No, I dont see the point since you are retaining your launch capability. I wasn't saying that countries shouldn't be fully autonomous, but I also dont see the point in this case of keeping these shuttles as a stopgap measure, when an alternative is already available until NASA has their new fleet sorted out.

Meh, it works for Switzerland. I think when it comes to defense it's fine to develop your technology, but keeping a bunch of decrepit shuttles just for the sake of not being all chummy with Russia is sad. Very very sad :( One of these kids is not like the other, lalalalalalala...

Maybe if they didnt act like such jerks then you wouldnt need all that damn 'rocketry'. In this case there is no point at all to keeping the american rockets apart from stupid national pride. It's not even like you're depending on them forever, you're just cooperating with the russians until you have developed the next stage of your program. Why can't you learn to play nice - never watched Sesame Street? Or do they promote kicking your neighbour rather than sharing on Sesame Street these days? I'm a bit out of touch.

Evolution's fix: make them hurt like hell when struck so you learn not to mess with them. A Microsoft-style hack. Either that or it shows that God has a sense of humour? Or is just giving a convenient way for girls to protect themselves in situations where they are usually at a gross disadvantage because the man is already stronger.. you can go at it with a bunch of supercomputers if you'd rather have to beat someone senseless with a heavy implement (or perhaps just shoot them?) rather than just kick them in the nuts and run away.

Yep, that level of optimisation is getting a little silly (especially when it can be done rather easily by the compiler anyway) for most applications, but in general we just don't even need to think about memory requirements or efficiency these days for most apps. It's nice to be able to do that, but for example it would be nice if the lovely chaps down at Microsoft tried to minimise the amount of resources their flippin OS takes up and leave more for the actual 'important' bits - the applications. Oops that almost turned into an MS rant..

Okay, remove the US from that, it's still a good idea for the UK ;) lots of people are just going over to France to pick one up (and it's actually cheaper than the UK version, though obviously you have to pay for your travel)

I've always thought that, didn't realise there was a law for it. People used to optimise everything way back when, but now I suspect that most people just let the faster processor take care of things rather than trying to squeeze every nanosecond of performance out of their apps :( At least graphics are still getting faster just because they're adding more parallel processors to the chips..
