I understand your resentment of all the hype - there's far too much of it. But I have heard people talk of the "70's global cooling scare" before as a way of talking down global warming. I was born in '59 and I was a nerdy kid from a family that cared about such things. The level of conviction in the scientific community is a little stronger than it was then.
Of course, there's always the possibility we were heading for another ice age (we are a bit overdue) but the global warming nipped it in the bud. There's a little evidence (not lots) that points to this.
Hype? Yes
Total Bullshit? No.
Unfortunately the only way the media can deal with anything these days is by hyping it. "Our headlines have to be bigger than theirs"
Well, you are right about the spelling (oops - it was late what can I say)
But I thought he was a Lithuanian who explored around there. Ahh the wonders of wikipedia...
It was named by Strzelecki in honor of Kosciuszko. S. was Polish and K was a Polish-Lithuanian. I was told by a Litho mate of mine that Kosciuszko is a Lithuanian name.

yeah it was in the mountains, but the point is that here in australia we have tiny mountains, hell, our biggest mainland mountain (mt kosiusko) has a path to the top.
There are none that have snow the year round. And none that get any snow in summer. Until now.
Fitness is measured by reproduductive success. Do nobel laureates have huge families? Supermodels? No, in evolutionary terms these people are less fit than the stereotypical unemployed people with 6 kids and car bodies in the front yard.
Whatever genetics there are (if it is indeed genetic) to pre-dispose people towards successfull careers is being selected against (on average). If there are genes for collecting the dole and having lots of kids (or marrying multiple times and having 2 kids with each marriage) then these genes going to succeed.
I really hope this article is the result of paraphrasing by the journalist and not an accurate representation of Dr Curry's beliefs

Too right. Soft leading edge - yeah.
BTW there are quite a few animals (placentals, marsupials, lizards) alive today that look a lot like drawing 'a'. So why go for the freaky, stupid idea? Publicity perhaps.
Oh yes, and the pterosaurs (with membranes on the fore-limb) evolved from these things with membranes on the hind limb.
Did these bright guys come up with an explanation of how you manage to run around (or climb) while you are gradually evolving flight at your rear? Lots of animals can walk on their hind legs for a short distance or grip a branch with them while reaching for another branch with the front. Not many (ie none) do it the other way around.

Yeah, I'm sure there's plenty of stuff out there (note the quotes around 'unrippable'). My mates were full of suggestions. The point is it's _my_ cd which I paid for. I shouldn't have to go looking for software to rip it, and then look for more software again when they change their encryption / locking etc... I spend far too much time on the net as it is. They aren't stopping people who want to pirate (as your post proves) but they are discouraging me from purchasing their corrupted media
In the old days I'd buy records and copy them to tape - only play the record once. Later I'd buy the cd's and rip 'em to mp3's. Until I bought a few 'unrippable' cd's. I can't be bothered searching for notices, stickers etc... got burnt to many times. Now I just obtain unrestricted mp3's wherever I can eg AllofMp3.com. They say the return royalties to the artist, and that's good enough for me. I'm sure the RIAA etc.. are more than willing to sue if they think they have a case:-)
I'll buy from the labels when they make media that's usefull to me.
yeah, I agree, kind of like all those pedigree dogs like spaniels, which have a lot of ear an eye problems, pugs with a high propensity to respiratory problems, corgis with deformed/weak ankles etc....
If dog breeders (or the RSPCA) don't care about breeding in defects in dogs, why should scientists care any more about lab mice, which are at least being maimed for reasearch, not because they look cute with those droopy eyes etc...
Re the compatibility: yeah, both MSword and OOo mess up formatting at times. However, I have been using stylesheets since Word 3 (the DOS version). Using style sheets religiously seems to limit the frequency that OOo misinterprets.docs.
Also I don't think I have ever had OOo make mistakes using the.odts. Just for reference, the last document I worked on was 118 pages of TOC, index, screenshots etc...
Nice link between ID and the anti-global-warmers. They probably are the same people anyway.
(now if only I can delete the parent I can say I thought it up)
