It really depends. For OSes, people don't care about benchmarks and stuff (though thankfully Vista seems to be being rejected - I really hope it doesn't manage to scrape through to mainstream adoption). But for specific high performance apps, people really do care about the speed and interface, and if one application was twice as fast as the rest, with the same features, reliability and ease of use, the others would basically have to follow suit - admittedly only as long as the faster app was marketed well enough that people knew about it and tried it out.

Almost switched off me Mac right there until I saw the GNAA title and realised it was just some malicious window positioning javascript. An Apple-Q later and everything was happy again..

So while we revel in the curios of the past, we ourselves have none to give to future generations. I'd say we're more likely to get stuff like this in the future, rather than less likely.. old backup tapes.. possibly stuff the developers took home to show their friends/family (well, maybe that's strictly forbidden or something, it certainly would be with DNF :P ). But I doubt developers just wipe old projects as soon as they start a new one. They probably keep backups of all their code on a network fileserver, that's what any sane person/company would do.

Thanks to the internets, it's easy to find stuff like this online too - I wrote a game when I was 12/13 and sent it into Amiga Format. A couple of years ago in a fit of nostalgia I tried searching for it online, found a website mentioning the name, got in contact with the author, and he sent me a copy (I dont have an Amiga any more and if I still have the floppies for the game they're at least 10 years old and probably corrupt, although the version that I sent into Amiga Format wasn't my final version, so there are little touches that are missing :( ). I can now play my game on an emulator. Kinda cool.

Usually if a project is canceled, it's because it was no fun to play anyway, so don't feel like you're missing out or anything! Some companies just release their boring games anyway.. others, like Valve or 3D Realms, only release games that they know are worthy.

I wasn't saying that the standard had to come first, but I didn't see how one could be 'invalid' per se. Others have helpfully pointed out that the standard could have paradoxical or otherwise impossible requirements though, which I s'pose makes sense. I didn't consider that at all, but in a sufficiently complex standard with different parts defined by different people, I guess it could happen pretty easily..

For example Another common use of the word cult is in film: for example the Blues Brothers is known as a 'cult classic', though it has nothing whatsoever to do with cults. Personally I think there's a lot of humour to be found in stereotypes, as long as it is the ironic kind and not just vicious racism and the like. I don't mind people making jokes about my ethnicity (Scottish), the fact that I am not a morning person, blah blah blah.

There have been people at my work who do seem genuinely bigoted and in those cases, your talk of avoiding confrontation and such is valid, but the GP doesn't sound like a bigot. And as an aside, how on earth do you think that weight is 'beyond the control' of the subject (unless they perhaps aren't physically well enough to do exercise). If you get regular exercise and don't eat junk then it's going to be pretty difficult for your body to pile on the pounds.
