You mean you can't tell the time from the position of the sun in the sky? Pfft.. kids these days relying on their fancy technology...

I kinda want a GPS just for the geek factor, but the fact is that road signs tend to be enough for me in intercity travel, and if I don't know the local area of the place I'm going to then I google(maps) it. Even when travelling around cities I know, I like to take random roads I've never taken before to find shortcuts. After playing computer games like GTA3 (which has a mini-map with an arrow telling you which direction to take, but not a GPS telling you exactly which road to take) and Test Drive Unlimited (which has a GPS feature which highlights the best roads), then I can confirm that I don't bother trying to remember the roads at all when using the GPS..

These devices all have their uses, but either they need to integrate all the knowledge that we personally get from roadsigns, and have it updated immediately (if there are accidents, etc), or people need to keep their wits about them too and make sure that they only use the GPS as a mobility aid rather than their primary source of information. In fact an AI system that drives itself and recognises road signs and road markings would probably be able to do better than some of the numpties that you hear about these days.. we already have self driving cars and good-enough optical recognition technologies, it's just that the potential lawsuits involved if someone gets run over by a robot car could get rather complicated/expensive.

While I like Linux and can use a command line fine, I don't really see how the graphical control panel is a negative point in Windows (or Mac OS for that matter, which also has a good command line, being based on BSD and all..). A lot of the configuration options in Windows are hidden away in the registry rather than in plain text files. Yes, I prefer having easily accessible configuration files, but the fact is that Windows was designed to be used mainly through a graphical environment, while Linux is more flexible and is designed to be usable even without X server.

These days people are just letting things pass by though.. I'm not American and I didn't study history so maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't think there have been any major protests in America in the last few decades? Not even over fuel prices (which is one of the major things that the French did recently, blockaded the port at Calais until the government dropped their new fuel tax). These days I'd bet the government would take a pretty heavy handed approach to any angry mob getting anywhere near the White House..

I'm talking about matters with their government. A spontaneous angry mob can work in protest against a government, but not really against an entire army that means to wipe them out rather than just pacify them..

I did bring that up by myself, though 128 is the 'standard' rate that songs seem to be provided at online (though the new radiohead album was something like 160kbps so I haven't actually ripped the physical copy yet). Yes, I said that 192kbps is fine.

  10. Re:NEWSFLASH! MP3's suck. Use a lossless CODEC. on The Death of High Fidelity · · Score: 3, Interesting

OK I'm not even an audiophile and I can tell the difference between my 128 and 192kbit MP3 rips.. the hihat definitely sounds better in the 192kbps version, which makes sense as say MP3 gets a lot of its compression by cutting out bass/treble first (hihat being very treble-y :P ). Maybe that's more because I'm a drummer than an audiophile, but I definitely prefer the 192kbps rips. The 128kbps really do sound 'flatter' for a lot of songs (some simpler rocky or poppy songs sound fine at 128kbps imo, I guess because most of them dont involve any subtlety, they're all about making a big first impression). If there was no difference then we'd have no need for different file formats. There's a difference between being able to hear low volume and having pitch perfection and that kind of thing. You can have the most expensive instrument in the world and not know how to play it ;) And yeah I still dont consider myself an audiophile, but I dont agree with you (you haven't even linked to the results of your tests).

That's very similar specs to the machine I have lying in my room in need of a new PSU. Apart from the fact that it isn't dual core, that machine is getting close to the limits of processor speed these days. I know you're just trolling, but for the last few years all non budget processors have been 'good enough' for desktop use. For gaming you just need to buy a better graphics card (okay, faster/multicore processors help with gaming too, but a 3200+ is nothing to sneeze at..)
