller anyway, and maybe your friends will have spare controllers. My best friend has 2 as well so we just share when we have LBP nights.
Whenever I've tried to explain LittleBigPlanet to someone they haven't really got it. But once they start playing, much hilarity always ensues, even if they're not geeky types who go 'oooh' at the physics engine like I do:)
The anti-MS sentiment on/. has nothing to do with Xboxes. If anything MS are more popular here because of the X-Box. My own anti-MS sentiment at least comes from their shoddy and uninspiring Operating Systems, and it started about a decade before I ever discovered slashdot..
I bought a Wii and then a PS3. The Wii soon got relegated to the corner, and after a while I just gave it to one of my sisters so it would actually get some use. The PS3 isn't that expensive for what it is. I use mine as a DVD/blu-ray player, freeview PVR, I stream music and video to it from my computer to watch on my HDTV - oh, and I play the occasional game from time to time. I never even have to change the channel on the TV:)
As for cost, I'd go so far as to say the PS3 has probably paid for itself since I got PlayTV, with the amount of TV series and movies that I otherwise would have had to buy to watch (because they're on at inconvenient times). I used to buy a lot of DVDs. I've noticed my savings growing rapidly since getting PlayTV, while everyone else is busy whining and scaremongering about the economy..
So, I bought both a Wii and a PS3 and prefer the PS3. I'm not trying to "feel better about my purchase" when I say they're in different leagues. The Wii is basically 'just' a games machine; the PS3 and 360 do so much more, and IMO are signs of what to expect in the future. I'm looking forward to the next generation of consoles when everyone hopefully takes the best ideas from the Wii's control system and the PS3/Xbox's media and networking features and builds on them.
Maybe there aren't many on the road in the US, but there's plenty of diesels and smaller capacity petrol engines over here (the UK). And that's not just the taxis and delivery vans.
You should learn about the world outside America sometime, then you'll see that some cultures do actually have sense. Perhaps then you won't try to insult other people just because your perceptions are skewed by your own culture's failings..
There also seems to be a lot of trolls trolling other trolls
You know I never even considered that might happen before - serves them right! Though unfortunately if they haven't been making any products then they probably can't/won't get sued for much? Still, better that they fight amongst themselves than bother those who are actually making stuff and doing proper R&D.
He's saying it isn't an option if you want to keep option 2. Though my ancient 6MP Sony-W1 with its Zeiss lens seemed to get nice enough pictures.. printed out okay to A4 so 12MP is probably good enough for A3 printing.
Plus, has nobody else noticed that "Lack of Documentation == dangerous" is a complete waste of code unless it is combined with some program control statement? A single equals would be desirable if we're talking c style languages.
perhaps brilliant people are angry because life sucks.
You poor fools who die boring, polite and pointless never realized the tragedy of it all.
Funny how what you think of as the boring and polite people don't actually think life sucks, eh? I get frustrated at the attitude of some sheeple too, but there is something to be said for being happy.
Sometimes these people are not actually boring either, just respectful. Speak to them in an informal situation and they might not be as boring as you had previously thought. You don't have to be a jerk to have fun.
Those decisions still are not made solely on price though, unless you're a complete idiot. Any smart person won't just go for the overall cheapest option - they will find all the options that match their criteria and then will probably take the cheapest option from there. People won't adopt Linux simply because it's free, they will adopt it if it works for them - the fact that it's free is simply a bonus.
To take your examples to extremes you could say "let's stow away in this sewage tank being hauled to our destination because it's free!", or choose a builder that you know is going to use sub-par materials that will fall apart in a year's time. Nobody would do those things unless they had no money to spend in the first place, in which case they should probably be concentrating on saving some up instead of going off on a trip or redecorating..
I knew you weren't being serious, as your first statement is a joke. I just didn't realise you were joking about joking:P I wasn't trying to be malicious, I sometimes am a victim of my own subtlety or deadpan humour when people think I'm being serious:)
How very meta. I'll assume you were just pretending to be stupid then, but it seemed like you were trying to make an infinite loop joke where there was none to be made.
Soon they'll be hiring other people to make war for them. Though they possibly are already doing that too. Just goes to show that they're getting far too much funding..

Every time I turn around I see another "flying car" that just can't get off the ground financially or technically.
That would make a great line in a song, sung in a monotone

Adamo. Because we heard geeks really dig Battlestar Galactico.

chimp on a segway you say? Awesome :O http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pFv8CAniYQ
That would be 'didna'. Dinna means don't. In fact let me fix that for you, Glaswegian style:
I didna baw when ma da was chibbed fur nickin a pig, but am bawlin now :(
Getting chibbed is of course being stabbed with a sharp implement, but it works better since we haven't hung anyone in Scotland for quite some time.

*whoosh*
1) Author can document it or 2) it can document itself. Easy enough.
What you are probably missing is that companies tend to be composed of and led by people.. at least all the ones I know of.
Soon they'll be hiring other people to make war for them. Though they possibly are already doing that too. Just goes to show that they're getting far too much funding..
"Repeat after me" is a command and I interpret it as quite patronising and even aggressive.
